We have hopefully changed the format this year so you are not all having to sit through long team reports from each manager. We have tried to represent each age group below with a mix of reports, comments and stat’s. 2013 has been a great cricket season at Hayes, both for the Colts and Adults, the weather has been fantastic, and as coaches we have seen some great potential in our Colts section. As well as the enjoyment of playing cricket, we share a goal at Hayes, to groom our Colts for the Adult sides. This may seem a long way off to some, but believe me the standard of some colts will mean we are adding to adult sides from the age of 14. I can assure you that the mens teams support the youth as they come through, and the camaraderie of playing in the senior game is a fantastic experience for the Colts to aim for. Finally thank you for your continued support and for giving us a great bunch of kids to work with. Nigel Gallagher - Colts Chairman

COLTS PRESENTATION EVENING

This season we had a real mix of kids in both ages and abilities. We had lots of “first timers” who were very eager to learn the game of Cricket.

The Super 8 competition this year was a great success. We ended up finishing 3rd in the qualifying round just missing out on a place in the final. Everyone who played learnt a lot during the matches and improved dramatically in the second round winning most of their games. The team played incredibly well and done themselves proud.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents for their support this season, turning up on a Sunday morning for training and taking the group (and me!) to the Super 8 competition.

They are a very talented group of kids who will grow up to become very good cricketers. I really enjoyed coaching them this season and am incredibly pleased with their efforts and commitment.

I would also like to thank the other coaches - Ashley Quayle in the early weeks and Lettie Hadley for stepping in with the coaching when I was unavailable and supporting the group through the season.

See you next year!

Welcome and thank you for coming along to our Colts Presentation Evening.

U11/U13/U15 GirlsThe girls this year have proved that cricket has definitely become an all

year round sport, from indoor cricket competitions at the beginning of the year right round to trials for Kent in the winter months.

London Youth Games

In March, 5 Hayes girls (Amelia, Hannah, Jess, Grace, Indigo) were selected to represent Bromley in London youth games. The young inexperienced side managed by Mike Askew were able to successfully qualify for the finals at Lords. Then in the pressurised surroundings of the indoor cricket school at Lords, they acquitted themselves well by winning 2 out of their 3 games, narrowly losing to the eventual winners.

Indoor Cricket

In February, an U13 side captained by Leah Baxter travelled to Bexley and cheered on by large Hayes crowd managed to beat Bexley U13s to win the inaugural indoor winter competition.

Kent Representative Teams

This year 5 girls from Hayes (Gemma, Indigo, Mayumi, Grace, Jess) have been selected and played for the Kent U11s with Jess and Grace having the privilege of being named as Captain and Vice-Captain respectively.

Vicky Pratt and Leah Baxter have both played for the Kent U13 spitfires.

Good luck to all the girls taking part in Kent trials between now and the end of the year.

Kent Regional Hardball Finals

The winners & runners up in the North Kent league played the winners & runners up of the Mid Kent league on finals day - Sunday 8th September. Hayes were drawn against St Lawrence & Highland Court (last year’s winners) and Greenwich were drawn against Tonbridge. Unfortunately it appeared that the best two sides had been drawn together in the semi-finals.

Hayes batted first and after some good bowling and dodgy running between the wickets we were restricted to a total of 62 for 5 off of 16 overs. This was always going to be 40 or so runs short of a good total and so it was to prove as SHC reached our target with ease for the loss of one wicket in 8 overs.

SHC have been the best side in Kent for last couple of years but hopefully as our girls develop we will be in a position to become the best girls’ team in Kent in the not too distant future.

U11 softball competitions

With 5 girls selected for Kent for the season we had a very strong group of young players. The girls benefited from winter nets from October right thru until the start of the season and we were well prepared for the first festival at the beginning of May. This took place in Canterbury and with Jess & Grace leading the way we never looked like los-ing any of our matches. So it proved and we had achieved our first Festival win for several years.

The second festival was played at the end of June at Dartford CC. We had first time appearances for Izzy and Annabelle who both saw off a few early nerves and went on to make useful contributions. Despite a close match against Tunbridge Wells we triumphed again and so that was two out of two.

By the time of the third festival, we had another new player; Rosie, who enjoyed the experience alongside her “big” sister Gemma. The opposition was a little stronger with several new teams entering for the first time. An excellent catch by the opposition put paid to our chances in our last match and we ended the competition in fourth place.

We are a taking a young team down to the last tournament of the season on the 15th Sept in Tunbridge Wells where we hope to lay the foundations for our campaign in 2014.

