It’s Musical Festival time again, and it gives me great pleasure to welcome you, whether competitor,
supporter or casual observer, to Hazel Grove’s 89th Festival of Music, Speech and Drama. Each year
during our committee meetings we discuss changes that could be implemented to improve the festival.
If you have any suggestions you feel may be of benefit to us, please speak to one of our committee
members to pass on your views.
We are looking forward once again to meeting friends, old and new, on 19th, 20th and 27th February
and also at our Winners’ Concert on 5th March.

COPYRIGHT and PHOTOCOPYING
1. The Music Publishers’ Association Code of Practice on Photocopying Copyright Works makes the following
concession for copying own choice pieces from volumes only for the use of the adjudicator at a festival,
provided that the entrant or participant has already purchased his/her own copy and that the copy made is
retained and destroyed by the Administrator of the festival immediately after the event.
2. The Hazel Grove Festival is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with the Authors’
Licensing and Collecting Society. This means that the entrants do not have to seek copyright permission for
any poetry, prose or solo dramatic items* performed, to a time limit of 10 minutes.
Performers and teachers will be delighted to know that their participation in the festival means that authors
will be directly reimbursed as a consequence of their work being performed at this festival.
Duologues and group dramatic activity are not covered by this agreement, and copyright for these items
should be sought by performers at the time of entry.
*Solo dramatic items must be announced with title and author at the time of performance to qualify for
copyright indemnity, and the performer must not change the words or gender of the character.
3. No video/audio recording or photography will be allowed during competitions.

TROPHY AND MEDAL POLICY
All certificates, medals, trophies and plaques are awarded at the discretion of the adjudicator and the Festival Committee.
First, second, and third certificates will be awarded in all Music and Speech and Drama classes where sufficient merit is
shown.
In Junior classes a keepsake Medal will be awarded to winners in the younger age groups, an enhanced First Prize
Certificate will be awarded in the older age groups.
In Adult Classes an enhanced First Prize Certificate will be awarded to the winner of the class.
A Trophy/Shield may be awarded to certain Adult Championship classes featuring Pianoforte, Vocal and Choral
performances. Any such award will be for a period of up to a year and be returnable to the festival at the end of this period.
The winner will bear the cost of any engraving.

SPEECH & DRAMA ADJUDICATORS
MARIE DIXON FLCM, LLCM (Performance) ALCM, LGSM (Teaching), MISTSD
Marie has been involved with the theatre since early childhood, with regular performances in Lancashire Comedy and
Liturgical plays and Musical Theatre - ‘Carousel’, ‘Sound of Music’, ‘Anything Goes’ and ‘Pyjama Game’ - eventually
becoming a member of Equity and appearing in Television and Theatre, and she eventually formed her own Music Hall
Company.
Marie formed her schools of Speech and Drama in 1972 and in 1975 was awarded a Fellowship for Speech. Marie has
worked extensively in schools, writing and directing and advising staff on the techniques of good speech, and has directed
drama projects for the Greater Manchester Police at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester.
Recently she was advisor to the Executives at New York Bank Mellon. She has directed mime workshops in Northern
Ireland and tours the U.K working with young performers, encouraging their performance techniques.
Marie was accepted by the British and International Federation as an adjudicator in 1986 and is a past Board and Council
Member, and in this work she has travelled the UK extensively, with several visits to Hong Kong as an adjudicator and
educator working with the many competitors on the International circuit.
Marie was delighted to be made a Fellow of the Federation at the 2012 Conference.
She has organised international conferences. She is also the North West Area representative for the International Society of
Teachers of Speech and Drama
Marie wishes all performers Good Luck in the Festival.

