2014 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Firstly, I wish to welcome you to our 2014 presentation – it only seems like yesterday we were here at last year’s presentation. As a club we can gather as one to celebrate and express our appreciation to all the players and volunteers who helped make the 2014 Hawkesbury Saints Australian Rules Football season such a success. Our Auskick participation numbers grew to as many as 40 kids on some Friday evenings at Richmond Oval with many of them quickly transitioning into under10s footy. All of our teams over the season showed respect, competitiveness, team commitment and represented their club with much pride. The club’s base is strong and growing steadily. We will work to ensure our coaches continue to evolve in their skills to get the best from their teams, without losing the primary focus, which is on player enjoyment – as borne out by the club’s overall competition results this year. I’m pleased to report not a single Saint’s team official or player was either “red” or “yellow” carded throughout the season. It takes many people to successfully run a junior sports club ‐ so to the Saints Committee, coaches, team managers, volunteers and Norwest Jets much thanks in making my job as president enjoyable! To ensure that the club continues to grow we must have a succession plan. The club’s committee has to be stable, committed, competent and focused. Next year will be a transition period to enable others to join the committee and take the club forward into 2016. Saints has again strengthened key partnerships this year. Therefore, I wish to acknowledge and thank the Windsor RSL Club, Bendigo Bank‐ North Richmond, Bakers Delight – Coles Mall, Colorpak Limited and Ironman 4 x4 for their ongoing support. Much thanks to Dean Connors, the Manager of Greater Western Sydney Region, and his team, for their support throughout the season. Our Club registration fee will not increase for the 2015 season. The club will provide footy socks with registration next season and a Bendigo Bank footy – and there will be Saints jackets available for purchase next year. Finally, the primary reason why Saints exist is for the players. This is, and will always be, your committee’s sole focus – to ensure your kids are having fun, to participate in this great team sport of Australian rules footy and to build a club culture which is inclusive, welcoming and remains family friendly. AUSKICK

Wow, what an amazing year it has been for Auskick. A big change this year in location and day. Richmond Oval was our home on a Friday Night. This change increased our numbers form 10 last season to 30 this season. We also brought in a new age group of under 5’s. With so many eager kids who could say no. Gradually lesson plans for the AFL’s new Kinderkick program were used and they went down really well.

We had 2 GALA days this year and were able to field teams on both days. The kids who attended had an amazing time. Lot’s of fun and new skills learnt.

A big thankyou to Aiden our Auskick Coach this year. With 30 kids to teach he did an amazing job.

We also had a few parents jump in and help throughout the year. A big thankyou to everyone who had a go and especially those who got a little competitive during our Kids VS Parents games at the end of the sesisons.

Well done eveyone and a big good luck to those kids who are going to move up into our new Under 9’s Team. With so many kids ready to move up it will be a fun 2015 with all the skills they have leart

UNDER 10 RED

Wowee!!! What a big year in footy for the Hawkesbury Saints U/10 Reds. Right at the start of the season at Tom Wills Oval the tone for courage and effort was set by one of the smallest players in the competition as Adam Moxon played an inspirational game. He came back onto the ground after being injured and yelled we'll never stop, stop, stop till we’re top,top,top. Riley Brkich used his lethal left foot to great advantage in the true Hawkesbury tradition. Charlotte Warton was dynamic in the forwards and her effort at Rooty Hill with 8 goals showed that there was history here in the making.

Jack Wagner was a standout in several games. His reading of the flow of the ball to cut‐off many opposition forward pushes often turned defence into attack, in any weather we see him with a grin. The toughness and determination of Jesse Blackman was awesome as he risked head and shin. The marking and kicking skills of Hayden Elkris were a joy to watch,even if we were behind then never mind. On many occasions Tom Baker stopped the other teams in their tracks with great tackling as he would always fight and fight to win. Joshua Pettit and Cody Vassallo were ferocious competitors both on the training track and in games where they never weakened 'til the final siren's gone. Indeed like the Saints of old they were strong and they were bold. Several players joined the team as the year progressed and the brothers Mitchell and Daniel Plass were soon respected by our foes, earning the admiration of all watching as their determination showed. Mitchell Evans, Daniel Stalk and Jacob Elms all made cameo appearances and showed glimpses of the great talent to come in this mighty Hawkesbury Reds U/10's team.

