Seasons Greetings from The Hazlewoods

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Greetings to you in the precious nameof Jesus Christ, our blessed Savior andRedeemer. May His love be with youthroughout this New Year as you seek tolive for Him.

We had a wonderful Christmas this

year, thanks to many of you. The boxesof goodies you sent were really appreciated, especially at this time of year when ourthoughts are turned toward home morethan any other time of the year. It's encouraging to know that you rememberedand are still thinking of us and prayingfor us and the work we are doing for theLord here.

Many of you are probably wonderingwhy you haven't received a newsletterin the past few months. Well, it's not because you were dropped from our mailinglist, but because we haven't put one outsince the September issue. I hope you willforgive us. We will try to do better in thefuture. In fact, we have decided to putthe newsletter out every 6 weeks insteadof monthly because we have a couple ofdays vacation every 6 weeks of school.

As we look back over this past year, aquestion conies to our mind, "Has it beenworth it?" We are not yet able to speakthe language very well and our teachingin our Bible class is still in English. Nottoo long ago I asked my students towrite in 100 words or less on one of two

themes: "Why I believe in God" or "WhyI do NOT believe in God". I would like to

share with you what 3 of these studentswrote.

The first student is a boy with whomwe first came in contact at summer camp.

(All of the themes are just as they wrotethem in their broken Engish.)

"It was the first time that I received a

Bible at the Fu-Long summer camp on

June 5. Before this time I haven't read

the Bible and so I didn't know what the

Bible talked about. But during the 5 dayssummer camp I have learned many, many

things from the Bible. I have learnedmany stories about God. From the film Ihave learned the history of the Bible from

the time of Adam and Eve to this day.And singing the holy songs is one thing

that made me feel happy. The songs suchas 'I'm So Happy', 'Love, Love, Love',are songs that I like best.

But 5 days passed so quickly. It is too

short a time for us to learn the Bible.

Though 1 have learned many things inthis 5 days, but there is more things thatI don't know. So after the summer campI came to the Bible class because I want

to know more things about Jesus Christ

and to understand the gospel of God."This boy has been very faithful to our

class ever since we returned from sum

mer camp and has brought others with

him.

The second student is a boy who hasbeen coming to our class since it first

started in December of 1969.

"Why I don't believe in God. From his

tory I know that God played a very important role in ancient society. But I think

'God' is only an abstract concept. We cannot see it. We cannot drive it by logic, just as we study history. History goes onsome rules such as, 'The power is thetruth', etc., there is no miracle in it.

Hence, it is easy for me to receive it.But in the Bible, there are many, manymiracles, such as Jesus can feed 5,000

people, only use few breads and fishesor Jesus raise from death after three days.

But from the viewpoint of biology we havestudied, they all impossibe. They all be-yound the ability of we human beings, and so, the concept is difficult for me to

receive.

Al! said here is niy opinion. It is basedon my knowledge. Maybe it is ridiculous.1 hope that after study more about theBible, I could see the real truth." Thisboy is a college student and is a biologymajor. The colleges here also teach evolution and so we are up against the sameproblem we had when we worked withyoung people in the States. Please prayfor this young man. He wants to believe.

The third aiid final student is a Christian girl who has been coming to our classabout 6 months. It is testimonies like thisthat make us want to roll up our shirtsleeves a little higher and begin workingeven harder. Listen to what she has to

say.

"Why I Believe in God? Sometimes Iask myself. But 1 don't know by myselfhow to answer. Just one thing I know,'In this world except God. nobody loveme.' This is the reason why I believe God.I don't want to write too many thingsabout 'Why I believe God'. As you knowread the Bible first please. You will knowthe other reasons."

And, you see. that's what it's allabout. Love. "Fod God so loved the world

that He gave His only begotten Son, thatwhosoever believeth in Him should not

perish, but have everlasting life." Againthe question comes to my mind, "Has itbeen worth it?" What do you think?

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Greetings to you in the name of theOne we love so much, Jesus Christ. Maywe seek to love as He does.

We have just passed through what isperhaps the happiest time of the year forthe Chinese — Chinese (or lunar) New

Year. This is their Christmas, Easter,Thanksgiving and Memorial Day allwrapped up in one (or I should say 15days). It is during this period of time thatthey give gifts, especially to children inthe form of money, pay homage (andsometimes worship) to their ancestors, and eat better than they do all year. Thisis probably the only time of the year thatthe whole family gets together, thoughscattered throughout the island the restof the year. Many families may just barely exist during the year, but will manageto save enough money to eat like kingsduring this time.