Lady Taverners U13 softball competition

In this competition, due to the unavailability of other teams and a rearranged date we ended up facing Greenwich in the final, who we had finished level on points with in the league. On a hot sunny Sunday morning at Hayes we played an 8 a side pair’s match and continued our winning ways beating them by 30 runs.

Lady Taverners U15 hardball competition

On Friday 28th June, Lyn took a young U15 side to Bells Yew Green for the Lady Taverners U15 competition. The girls acquitted themselves well, restricting BYG to 97 in their 16 overs but then fell just short of that target in the run chase. Ume was the star of the day, scoring 39 runs on her hard ball debut.

North Kent league (NKL) U13 hardball

This year saw us pitted up against Greenwich, Sidcup and Bexley after Dartford dropped out at short notice. We won all of the games that we actually played (4 in total), Sidcup conceded our home game with them (think they were scared after the thrashing they received). The only blemish on our record was conceding a game to Greenwich when we couldn’t field a side early in the season due to exams. We managed to get a total of 15 girls playing in this league, over the four fixtures allowing some young, inexperienced girls to take part but also proving our strength and depth.

Anna / Vicky / Grace / Jess / Amelia / Niamh / Gemma / Mayumi / Ellie / Jemima / Hannah / Holly / Izzy / Indigo / Ume

Even in the games where we lost early wickets, the girls would rally and we posted over a 100 (16 overs) in all 3 games where we batted first.

We ended up finishing the league level on points with Greenwich but having beaten them twice this season I think we all know who the strongest side in North Kent was this year!

All in all it has been a very successful season for all the girls involved one which bodes well for the future. The winter nets for the girls at Hayes school will start after the October half term (hard and softball). Also we are trying to put something in place next year to bridge the gap between girl’s cricket and the ladies 1st team – a development team, so look out for details of that.

A big thank you to all the parents who have assisted in scoring, umpiring and preparing / clearing up the ground.

Paul, Richard, Lyn & Mike

U11 BOYSU11 A

We had a good contingent of players who trained through the winter either at Hayes, Bromley District or with Kent respectively. These boys & girls showed big improvements during this period and this enabled us to be very competitive at the beginning of the season. We began with five wins out of five and it looked as if we could emulate last season’s league success. From then on however we began to face sides who benefitted from a far higher number of Yr 6 boys than us and this physical difference particularly in the batting department proved to be significant.

Despite losing several matches we demonstrated how good the team was as we played some of our best cricket in a comfortable 62 run victory over a Sidcup team who had looked to be a our main competitors at one stage. This win enabled us to finish third in Division 1 of the North Kent Junior League just one point behind the second placed team. We did have the satisfaction of recording victories against the two teams above us and the players can be proud of their performance.

U11 B

Although short of a few players at the start of the season, we started the season strongly by winning our first three matches. We then had a welcome influx of new players who were able to experience competitive hardball cricket for the first time. Unfortunately we also started to come up against several sides who probably should have been in a higher division.

Despite losing a couple of these matches we played with great enthusiasm were unlucky not to win against Bickley where we scored 103-3. They replied with 103-6 and unfortunately wickets don’t count under league rules so we had to be satisfied with a tie.

One the aims of B side is to try to ensure that everyone gets an opportunity to bat and bowl and although it’s great to win, the emphasis here is on participation and learning the game.

In total we had 28 players who played for Hayes U11s during the season and another 5 who played in the summer friendlies. Within this group we also have eleven players currently playing representative cricket so there’s little doubt that we also have a pool of very talented young players who I’m sure will continue to progress in the future.

It’s also important to remember that everyone develops at a different rate and I know there are a number of other players who with a little bit more practice will have the potential to surprise a few people next year.

Thanks  to  all  the  parents  for  transpor/ng  the  players  in  rush  hour  traffic  and  also  to  those  who  have  helped  with      Scoring  &  Umpiring.

U13 A

U13 A had a successful 2013 season, only losing 2 matches out of 12 and finishing 3rd in North Kent Junior League Division 1. The two defeats were against Blackheath in the League and against Bexley in the Cup (Bexley did bowl brilliantly that day).

Considering individual performances in 2013, 5 players had batting averages above 20 (Josh Mogford, Finlay Baker, Leo Webster, Liam Buttery and Joe Lambourne) and 4 players had a bowling economy rate of less than 4 (Finlay Baker, Josh Mogford, Elliot Lilley and Marcus Browne).

