    PRINCIPAL COMMENTS: PAUL JORGENSEN

Staff have completed extensive assessment of all students and from this we are developing stronger

and more targeted teaching to cater for students’ individual needs. This also includes developing

intervention and extension activities for students. In this year’s Annual Implementation Plan (AIP)

we are working on further development of our assessment schedule, establishing processes to

monitor student learning data through Clear Track (A data tracking program), and having a focus on

the use of data to inform classroom planning. These processes being developed and strengthened

this year will allow us to continue to focus on individual improvement for all students.

Parent/Teacher conversations will happen on Tuesday 21st March. This will mainly be conversations

around how each child has settled in, what teachers have noticed, some assessment information and

for parents to give their feelings on how their child/ren have settled in, any concerns and to find out

how they can help with their child’s learning. In term Two when the written report goes home to

parents we will again have parent/teacher/student conversations where we will trial having students

talk to their parents and teacher about their learning. We hope to develop students to lead these

conversations about their own learning. Each child in each year level will have varying degrees as to

  • how much they are able to be involved in these discussions. Teachers will support children as we

begin this style of reporting to parents.

Well done to all the children who participated in the House Athletics competition this week,

especially to Blue house who were judged winning team on the day. It was great to see many

parents attend to watch and help out. Thanks to Charlie Twomey for his organisation of the day and

to staff who supported the activities and children. We had individual age champions on the day and

    these students are listed below.

Alex Lovison, Corey Thorburn, Ashton Busk, Eli Sutherland, Aaron Kennedy-Redman, Bailey Perez

and Christian Miller for the boys and Jazmine Sanders, Tahlia Runge, Olivia Perkins, Tasman Leahy,

Graciemay Seymour, Katy Brownley and Charlotte Ing for the girls.

    WINNING HOUSE IS BLUE!!!!

Next week, we will be practising reading and spelling high-frequency words. In

reading, we are continuing to set reading goals and use various strategies to help

    us to solve unfamiliar words.

In Inquiry, we will be learning about amphibians. At home, you could assist your

child in doing some research about amphibians, or writing down some

    questions/wonderings they have about amphibians.

In writing, we are continuing to set writing goals and reflect on these goals during

    and after our writing lessons.

In Maths, our focus will be Time. We will be exploring how calendars work, as well as how and when we need to know/use time. We will also learn about the duration of time. At home, you could discuss with your child how long various events take, such as driving to school.

Our Show and Share topic for this week is: My favourite book.

Miss Stockdale and Miss Waite ☺☺☺☺

Grade 2/3 Alexander and 2/3 Atherton

Reading: In Reading next week, we will be using our comprehension and noticing

skills to think more deeply about persuasive language used in advertising. To give

your child an advantage you could ask them about rhyme, repetition and

onomatopoeia. If they can’t remember what these are, encourage them to do some

research and bring some examples in to school to share on Monday. Make sure

that your child is reading aloud at least 5 times per week and that they are reading

aloud for at least 5 minutes each time.

Mathematics: In Mathematics we have been using our developing understanding

of place value to enhance our accuracy when using measurement in the classroom.

An activity that students enjoyed this week is “In-between-ies”. You can play a

version of this game at home to give your child practice using place value. Pick a

number between 29 and 32. No two people can share the same number. What

could your number be? If your child has not thought to use decimals, ask them if

they can use their knowledge of fractions to choose another number between 29

and 32. Also next week in Mathematics, we will be exploring subtraction. To get

your child ready for the topic, ask them what subtraction is. What else can you call

it? What does it look like? Are there any tips they would give someone else about

    how to do subtraction?

Writing: Next week will be the final week for students to be revising and editing

their draft posters about “What’s Good for Me?” Although it has been a focus over

the last few weeks in writing, students need to be reminded to be responsible when

revising and editing their work to make sure that they have no spelling or

    punctuation mistakes.

  • Have a great weekend!

    Kelly Alexander and Mark Atherton.

    Preview Year 4/5/6

Our inquiry focus this week is biological science linking adaptations to the

    environment and lifecycles.

Discuss with your child the different types of lifecycles that exist – human, animal,

plant for example. Students will be recreating a lifecycle then designing an

environment for an inhabitant of their choice – it could be human, animal, insect or

    alien!

Please view and discuss with your child the following lifecyle link:

    https://www.slideshare.net/YoshyFaweta/life-cycle-15186610?next_slideshow=1

Homework: Maths: Focus- Linking Fractions to Decimals

Please log on to Maths Antics below and complete some examples following the

steps in the video. Take note of the split numbers strategy he uses at 2.34 into the

    tutorial.

For extension work, look to the right panel and click on more complex fractions and

    decimals operations

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jcW-ZgpRbM

Spelling: Write down 5 words and then break them into syllables. The more

syllables in a word the more points you earn: 1 point for one syllable (“you”) 5

points for five syllables (“unidentified”) Try and gain as many points as you can.

Identify and write the base word of each of your selected words.

Reading: Please read at least 4 times per week (the more the better!)

Remember, reading can be any written texts – magazines, comics, online articles,

newspapers and more. If your child has a particular sport/hobby, explore different

reading resources on their particular interests.

Reading can take place at any time – mornings,

afternoons, watching a sibling at a sport event-

whenever your child has an opportunity- it is

not restricted to just night time!