GEORGE R. LOGAN MA., MEd., PGCE, LGSM, LTCL, LLAM
George Logan has been involved in the festival movement for many years, initially as a competitor. An adjudicator member
of the British Federation since 1983, he has adjudicated at festivals across Great Britain and Ireland. He has been an
examiner for the Poetry Society, later the Central School, and, from 1989, for the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
He is now a member of the Trinity College, London, panel undertaking engagements in the UK, Ireland and abroad.
The main focus of his work from 1994 until recently has been the national school inspection programme, leading
inspections, both in the maintained and independent sectors. In recent years he has adjudicated at Hong Kong, Southport,
Chichester, Stratford and East London, Hounslow, Fleetwood, Basingstoke, Bromley, Eastbourne and Cork Festivals. 2015
festivals have included Cheltenham and Newry in Northern Ireland.
He is delighted to be making his first visit to the Hazel Grove Festival in 2016.

MUSIC ADJUDICATORS
TIMOTHY BARRATT ARAM, GRSM, LRAM, ARCM, LMusTCL
Timothy Barratt studied on a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, winning many major awards, and completed his
studies with Vlado Perlemuter in Paris and Geoffrey Parsons. He has toured and broadcast extensively in the UK and
abroad as soloist, accompanist and chamber music player. Whilst still a student he developed a special interest in song
accompaniment through playing for Masterclasses at Aldeburgh, subsequently partnering such artists as Dame Felicity Lott
and Robert White. In addition, instrumentalists he has worked with include Jack Brymer, Bradley Creswick and Haaken
Hardenberger.
Teaching forms a major part of his musical life and he works with pupils of all ages and levels from beginner to post-
graduate. Having worked as a coach and lecturer at the RAM, TCM and Morley College for many years, he is now Head
of Keyboard at Dulwich College. He frequently directs Masterclasses for performers’ and teachers’ workshops in the UK
and Far East, and is a busy competition and festival adjudicator.
An ABRSM examiner since 1991, he is also a trainer and consultant moderator. Other work for the AB includes co-writing
the Board’s Teaching Notes on Piano Examination pieces, selecting the graded piano pieces and presenting seminars in the
UK and Far East.
PHILIP DEWHURST BA(Hons), PGCE Philip Dewhurst was born and educated in Bolton, Lancashire. He read music at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne
under Professor Denis Matthews where he specialised in performance on the oboe. After finishing his degree, he
completed a Post Graduate Certificate of Education and went into teaching.
Philip gives occasional recitals and enjoys orchestral and chamber music playing on a freelance basis when his teaching
commitments permit. Philip also has a passion for choral music and has conducted and directed choirs and choral societies
throughout his career.
As well as adjudicating at music festivals around the country, Philip is an examiner for Trinity Guildhall and an
experienced GCSE and A level moderator. At present he is Director of Music at Cheadle Hulme School, Cheshire.
JOAN FOSTER GNSM, ARCM, PGCE, PGCA, FISM
Joan studied cello and piano as joint first studies in Manchester with Paul Ward and Kendall Taylor. After her post-
graduate year she won scholarships to study cello with Derek Simpson and Joan Dickson in London. Her playing career
has combined solo, orchestral and chamber music, including the Lydian Trio. For thirteen years Joan was a cello teacher
and lecturer in string teaching at Birmingham Conservatoire, whilst also teaching piano privately to diploma level. She was
Director of the St Cecilia Music Trust for many years, and has led teaching seminars in many parts of the UK and also in
Denmark.
Joan is a grade examiner for ABRSM and is a specialist diploma examiner for both piano and strings. She has examined in
fourteen countries in Europe, America and Asia.
In recent years she has become increasingly involved in vocal work and directs the Alverton Singers in Northallerton. Now
living in Wensleydale, Joan continues to teach, coach, organise music courses and promote concerts.
CORAL GOULD MBE, LRAM, ARCM, LTCL, Cert Ed
Coral is currently a private singing teacher, accompanist and retired examiner. She is an adjudicator member of the British
and International Federation of Festivals.
Formerly, she taught music in both state and independent schools. She was on the staff of Birmingham Junior
Conservatoire for eight years. Experience of training in Europe has involved work in Sweden and choral experience in
Hungary and Vienna. An exchange teaching period in the USA was a further highlight in her career.
From 2010- 2012 she was Chairman of the Association of Teachers of Singing of which she is a founder member. She has
directed over fifty musical theatre productions. Her book ‘Try Humming It’ has been a successful aid for new teachers of
singing and is now in its second edition. She was awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours List of 2013 for services to
Music and the Arts.