The team also had a great bunch of barrackers, so thanks to all the parents/grandparents, brothers and sisters and friends who came along a shouting as all barrackers should. With special thanks to Brendan Murphy for doing a great job of coaching, and Bel Pettit as the busy, busy team manager. Also, for the Wagners and Blackmans for filling in when needed and for Carmel Howden for her great work as goal umpire.

UNDER 10 BLACK

What a great year boys!

It’s invaluable when you’ve had a core group of children who’ve played a couple of seasons together, like some of my boys – Connor, Bryce, Tully, Brock, Clayton and Aaron. These kids naturally become good leaders and teachers to the boys new to the game, and make my job as Coach a lot easier. The new boys to our team, Jordan, Keiran, Blake, Curtis and Owen (included, as his first year was interrupted due to illness), have all had a great season, and have a great future in the game.

Starting out, our team was raw, but it was obvious I had a group of boys determined to compete – not just externally on Game Day against other teams, but also internally at training. This eased my role as Coach, as all I needed to do was create appropriate drills to assist and enable the new boys to develop their skills, whilst also improving the skills of those who’ve played previously. This proved invaluable to me, as some of my core values as Coach is developing a will to win the football, to play as a team and develop respect for each other.

Boys, you had a great season in 2014. You were rarely beaten this year, and you always competed with respect. You never gave up, and that was most evident in our last tough game against Emu Plains. You played that game, and every game, hard but fairly, and you showed me that we could play as a team, demonstrating the true meaning of TEAM that I hope I have instilled in each and every one of you – our mantra : Together Everyone, Always Mates.

As a coach, what I look for during the year is improvement, and I can honestly say every single player has improved at training each week throughout the year, which was reflected in our game play on the weekends. You not only improved as individuals, but also as a team.

This year has been a tough year for me as a coach due to outside influences, and some nights were pretty tough training sessions for you boys. But you held your heads high, and you never gave up. It was a pleasure to be your Coach in 2014, and most weeks the highlight of my week was to see you at training, and to be a part of our team on Game Day.

Some season highlights:

The boys learnt how to play link up football from the centre bounce on game day, with many times the ball going from centre bounce to our goals, without the opposition touching it. This was due to great team work and effort.

Another season highlight was to see the reaction from another boy who was playing on our team for the quarter (due to evening up), score his first ever goal in AFL. This only came about from the teamwork of my boys, and one young man had the presence of mind and the compassion to give the boy a hand pass in the goal square so he could score. Tully could have easily kicked it over his head, but he didn’t. It was beautiful to watch, and a proud day for us all.

Thanks to Allie for putting up with me during another season of Junior Football, especially on the weekends when I was the most frustrated due to some umpiring decisions.

Thank you Brad for all your help at training with the boys, and to James for being our Runner, and also your help at training.

But most importantly I need to thank my boys for always making me proud, and for always trying your hardest this year. Every week you showed up excited and with smiles on your faces, wearing your Club jumpers with pride and respect.

Thanks parents for your support, and I hope to see you all back at the Saints in 2015.

UNDER 11

Our season has been a great success for all of our players. We had a mix of first time players and a number who had come from under 10s. A few of our players could have remained in U10s but decided to step up and play in the under 11s competition and we’re glad they did.

The boys have done themselves proud, displaying good sportsmanship and always displaying a great enthusiasm on game day.

I trust all of the boys have enjoyed themselves and will continue to play AFL. Their season saw them fall short of playing finals by only a couple of percentage points.

My thanks on behalf of all the players to Alicia Brkich for her work organising the players and parents with game day duties. I hope to see you all next season and thank you all for your hard work and determination in 2014.

Coach

Levi

Levi played his first year of AFL this season. Once Levi began to understand the rules, his game grew with confidence every week. Levi played in a number of positions and always made an impact in the game. I’m looking forward to see him play next season. Well done Levi.

