Special thanks to coaches Marsha Brady and Bernard Crawford (6th grade girls), Grant Henderson and Bob Sanders (6th grade boys), and Jennifer Welty, Sheron Allen, and Stefan Johnson (5th grade boys) and to basketball coordinator, Luann Alleman, for another successful basketball season! GRADE 2 NEWS (MR. DILLER) Students are currently working on the Force and Motion Unit in Science. In Math, we are finishing up Unit 5 (graphs, clocks, and measurement). Students will have the opportunity to read SCHOLASTICS NEWS AND SCIENCE SPIN to finish up their March "BOOK IT" minutes. "PLEASE" continue to review your Math addition and subtraction "FACTS" flashcards over Spring Break.

RE-MARK-ABLE THIRD GRADERS We held our Market Day on Wednesday, March 28th. The third grade students have been learning about economics in Social Studies. They had to create a business, where they are the Producer and sell their items to the second graders. The students created a poster board that had a slogan, written commercial, and more about the good they were selling. Both third grades took a field trip to the Valentine Theater to see Junie B. Jones in March and had a wonderful time.

FEBRUARY STUDENTS OF THE MONTH The following students were named February Students of the Month because they were RESPONSIBLE at Hawkins: Fatimah Almarzooq Kirstyn Lashuay Ava Barwiler Elliott Lewis Mark Bollinger Aubrey McConnell Ma’Laysia Brooks Katherine Root Ariana Church Lilly Sansom Karter Daniels Finnegan Skiver Jaydn Essig Taylor Stanford Bailey Fee Alex Sunday Samoiya Green Jaden Tovar Kinley Fee Alayna Virgin Dallis Walker Each student was nominated by their classroom teacher, filled out a Student of the Month form and took a picture with their teacher. The Student of the Month display is located directly across from the school library. We are very proud of our students who showed that they were RESPONSIBLE at school! SCIENTIFIC SIXTH GRADERS Mrs. Brady’s sixth grade students did a surface tension experiment. Students had to hypothesize how many paper clips could fit into a" filled to the brim jar of water. They got to witness the cohesion of water molecules form a bubble or film at the top of the jar, which amazed them. By the way, over 100 paper clips and counting fit into the jar. We ran out of paper clips!

Sixth grade STEM challenge winners were Milana Kellerbauer and Chelsea Jones. Students had to construct a tower of triangles using only tape and paper strips. The tower had to hold two Oreo cookies. These winners came up with the idea to anchor their tower with tape. Their structure was also the highest tower.

MONEY FOR HAWKINS Once a month, Hawkins Elementary partners with a local restaurant or business to raise funds for Field Day. This month our fundraiser will be at Dave & Buster’s, 5001 Monroe Street, on Thursday, April 19th from 4-7 PM. If you visit the restaurant/business on this date and time, the store will donate 10% of your total bill to Hawkins Elementary. SPIRIT FRIDAY The first Friday of each month is designated as Spirit Friday! On Spirit Friday, students are permitted to wear jeans (no rips or tears) and any red or black shirt (school colors). Our next Spirit Friday is April 13, 2018. An optional monetary donation will be taken from students and staff and given to the Lucas County Pit Crew. Lucas County Pit Crew supports responsible guardians of Pit Bull Terrier like dogs in our community through education, advocacy, and training assistance; spay/neuter promotion, foster care, and adoption. SPIRIT WEEK Thank you to all of the staff and students that participated in our PBIS Spirit Week on March 19-23, 2018. Our Spirit Spy spotted many school spirited students throughout the week.