We have just made a change in ourEnglish Bible Classes. We are changingour Bible class to Sunday where we justteach the Bible and nothing else. Then onFriday night I teach two English classesto help recruit students for the Bible classon Sunday night. I am hoping to have bet-ter success with our teaching in this way.I have been told by other missionaries thatteaching EngUsh and Bible together isnot the best way to do it. As soon as theEnglish is discontinued, then everyone(including those who have become Christians) will never be seen again. Since weare so new, yet, I am not sure just whichis best, so we are going to try this for awhile. We are hoping by doing this, thaton Sunday night we will just get thosestudents who are interested in the Bible

and learning about God. We are encouraged right now. After doing this for abouta month, we have averaged eight students

on Sunday night. We average 15-20 students altogether in the two classes onFriday nights.

Only time will tell. Please continue yourprayers for these students. Several are atdifferent places of decisions. You can helpby praying, and even by writing a letterto one of them telling them of your concern for them. We appreciate your sharing in our ministry here and hope you willcontinue to do so.

I have just completed one year of language study and still have about a yearand a half to go. Please continue to prayfor us concerning our language study. Itis very difficult and discouraging (especially to find out how dumb you are!).

May the Lord bless you as you serveHim in your place of service. May weall continue to work together in the Lord'skingdom here until Jesus comes again!Praise the Lord. We love you all.

Love in Jesus,

Howdy, y'all! We have just finished theLunar New Year season. This is about

the biggest and longest holiday. It lastsanywhere from three days to about 30days. Most banks and businesses areclosed three days.

As for little grocery shops, markets andsuch, they are usually closed 3-5 days. You have to buy enough food to last outthese days. Kinda have to watch howmuch you eat, too. Heh, heh! ! You'll eatyour self out of food! ! Schools are outfor 30 days or more.

Red paper with gold characters areplaced over the doors and on the sides ofall good Toatists and Buddhists homes. These door signs are varied because ofthe different types of people. A businessman might put "May there be a lot ofmerchandise — may finances be abun

dant" on his door. Someone else might

write "Every mountain and river meetsin peace". A farmer might put this over'his pig-pen, cow-shed or chicken-coop,"May the domestic animals prosper."

If an elderly person has passed awaywithin the last three years, red papercannot be used. If a woman has died, yellow paper is used. If a man had died, green paper is used. These inscriptionsmight be seen, "With your whole heartremember the things past," "Rememberyour parents in your heart like a whitecloud continually floating up".

The Chinese are family conscious. Youcan see this in the door-labels "Thriftimes

is the best way to establish a family" or"Living together as a family can be aspecial heaven-sent joy". The custom offamily worship comes from too-much family conscious. To love and care for yourloved ones is God-ordained, but when thefamily comes before the worship of Godit becomes idolatry.

The last night of the official season, youcan see children, all shapes and sizes, walking together, holding a small brotheror sister by the hand. In the other handthere will be a stick with a lantern of

some shape, with a lighted candle in it.This night is called 'The Lantern Festival'.

Now, many different things are to happen on this night. Some girls will pull uponion plants in hopes of getting a goodhusband. Some time a girl casts diviningblocks and walks in the direction they

fall. She waits eagerly for the first wordsome one speaks and then rushes to afortune teller to see if it is a lucky word.If it is, she'll be married in this year.Originally, the lanterns were lit to helplight the dark night so people could seethe "spirits" of departed ones.

We must remember "The Lord is mylight and my salvation." (Psalms 27:11)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Greetings to you in the name of JesusChrist, our blessed Savior and Redeemer.May His love and watch care be with youas you seek to do His Will.

This month we would like to devote

our newsletter to our Bible School. Webegan our Bible School last summer rightafter VBS. We had such wonderful response f.'om the kids that we decided maybe it was the Lord's will for us to have aBible School each week. We averaged 24students in VBS and they all said theywould like to come every week. But during the next few weeks we saw that someof the parents didn't agree. We averagedabout 15 during the first month, but wepicked up after that. I guess some of theparents finally gave in to the pleas of thechildren because we got most of themback a few weeks later. We averagedaround 20 for awhile. At the present timewe are still at this average.