The major advantage this team had, though, was its strength in depth. All the players can bat and bowl to a good standard. This was highlighted by the victories against Old Colfeians and Old Elthamians, where 8 players in each game made solid contributions with the bat and/or ball.

For me, the two best moments in the season were (1) the win against a strong Bexley team in the league just after being thrashed in the Cup by the same team a week earlier (Leo Web-ster, Josh Mogford and Arnav Barry excelled with the bat) and (2) the fightback from bowlers Josh Mogford, Marcus Browne and Henry Baines when Sidcup look destined to beat us. It was a pleasure to work with you this season.

Well done and please keep up the good work in future seasons. Thank you to the volunteers who umpired and scored and of course to the parents who supported the team throughout the season.

Rob Mogford and Jeremy Browne

U13 Boys

U13 B

Hayes Under 13 B had a very successful 2013 season, only losing 2 matches out of 11 (One of those defeats was narrow, losing with only 3 balls to spare!). We finished second in the North Kent Junior League Division 3, which was a great achievement.

We also had an extremely exciting, enjoyable season where we took part in two enthralling ties – one tie is unusual in a season but two is unbelievable! Then we lost out to Belvedere by just 5 points in winning the league – it is amazing to think that we could have actually won the league if we had beaten Belvedere instead of tying with them on the last ball (Will Hadley, after batting brilliantly, was just a yard away from getting the winning run on that last ball)!

I believe all the players played well this season, as shown by the fact that 28 different names made good contributions to matches. In the league, 8 players had batting averages above 13 (Webster, Thistleton, Entwhistle, Pratt V, Byrne, Hefford, Painting, Hadley) and 5 had no batting average because they were never out (Harris, Browne, Corry, Lambourne, Farrage).

What impressed me the most was the improvement seen in players as the season progressed. I was particularly proud to see how Lewis Thistleton had skippered the team with growing maturity and how players seemed to start bowling better in the matches than in the nets (nobody seemed to suffer from match nerves) James Herd, Ben Johnston, Lewis Todd and Hannah Smith come to mind here.

For me, the two best moments in the season were (1) Lewis Thisleton’s, Will Hadley’s and Charlie Byrne’s late runs against Belvedere under tremendous pressure and (2) the bowling display of Will Hadley, Cameron Smart and Tom Hefford against a strong Cudham Wyse batting line up.

To all of the squad, congratulations on your achievements, good luck in your future cricket career and I hope to play alongside you in a Hayes Saturday team one day. Thank you to the volunteers who umpired and scored and of course to the parents who supported the team throughout the season.

U15 Boys

U15 B

The Under 15 B side was used this year to ensure all U15 Colts got the experience of match cricket, and then to bring up the Under 13 / 14’s into the more senior format of the game. The ball is now full size, the pitch full length, and bowling wides and no balls means bowling extra balls in the over.Exams and an extended football season meant we had to forfeit our first 2 games, a shame really as this cost us a possible top slot in the league.Marc grew in cricket knowledge, and skippered the side, he and Cameron topped the batting with over 120 runs each. Bertie proved his ability behind the stumps again, Nathan and Liam scored over 70 runs each, Liam’s enthusiastic attitude continues to inspire me !! Vicky came up from the U13 Girls side, and topped the bowling with 6 wickets.

The U14 Cup side got through to the league final, beating Bexley, Sidcup and Cudham in some great games. Expectations were high last weekend as we met Blackheath, but the wheels came off and our Batsman faltered against some great seam bowling in the first 8 overs. We lost !!

The young men and ladies I worked with in this side were a pleaseure to have, and I look forward to next year as they progress into the core of the A side.

U16 Boys

This year has been a development year for the Under 16 team.  Due to the club not having enough year 11 and 10 boys we decided to enter an Under 16 team and use it to develop our younger kids and give them the experience against older kids, which was very beneficial to our younger boys.

That said it was our one and only year 11 player who excelled in several matches.  Connor Byrne scored a hundred against Old Wilsonians along with his North Kent  Junior league and Hayes CC record breaking 205 not out against Dartford.  The innings against Dartford was one of the most brutal exhibition of batting I have seen from any player at Hayes CC and elsewhere.  I believe this record will not be beaten by a player at Hayes and the gauntlet has been laid down to upstage Connor and beat this record !

For a team made up mainly of year 9 players the boys did well and were always in the top 3 of the league, we ended up finishing 3rd but with another result during the season could well have won the league, which would have been a great achievement considering the average age of our team each week.  This experience will only benefit our younger guys going into next season and although we lose Connor next year the guys will step up and do better next year.  I am hoping for another successful Under 16 season next year.