Kaid

Kaid had a good season of footy, he was always a key player in our team, a number of times kicking goals at crucial moments in the game, he mainly played forward but was able to play in many other positions when needed. See you next season Kaid.

Clay

Clay is one of our quickest players and when he used that speed he was a handy player to have on our team. Unfortunately for Clay his season came to an early finish due to a motor cycle accident. See you next season mate.

Daniel

Daniel is a seasoned player and is growing in confidence, he is one of our strongest tacklers and has a great kick as well. He played most of the season in our backline and defended well, often sending the ball back to our forwards with his hard running. See you next year Dan.

Brendon

Always a smile on his face, Brendon has worked hard this year and it really showed. I am looking forward to seeing how much further he can go next year as he’s obviously enjoyed the step up from U10s.

Ben

Another of our players who has relished the move from U10, Ben continues to be one of those players everyone knows will turn up and put in 110% each week. A tenacious tackler and backbone of the team. Great work Ben!

Sam

Sam is one of those players who listens and learns from every game, loves his footy and will always be found where the most heat is. Respected by his team mates and the opposition 2015 will be another great year for Sam

Ned

One of the fastest players and obviously lives and breathes the game. Another one of our ‘veterans’ Ned was consistent right across the field and a great team player. Great work Ned!

Jason

There aren’t too many kids who have the amount of experience Jason has and still be one of the youngest in the team! Could always be counted on to play hard in every position, well done Jason.

Ethan

Ethan could always be counted on to go hard at the footy, and was always on the lookout for how he could support his team mates. Well done on another great season Ethan!

Harrison

Harrison is one of our smallest players who also plays with confidence, he mainly played in the backline and with Dan and Brandon made it hard work for the opposition on many occasions. This was his first season of AFL and he shows a lot of potential to become a strong team member in the years ahead.

Dean

One of those strong, consistent players, Dean is learning to read the game and anticipate where he’s got to be and what he’s got to do when he gets there. Supports his team mates and is respected for it.

Kaleb

Another first year player for the Saints, Kaleb was a pleasure to coach. Kaleb worked hard, didn’t miss a game all season and his skills improved every time he took to the field.

Oliver

Welcome to the Saints Oliver, another of our first time players and great to have in the team. Well done on your first season of AFL Oliver.

Blayke

Looking forward to Blayke’s 2015 season and watching his game develop. Blayke’s skills and confidence took a step forward with each and every game. Great work Blayke!

Jye

Not much more that I can say but excellent work Jye! So impressive in his first year at the Saints, it’s going to be great fun seeing how far Jye can take his game in 2015. Congratulations on an exceptional season Jye!


UNDER 12

It was a dream season for the U12s, but it didn’t come easy. The boys worked hard week after week, they trained, they listened, they learned, they conquered. I am in awe of their dedication and commitment to their team mates, to the jumper and most of all to themselves.

We managed to win the majority of games by mercy rule with the exception of Camden and Emu Plains where we had very close losses, which only instilled in the boys the desire to work harder. We met Camden in the Semi Final in the wet and the boys played good, hard, Saints footy and brought home a very convincing win 10.13‐73 to 1.0‐6, a testament to their training efforts. That saw us through to the Grand Final where we faced Emu Plains. It was a hard fought battle for the first half with Saints ahead at half time by only one point. Again the Saints spirit shone through and the boys ran home with the victory 10.10‐70 to 5.3‐33.

A huge thankyou to my Coaching Team, your help has been invaluable and I couldn’t have done it without you all. Thanks to the Jets players and the U14s and U15s players who ran water and assisted at training, you were an inspiration to the team. It was an absolute privilege to coach these boys this year, can’t wait for next season.

Liam Bastin #7

A fantastic season from an upstanding young man. Liam controlled our half back line with skill and grit. He was voted into the Leadership Group and also as Captain for the Finals Series, by his team mates. Well done Lemo!

