Our second night will take place on January 18 from 6-8. There will be refreshments at both events.
Student Led Conference Day
On January 25, from 2-530, SOMS will host its first ever Student Led Conference Day. You will receive an invitation in December to at-tend your student’s twenty minute conference. This is a very important day for your student. Please save this date!

student’s grades.
Hawk Band Member Makes the Florida Bandmasters
Association 7th and Eight Grade Honor Band
There were only three St. Lucie County Students who made the state honor band this year. Student Emily Plank from Southern Oaks Middle
School won a prestigious position playing the Tuba on the 7th and 8th Grade Honor Band. Big Congratulations are in order to Emily and her
family!!!
Two Hawk Students Are the First to Test Out of I-Ready!
We would like to honor student Brooklyn Kelly for being the first student in our school to test out of I-Ready! She
met all standards! Our second student to achieve this status is Kervlande Amisial! Congratulations to both students
for their hard work and dedication in achieving their I-Ready Goals!!
All students currently use the I Ready curriculum in math and ELA. The goal is for all students to work for 45
minutes a week in each subject area. The data shows students who use this curriculum succeed in making
learning gains for the year. Students taking Algebra or Geometry do not use I-Ready .

Students dropped off sooner than 9:10 will be directed to Room 500 to work on I-Ready Math or Reading.
Castle HIGH HOPES Program
CASTLE offers a High Hopes for Kids Program at our school. This program is for
students experiencing divorce or separation. Groups take place during the regular
school hours and the times are coordinated with the school guidance counselor
and your child’s teacher. Divorce is one of the most traumatic and life changing
events for children. Students who are registered participate in a group with 4-8
students. The program offers the students the opportunity to discuss chances in
the family, anger management, communicating feelings, problem-solving and self-
esteem. The program runs for 12 sessions and is evidence-based.
CASTLE provides a workbook for each child and a parent workbook for you to see
what your child is actually learning in the program. The registration fee is $25. If
you cannot pay the fee, we accept a small donation. There are forms available in
the main office. If you have any questions contact Sara Frahm, Program Coordi-
nator, at 772-461-0863, ext. 504.
Code Yellow:
We had a code yellow today. This
means it was suspected there
was someone suspicious near
our campus. We locked our
classroom doors and kept
teaching, until receiving the all
clear. Kids and teachers did a
great job of following protocol.

Honor Roll Ceremonies
On November 7th , all A and Principal’s Honor Roll Students received recognition, a certifi-
cate and a special sweet treat during lunch time festivities in front of their peers. We wanted
all students to be able to see and recognize students on Honor Roll as a part of our aca-
demic culture.
January 6th from 8:40-9:40 will be our semester Honor Roll Ceremonly in our Courtyard. We
are inviting all Honor Roll parents to attend with their student for a morning donut and juice/
coffee. Ms Hargadine will speak and we will video tape the festivities to play at lunch for all
students to see. Our band will also perform.
On March 23 at 6PM we will host a formal celebration for all students who have maintained
Honor Roll or newly joined Honor Roll for the third quarter. Students will be expected to
dress up and a formal presentation will take place in the cafeteria on the stage. This will
celebrate students’ academic excellence throughout the year. Our band will also perform.

Ways Parents Can Help Their
Student with Literacy Skills
Finding Evidence to Support Your Evaluation of a Text
We strongly encourage parents to have students read-
ing from articles and the internet on topics of interest to
the family. Ask your student to find “evidence” from the
text to support their opinion about the topic. That is, can
they find the words in the text that support their opinion?
This is a major component of middle school literacy.
The key vocabulary words are:
Trace— finding evidence in the text
Claim– What is the position being presented by the
author?
Evidence– What are the facts that support the posi-
tion?
