EQUIPMENT: Goggles, face masks & snorkels are permitted. Wetsuits are not allowed. Swim suits for men may be briefs or jammers hip to knee. Women’s suits may be one or two piece shoulder to hip. No fins, hand paddles, or other equipment permitted.
SAFETY: SWIM CAPS ARE MANDATORY. Caps will be provided if needed. Competi-tors without caps will be disqualified. No personal escorts. Lifeguards will patrol the course during race.
TIME LIMITS: Swimmers must pass the half way point in the Chun’s to Waimea, Laniakea to Puena, & North Shore Challenge 1 hour 15 minutes. Swimmers not passing half way mark will be escorted to shore.

A long distance run was the final challenge for Su-sie Stephen as she completed retracing the steps of the 1914 Mana Expedition from England to Easter Island – Rapa Nui. But rather than run the marathon as initially planned, a new running route emerged – in keeping with the project’s theme of ‘retracing’. In the midst of researching the Mana Expedition Susie dis-covered the name of an ancient coastal footpath that circumnavigates Rapa Nui. The path, named the ‘Ara Mahiva’ hugs the rocky coastline of the island, taking in many of its iconic sights – namely the infamous moai statues! Katherine Routledge documented the path in her 1919 book, ‘The Mystery of Easter Island’:“There is no reason to suppose that it (the Ara Ma-hiva) is due to the imported livestock, and it has no connection with ahu, or the old native centres of population, yet to have been so worn by naked feet it must constantly have been used. This silent witness to a forgotten past is one of the most mysterious and impressive things on the island.” Susie explains why she decided to run the Ara Mahi-va path instead of the marathon, 40 miles compared to 26.2 miles: “From the beginning of this journey in February I have been retracing routes and connect-ing places. The Ara Mahiva footpath continued along that theme and I felt it was a more fitting tribute to the work of the Mana Expedition and also Katherine Routledge, who traversed the island 100 years ago before any paved roads even existed! The run for me was probably one of the most memorable I have ever
completed. ” It took Susie nine hours to make a full circle of the island on the Ara Mahiva trail, a challenging run over the island’s volcanic landscape. Before arriving on Rapa Nui Susie had completed a 1000mile bike ride across South America and finished an ultra run through England, from Darlington to Southampton, covering a marathon a day for thirteen days. The en-durance challenges were part of Susie’s fund raising effort for Pacific Aid Australia, an NGO who carry out environmentally focused projects on Rapa Nui, and in total £2,500/ $5000 was raised.The final phase of ‘Retracing Routledge’ will be back in the UK, in Darlington this September. Working in conjunction with Creative Darlington an exhibition will be held showcasing modern photographs from Rapa Nui alongside those of the 1914 Mana Expedition. I love summer. It reminds me of being a kid and having three months of freedom to just have fun. As an adult I don’t get three months of vacation each summer but I try to do something fun every day. Doing something that brings me joy like having a nice laugh with an old friend, working out with my Team or just taking the time to sit with a good book, fill my soul and help me to feel more grateful.
Gratitude is the key to happiness. My work also brings me joy. Now then, let’s take a look at what people have asked me lately:
Q: Chia seeds…I’m hearing a lot about chia seeds, what are they and should I be eating them?A: Good question. I think many people are reminded of the chia pet from years ago – the plant that grew out of the clay animal figure. According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics “Chia seeds come from the desert plant Salvia hispanica, a member of the mint family. Salvia his-panica seed is often sold under its common name "chia" as well as several trademarked names. Its origin is believed to be in Central America where the seed was a staple in the ancient Aztec diet.” Chia seeds are rich in omega 3-fatty acids, high in antioxidants, protein and have 10 grams of fiber per ounce. Chia seeds are mucilaginous – when soaked in liquid they create a sticky, gel like coating, which makes them good for thickening sauces or used as an egg substitute if you are allergic to eggs or tree nuts. You can also add them to sandwiches and salads or to your kid’s pancakes to increase their protein intake without them even knowing it. Chia seeds also help you feel fuller, longer which could aid in weight lose. Studies suggest that adding chia to your diet can also help in lowering choles-terol, blood pressure and triglycerides. So yes, give chia seeds a try.
Q: I workout inconsistently and I just do not have the discipline to make it a regular habit. What should I do?A: Working out is as much about our body as it is about our mind. The way we think affects motivation and desire
which in turn determines what we do with our body. Contrary to what people may think, discipline is a learned behavior and when practiced regularly becomes a habit. You can practice discipline in all areas of your life and exercise is one of them. Set-ting a goal is the first step. Determine what it is you would like to achieve and write it down in the present tense as if you have already achieved it. Be as specific as possible. Then write down how you feel now that you have achieved your goal. For example: My blood pressure is lower now that I am 10 pounds lighter and I really am enjoying wear-ing my favorite pants. See how that works - I’m already living my goal. Keeping that thought in your mind helps you to feel better about yourself in the moment and increas-es your desire to take care of yourself through healthy nutrition and activity. You have opened up your mind now for greater possibilities and can introduce the idea of consistency. When you train consistently you are creating habits in your body and in your mind. As we train our body our brain is very active, sending messages to our muscles via neural pathways in our nervous system. This creates muscle memory and increases our neuromus-cular efficiency. With consistency of training, we have cre-ated long term muscle memory which allows us to perform without conscious effort allowing for maximum efficiency. Riding a bike, swimming or typing are examples of muscle memory. When our body is strong, we feel more fluid in our movement, and can then associate positive thoughts with working out. Positive thinking is incredibly powerful. It not only creates good energy in our lives but also enhances our ability to bring discipline into our daily activities.Whether you want to lose weight, run faster or climb Mount Everest, a personalized program is your best bet in achieving those goals. Hawaii Athletes Win Kona Slots at Ironman Brazilby Lori McCarney, photo by Rick Keene
It was a triumphant day for these three Hawaii athletes at Ironman Brazil Flo-rianopólis on May 25. Mariane Uehara, Lori McCarney and Andrea Bess all came home with invitations to the Ironman World Championship on October 11 in Kona.