The students really enjoy singing. Theyare quick to learn the choruses that thegirls teach them. In one of the pictures

you will see Sharon Jyang doing an actionsong before the group. They love to dothis and always receive a big round ofapplause when they finish.

Another favorite time is story time. Thestudents have never heard Bible stories

before, so they are always eager to hearthem. Sane Hwang and Susan Lin arevery good at telling these stories.

The students also like to color. Each 3

month period an award is given for thebest picture colored. There was a tie thislast time with two sisters, Sherry andMary Jyan, getting the awards.

Next the students play some of theirfavorite games in our spacious back yard.None of them have yards to play in. Thehouses are all jammed together, and some

of them live in houses the size of our liv

ing room. They normally do all their playing in the streets.

Last of all, the students have prayer

and sing their goodbye song. This also isa new experience for our students. Mostof them have prayed to their idols and ancestors, but to pray to a loving Father is

lifferent. None of our Bible School stu-lents have yet become Christians. Thetiome pressure is great, most of them having an idol shelf in their homes.

Please pray for these students. We aresnclosing pictures of ten of the most faithful. These ten hardly miss a Sunday. Prayfor them by name, asking God to allowthem the opportunity to be allowed to become Christians when they come to thepoint of believing in Jesus and wanting toobey Him. "Jesus said, Let the childrencome to me, and do not stop them, because the Kingdom of Heaven belongs tosuch as these." (Matt. 19:14.)

Thank you so much for your prayers, for your support, and for your patience. This is the first newsletter in three months— we hope you will forgive us. Nextmonth we will tell you about the summer'sactivities — summer camp, VBS, and theShih Lin Evangelistic campaign.

May the Lord bless you all is our prayer.Remember the Chinese people in yourprayers.

Praise The Lord!Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

May the God of our Lord and Savior,Jesus Christ, keep you safe as He hasdone to us.

Many wonderful things have happenedsince our last newsletter. The most won-

derfulthing that has happened is that 11of our students have become Christians.

How we praise God for His wonderfulmercy and you because of your faith and

prayers.

FYom July 11 to 16 we had camp at

Gold Mountain Beach. I was not able to

go this year, but I understand they hada great camp. We had about 40 students

this year. There were no public decisions, but many of the students said they hadlearned much that was helpful to them.

We had Vacation Bible School the sec

ond week of August. We averaged about

20 each day for the week. Our teachersthis year were all Christians from ourEnglish Bible Class. Susan Liu was in

November, 1971

Alice Hwang being baptized In our home. One of six baptized on August 20!

charge of the VBS, and was also one ofthe teachers. Jane Hwang led the singing and was another of our teachers. Cel-la Shu was our third teacher. Philip Liuwas our all-around handy man, errandboy, and principal (the kids had to be dis

ciplined once in a while and Philip iswell-respected in this area). The kids allhad a great time, Jane, who taught the10-13 year olds, said that all of her students expressed a desire to become Christians some day. The main problem is thattheir parents will not let them. Pleasepray for these young people that they willnot lose this desire and some day willhave the opportunity to accept Jesus.

On August 12-14 I took a trip to thecenter of the western side of the island

to visit one of our former students, Apol-

los Lin. Apollos' home houses 20 peoplein a house that has 4 rooms — 3 bedrooms

and 1 kitchen. Yet, even under these con

ditions, Apollos studied hard in school andwas able to pass the college entrance examination and after this year of practiceteaching in his hometown high school, hewill graduate from Taiwan Normal Uni

versity. Apollos first came to our classabout a year and half ago. He is typicalof many college students here. He did notbelieve in any religion or any god. Hismother is a devout Taoist with a god shelfin their kitchen full of idols that the family

worships. When I visited him this summer,Apollos said that he had come to believethat there is only one God. But he said heis not sure about Jesus. He wants to learn

more about the Bible and about Jesus, but

there is no New Testament church in his

area. The closest church is here in Taipei,an 8 hour drive by bus or motorcycle. Please continue to pray for Apollos as hecontinues to seek for God's way in hislife.

