Introduction:
Exposuretohazardouschemicalsisoneofthemostseriousthreatsfacingworkerstoday.Asanemployee,youhavethe“righttoknow”aboutthehazards.
TheHazardCommunicationStandard(HCS)hasbeenrevisedbyOSHAtoalignwiththeGloballyHarmonizedSystem(GHS)ofClassificationandLabelingofChemicals.Thereasonforthisalignmentistobringclarityinthecommunicationofthepotentialhazardsofachemical.

Allhazardousmaterialsaretobelabeled,andalllabelsarerequiredtohavepictogramsalongwiththeuseofsignalwordsindicatingtherelativelevelofseverity,with“Danger”formoreseverehazardsand“Warning”forlessseverehazards.TheGHShasaratingsystemfortheseriousnessofthehazard,rangingfrom1to5,with1indicatingseverehazardsand5indicatingminimalhazards.
TheemployerisrequiredtohaveaSafetyDataSheetoneveryhazardousmaterialtheemployeeisexposedto,andprovidetrainingwhentheemployeeishired,andwhenanewchemicalisintroducedtotheworkplace.
Allinformation,theemployeeshouldbeawareofisontheSDS,whichisacomprehensiveinformationguideaboutachemical.Tostaysafe,alwaysreadthelabelsandSafetyDataSheetsprovided,andpracticeappropriatesafetymeasures,includingwearingspecifiedPersonalProtectiveEquipment(PPE).