STEVEN ROBERTS M.Ed, BA(Hons), Cert Ed, BBCM, CMS
Steven Roberts has combined a career in education with his work as a conductor, musical director and adjudicator, working
both in this country and in Europe and as far afield as Peru and Bahrain. His work in education has included training
musicians and actors and he has worked extensively with partner schools as part of his past educational responsibilities.
Despite a very busy educational career, Steven has conducted numerous groups, including the Liverpool Welsh Choral
Union, The Huddersfield Choral Society, Dodsworth and Skelmanthorpe Male Voice Choirs and a variety of orchestras,
brass bands and wind ensembles, as well as being Chorus Master for concerts with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Jose
Carreras.
He is currently Music Director and Conductor with Altrincham Choral Society, Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir, Honley
Male Voice Choir and Unlimited Voices. Steven has also worked as musical director for a number of theatrical
productions, and this diversity reflects his music and drama training. He will also act as musical director for ‘Coal’, a
contemporary dance piece which will be touring in 2015/2016, choreographed by Gary Clarke.
Steven has conducted in some of the country’s most prestigious concert halls, including the Royal Albert Hall, London, as
well as conducting in the College Gardens of Westminster Abbey for The Lady Taverners and in many sacred settings,
including St Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City, St Mark’s Basilica in Venice and in Assisi and most recently in Vienna,
Salzburg, Amalfi, Milan, Paris and Barcelona. At home he has conducted a number of choral recitals at St. Paul’s Cathedral
in London. He has conducted numerous concerts throughout this country but also in Germany, France, Italy, Spain,
Belgium and the Czech Republic and with a variety of choirs, ensembles and orchestras and wind and brass bands.
He studied piano, brass and voice and has worked in a variety of musical settings.
Steven is an adjudicator member of the British and International Federation of Festivals, as well as recently becoming the
Chairman of Board of Trustees of the Federation. He is also a member of the Association of British Choral Directors and
became a Life Member of the Royal Philharmonic Society.
He is a member of The Lord’s Taverners, the cricketing charity that raises money to give ‘young people, particularly with
special needs, a sporting chance’ and is proud to be Patron of EnRich, a South Yorkshire charity which promotes the
development of any specialism in the performing and creative arts.
JEFFREY WYNN-DAVIES ARCM, LTCL, Cert Ed
Having initially trained as a singer with Lyndon Vanderpump in Cambridge, and Ellis Keeler at the Royal Northern
College of Music, Jeffrey Wynn Davies taught music in high schools in Cardiff and Shropshire before spending many years
as a local education authority music adviser in Greater Manchester. Here he was responsible for founding and developing
Bury’s extensive Music Service, which included Bury Youth Orchestra, concert and brass bands, string orchestras, youth
choir and an award winning Big Band.
His national reputation as a choral conductor includes the winning of the BBC Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year title with his
chamber choir Canzonetta. He founded the Manchester Chorale for BBC Radio Manchester, and between 2001 and 2007
directed the internationally renowned Manchester Boys’ Choir. He also conducted Harrogate Choral Society between 1991
and 2005. He is Artistic Director of the Cranleigh Choral Week, where his 250 strong South of England Festival Chorus
meets annually to perform major works in southern cathedral venues.
He has given workshops for all the major British choral organizations, and has directed choral festivals for the BBC. As
well as being a consistently busy general music adjudicator, he has sat on the judging panel at international choral
competitions, including Prague, Verona, and Malta.
He has served on the BBC Central Music Advisory Committee and the council of the Association of British Choral
Directors, for whose annual Convention he has twice been Artistic Director.