Ethan Baxter #18

Ethan has a great passion for the game and plays each game with dedication and commitment. He has worked really hard this year on his tackling and attack on the footy and the rewards were reaped in an outstanding effort in the Grand Final. Great job E!

Caleb Chase #12

Caleb was appointed to the Leadership Group from the start of the season for his excellent footy brain and talk on the field. Caleb is a warrior who will do whatever it takes, play wherever he asked, and support his team mates to the end. Go Chasey!

Dylan Chase #2

Dylan knows no other speed than flat out, he plays hard and fast and never backs down from a contest. He was voted best on ground in the Grand Final taking out the John & Julie Diamond Medal. Very well deserved, awesome job Dyl!

Joshua Connelly #10

A huge season of growth for Josh with massive improvements in his skills and attitude. Josh has really impressed me this season. He has worked extremely hard and that has shown on the field. An outstanding game in the Grand Final, looking forward to seeing his development in the future. Nice work Josh!

George Dobson #16

George loves his footy and gives his all week after week. He takes a solid mark, has great kick and never shirks his duty. George is committed to his team mates and is a respected player. Yeah Georgey!

Callum Ghee #4

Callum plays hard, attacks the ball and uses his speed to chase down his opponents. An excellent back flanker and a great kick, Callum has been a solid asset to the team. He is dedicated and trains hard. Great work Call!

Anthony Goedde #14

Anthony gives everything he has to every single minute of footy he plays. He never lets up, he trains hard and plays even harder. His commitment to the team saw him appointed to the Leadership Group and he led by example. I expect a mention when he wins his first Brownlow! Awesome Ant!

Aaron Hodges #15

Aaron takes a solid mark and has beautiful kick making him valuable in our forward line. Aaron has improved all season especially with his attack on the ball. Aaron was invited into the Leadership Group by the other leaders and stood tall at training in this role. Aaron assisted other team mates, designed drills and worked hard. Great season Larry!

Thomas Jones #22

Tom had a solid season this year improving his skills greatly. He always trains with vigour and gives his best on the field. Tom is a real team player and very valuable member of the team. Great work Tom!

Bailey Langham #5

Bailey was new this year and has developed a passion for the game. He is dedicated and has worked really hard on improving his skills. His marking is fantastic and he does well in a contest. Excellent effort Bailey!

Zac Maguire #3

Our awesome rover, Zac outplays himself week after week. Guts and determination are this boy’s standard and his passion for the game is evident on the field. New to the game this year, Zac’s natural ability shines. Not even injury can stop his duck and weave, there will be no holding him back in the future. Go Zac!

Jackson McGrath #13

Jack’s game has developed well this year and I think he has found his spot in the ruck. Jack is fast and doesn’t hold back. He always plays his best and fights hard in a contest. Jack loves the game and it shows. Well done Jack!

Brayden Shields #1

Brayden’s speed and agility has been invaluable in the midfield this year. He has excellent ball skills and a great kick. He may be one of our smallest players in stature but is biggest in heart. Brayden never backs down and always gives it his all. Nice work Flash!

Mitchell Starling #11

Mitch has had an awesome season. Invited to the Leadership Team by the leaders, and voted by the players as Vice Captain in the Finals Series Mitch is well respected by his team mates. He has great speed and a nice kick. Mitch is a versatile player and does a great job in any position. Well done Mitchy!

Noah Vanderburg #17

An outstanding season from Noah this year, with massive improvements in all areas of his game. He is a natural left foot but can now kick almost equally off his right. Noah trains well and plays hard. He’s the junkyard dog, never lets his opponent go for a second, the number one tagger in the competition. Go Noah!

Ben Wickenden #6

New this year, Ben has worked really hard. He doesn’t back down from a contest and always does his best. Ben’s skills have developed well this season and continued efforts will see him move nicely into next season. Great effort Ben!

Joel Williams #20

Joel is our rock in defence, excelling in the full back position. Nothing gets past this boy with his excellent ball skills and attack on the footy. Joel has a monster kick and fights hard in a contest. His integrity, dedication and desire are a credit to him. Great job Joel!