On August 14 the Reggie ThomasEvangelistic Team arrived in Taipei tohold a one week meeting in Shih Lin. Themeeting started on Sunday and went thruThursday, with 11 decisions — 5 baptismsand 6 rededications. Since they didn't haveto leave for Japan until Saturday morning, we asked them to come to our English Bible Class on Friday night. We circulated the word among our students andwe had a record attendance of 28 that

night. The singing of the Rostevit Twins,Patty Briggs, Tony and Reggie Thomaswas wonderful. The young people are stilltalking about them. Reggie's preachingwas simple and down to earth concerningthe Love of God, As a result, 6 of our stu

dents came forward, confessed Christ, andwere baptized in our large Japanese stylebath tub. Alice Hwang, Helen Wang, RockWang, Mark Jang, Paul Li and Gary Chenwere all added to the Lord's body. PeggyChu came forward and confessed Christ

as Savior and was baptized into Christ thefollowing Friday evening. That was themost wonderful night we have had sincewe have been in Taiwan. We praise theLord for His wonderful grace!

Since that time, one former student,Peter Mai (who is now a student of TedSkiles) and 3 other students, Julia Lin,Cindy Jou, and Judy Ye have been baptized at the Shih Lin Church. We are so

happy for these new Christians and we

hope you will continue to pray for thesestudents that they will remain faithful toChrist. Many of these students, as theyreturn home to their families will have a

rough go of it. Your prayers mean much!On August 28 I took a trip to Ilan, about

2 hours from here by motorcycle, to visitanother one of our former students, JohnLin. John is also practice teaching in hishome town high school and will graduate

A '

Apollos Lin, right, and friend at Hualien

from Taiwan Normal University this next

spring. John is very close to becoming aChristian. He believes in God and that Je

sus is God's Son. His only problem now isplacing his trust in Jesus as His Savior. He is so close, yet so far. Again, I covetyour prayers for him.

We have just finished moving to a newlocation. Our new address is: No. 1, Lane

66, Lung Chuan St., Taipei, Taiwan 106.We are now within walking distance ofTaiwan Normal University and studentsfrom Taiwan National University can take

a two minute bus ride and will be within

walking distance. These two schools havea combined enrollment of about 15,000

students. We hope to be working with college students as soon as I graduate fromlanguage school. We are now in a perfectlocation for that kind of work. Please con

tinue to pray for us, too, that we mightbe receptive to God's will for us.

May God bless you all as you seek tolive for the Lord there. God's kingdomcontinues to grow as each of us does hispart.

Love in Jesus Christ,

Sam, Virginia and Shane

P.S. In April of next year, we are expecting a new addition to our family (not byadoption). We would appreciate yourprayers for Virginia because she has beena lot sicker this time than she ever was

with Shane.

way to niravana, the wise sayings of Confucious with his perfection, and the tradition offamily with its worship of ancestors, has beenover 2000 years embedding themsleves deeplyin the lives of these people. Their thoughtsof worship are the pictures of incense potswhere, with three incense sticks, one bowsthree times at each statue of a "favored one",a "respected one", and "one who has becomca buddha". These are to be bowed in front ofand prayed to because they have been madegods in the eyes of the people. In China, thedistance between god and man is short asseen in the saying, "Man can become god ifhis faith is firm." This can be seen manytimes in the great men these people have setup to worship as gods.

We can add to the background these pictures also: the plucking of the ox's hair tosacrifice to Confucious on his birthday inorder to receive the wisdom of Confucious, and the sprinkling of water from the statueof the sea goddess on sailors and fishermenin hopes of a safe voyage or fishing trip.

Many of the young people are taught evolution as a fact in the colleges and universities. They are searching to fill the void in theirlives. They don't believe in the Buddha worship or Confucious or family worship. Theydo all the motions out of respect for their

, parents. In their hearts they reject theseteachings and traditions. They are seekingto fill this empty space in their lives. Wehave the Person they need. We just ask foryour prayers that we can be able to tell themabout the King of Kings and Lord of Lordsand get them to see their need for Him.

Our immediate goal is to finish languageschool and have a speaking knowledge of theChinese language.

We would ask prayers for our study, forthe Sunday school teachers, for the studentsin all our classes — English -Bible and Sunday school and for us in presenting Christas our daily Guide.

The main problem is the people have no background for Christianity. They have only thebackground of Buddha, Confucious and familytradition. The teachings of Buddha with his