UNDER 14

The Journey begins….

The group gathered at Bensons Lane in March for the first training session. Some of the players there on that day had never played Australian Footy before. Some had played in the u13s the previous year, in a team that didn’t win a game and others came from a relatively successful u12s team coached by the notorious task master and all round good bloke in Laurie Fairweather.

Expectations were not high in the beginning with so many new players, some players that had only played Rugby League and a relatively young group, many of whom qualified to be in an u13s team. How quickly my expectations changed. By round 3 it was becoming obvious to us that this group had ability, get up and go, leg speed and desire. Skills and tackling were improving, our defence was a strong point all year and it was being more than capably lead by Xander Kennedy. Big Thomas Pattison then arrived on the scene with Rugby League small man, tackling extraordinaire, Henry “HP” Peters and we were up and running. Week by week we improved, blokes like Ert, whom had never donned a pair of Footy boots in his life, continued to improve as the season progressed. We did lack a tall ruckman, but Ert made up for this in spades with his incredible leap and was capably assisted by fellow speedster in Ryan Starling changing from the half back flank. Ryan is also a first year player.

We ended up winning 11 games for the year and missed out on a Top 4 finish and a finals berth, all for the want of a few percentage points. But I was really proud of this team, we finished the season so well and we were in such good form that the teams in the top 4 would have been breathing a sigh of relief at our missing out. That’s Footy, but we are on the verge of something great now and I hope the journey will continue next year, that we all stick together and play for one another and on into a finals campaign in 2015…I am confident we can do it ! A big thank you from me goes to Brett Starling, Laurie Fairweather, Simonne Kennedy, Anthony Firmer and all the Parents who helped us along the way. I’ll be back if the club lets me, but only if I can coach these blokes again...I love them all!

The Team:

Luke Hodge: ( Captain ) A key Forward. A great pair of hands, vocal, a good lead for the ball and a great club man. It was a shame he missed a few games with a broken finger, but still kicked more than 30 goals. A great leader up forward. A Big kick and an accurate kick and a real lover of sprint work at training ( tic )

Xander Kennedy: ( Captain ) Masterful defender, big kick outs, “never say die” want for the ball, strong mark, a real leader in defence. Courageous and willing to do whatever has to be done, either at ground level or in the air. Has risen to another level this year, rarely beaten in a contest all year, if at all?

Adam Dobson: ( Captain ) Mid Fielder, figured highly in League Best and Fairest, sublime skills with hand and foot. A real ball winner in and around packs, gives us some grunt in the centre in the clinch’s, whilst not speedy, remains composed in traffic and invariably finds his target.

Heath Shields: ( Vice Captain ) Fast running bouncer, inspirational, breakaway Mid Fielder able to turn a game off his own boot. A player with a rare ability to be able to lift his team by his own actions on the field. One of the Young blokes ready to break out to the next level of brilliance.

Damien LeFevre: A solid defender, tall with strong marking ability. Attacks the Ball with purpose. Played in all key defensive positions, CHF, FB and running off a half forward flank. A prominent player in our Half Back line “wall” and key member of the best back line in the League.

Charlie Lawson: Solid Defender, good mark, stands his ground at all times, a great spoiler, owns his goal square and cool under pressure, vocal, oozes Leadership qualities on and off the field, all for the team and nothing but the team, lives it, loves it, puts his body on the line for the red, white and black…period.

Sarah Jones: Forward crumber and loyal servant of the Hawkesbury FC, always provided a contest when it was up for grabs and never shirked an issue. We will miss Sarah out on the field in the Saints Guernsey but hope she stays around the Club. We wish you all the best SAS!

Ekkarad “ERT” Bumrungsil: First year player, fast, can run all day, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. Had never played before 2014,and couldn’t kick a ball at the first training session, displayed incredible improvement as the season progressed. By season end one of the League elite players. Has a big future in Australian Footy.

Tully Murphy: Slight running Mid field ball carrier, first year player but took to the game on day 1, one of the young blokes. Amongst the highest posession winners week in and week out. Kicked a bucket load of Goals, great evasive skills in traffic.

Logan Burke: Small Defender with a good pair of hands. One of the Younger players but one of the most courageous players. A strong mark in congestion, never hears footsteps and never shirks an issue. A short kick of the Footy, but accurate. Will continue to try and coach him into becoming a small forward for us.

Lachlan Burnell Anderson: Streaky running Forward flanker and pinch hitting, half back flank swing man. Loved watching his bouncing runs on the outside. Has real potential and I expect him to break out soon and rise to the next level. Who could ever forget his massive goal from 40 metres out which brought us back into the game in the Blue Mountains?

Aiden LeFevre: A Key Mid fielder changing forward. Amongst the best afield week in and week out. Beautiful skills by hand and foot. A great mark, runs all day. Sometimes runs himself into the ground so we need to watch him, he will just never give in. One of the younger players with intestinal fortitude in spades. Congratulations Aiden on another great year in the red, white and black!

Thomas Pattison: A tall player that arrived in round 3. Played a blinder in his first game for the club and was clearly best afield on the day.Filled in up forward when Luke was injured and took some wonderful grabs. An intelligent player that can read the ball and knows where to be. I can see him breaking out next year and going to the next level.

Henry “HP” Peters: One of my favourite players to watch. First year player, but blessed with sublime skills. Fearless, courageous and often seen at the bottom of a contest. Superb tackling ability which he brings from Rugby League, will wrap a player up and hang on as if his life depended on it. Clearly best afield on the cold windy day at Camden. Can only get better!

Harry Morgan: Small Forward. Took some great marks in the square which he converted to Goals. Often seen hanging around the talls and fighting for the crumbs. Has all the skill required and once confidence develops we will see even more upside.

Lachlan O’Rourke: Played Forward and Wing cameo all year. Ability to win ball at critical times in games. Handles a pressure situation with his cool, calm and collected demeanour. Unshakable and never stirred, composed. Took some memorable grabs and converted. A great Mark and never takes a backward step.

Ryan Starling: First year player. Always puts in 100% on the field and at training. A speedy player that will always be at the ball. A fast ball carrier that continued to improve throughout the year. Heaps of potential as he has the right attitude to go places and is highly coachable.

JAI: Arrived late in the season. Even in the few games that he played I saw improvement. I hope he comes back next year to do a pre‐season with us.

Connor Kelly: A small wingman that always provided a contest. Courageous for his size. Was not able to play for half the season, but I do hope he comes back again. Was really starting to show improvement.

Caleb Fairweather: Small, fast Running Half Forward not averse to having a bounce. A player that is always willing to take the game on. An obvious confidence player. Confidence improved as the season progressed. Has real ability and can only get better, wonderful skills which are obviously passed down from his Father.

Connor Miller: A vocal team leader in the Back line. Handles the pressure and has real, attacking, ball clearing ability. Typical slugging back man. Annoys his opponents which is good to see. An aggressive spoiler and a real asset to the team. A funny man too and able to break the ice in the AFL pressure cooker. Everyone loves Connor, a great Club man…hates losing.


UNDER 15

We started the pre‐season training with most of our regular players returning to go around again. Within a couple of weeks the team had been bolstered by a number of new players that added more strength and run to an already strong side. I was feeling confident with the team we had built and I was looking forward to the start of the season. The boys played hard all season and their results reflected that, seeing them finishing fourth on the ladder.

The club should be very proud of all their efforts throughout the season. Whenever they took the field they showed great sportsmanship , commitment and tenacity.

The season had been mostly injury free, that was until we began to make our run into the finals and we suffered a run of injuries that no team could cover. In the first semi we were only able to put 14 players on the field, they came off at half time with a handy lead but with the second half we lost another two players who were unable to return the field. That was the beginning of the end .

Hold you heads high boys you are all now fine young men and it’s been a pleasure to be involved with your footy life.

A very big thanks to Steve and Daniel for their time and effort training the team and also running the water and messages out during games. Our manager, Marnie, who gets the boys on the field each week. Also a very big thanks to all who helped out on game day.