Mariane placed first in her age group with a time of 10:08:22. “It was special to race in my home country and to hear people cheering in Portuguese. I have never seen so many people drafting on the bike. That is one thing
I didn’t like. Thank you to Boca Hawaii, UFCGym BJ Penn, BioAstin, Ala Moana Dental Care, CEEPO, on shoes, and Dr. Shiu. Of course, I thank my husband Tim Marr for his ongoing support!”
Lori placed first in her age group with a time of 12:45:42. “I was a Rotary Exchange Student in Brazil when I was 17, so it was fun to return to Brazil after so many years. I really wanted to win and earn a Kona slot after coming up just a little short at many other Ironmans since my DNF at Kona in 2009. My main competition was a strong woman who got to within 2 minutes of me on the run. I beat her by 8 minutes. Thank you to KC Carlberg, Linda Kaiser, Boca Hawaii, BioAstin and every single one of you who trained with me and gave me ongoing inspiration. And, of course, my biggest thank you must go to my amazingly supportive husband and Su-per Sherpa, Rick Keene.”
Andrea placed second in her age group with a time of 10:18:15. “I raced back home to race at home. Ironman Brazil was a delight. I loved every single second of the entire race. Even not swimming my best, but biking my best and enjoying the run. The cheering crowd was simply unbelievable, giving me chicken skin. Thank you to Kona Beach and Sports, Sportstats, Pacific Island Fitness, Trifuel and Enve. I’m also very happy to be part of the CPH Triathlon Team.”

You had a great time celebrating Bike to Work day May 18th with the Hawaii Bicycling League. A friendly mechanic touched up your wonky front derailleur, you had coffee and a bagel at one of the six energizer stations, and you got down with 150 of your closest friends at the after party at Manifest. So what can you do the other 364 days a year?Hawaii is already one of the top 20 bike commuting states in the nation without ever having built a great cycling infrastructure. We have a fit population, good weather, and if you’ve driven on the mainland you know that despite our heavy traffic our drivers drive with aloha. As an athlete who trains on our roads it is in your best interest to encourage bike and pedestrian traf-fic. Drivers who are used to seeing bicycles pay more attention when opening car doors, turning and changing lanes. Your neighbors’ weekday commute can make your week-end training ride safer.There are 3 things you can do right now to make the roads in Hawaii more bike friendly:
- bike for secondary trips- stand up for bike safety - and bike to work
The genius of biking for secondary trips is that 50% of car trips are less than 5 miles. Your commute to work may be unfeasible but that ride to Longs can be easy and pleasant, and make a real impact on traffic congestion. Bonus: no stressing about parking.How about standing up for bike safety? In 2006, an overwhelming majority of voters in Honolulu passed City Charter Amendment #8. The purpose of the amendment was to tell the Department of Transpor-
tation Services to prioritize bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. So what can we do to make sure that the will of the people is heard? Attend neighborhood board meetings and talk about how safe streets impact you. Find meetings by searching online for “neighborhood board” and the name of your neighbor-hood or city. Even easier, increase the lobbying power of Hawaii Bicycling League by becoming a member. Go to www.hbl.org and click on “join.” Hawaii resi-dents want their tax money to pay for safe places to ride, walk and run: stand up and be recognized as the
vocal majority.So you’re running errands on your bike, you advocate for cy-cling in your community…what’s next? It’s time to check out com-muting by bike. As an athlete, that’s an excellent choice. The
additional time on your bike can make a significant impact on your speed and fitness. The average bike commuter loses 13 lbs in their first year commuting. A five mile trip can easily burn 300 calories, depending on your weight and effort. Your bike commute revs up your metabolism an extra two times a day, increasing your overall metabolic burn rate. For triathletes it’s an easy way to hang on to some cycling fitness during a swim block. For bike racers commuting miles can be part of your strategy to keep mentally fresh in the off-season without abandoning your bike.Need more incentive? Hawaii Sport Magazine: When did you start com-muting to school?Amy Vasquez: I’ve been riding with Caiden to school for about 5 years.
HSM: How did you get started?AV: Caiden’s first school was about half a mile from our house. It really didn’t make sense to drive him, riding bikes was much faster than waiting in the drop-off line. When we started Caiden was on a trail-a-bike but he’s since switched to riding his own bike.
HSM: What has surprised you about bike commuting to school? AV: It took a few years but pretty soon we had a whole gang of kids riding to school. People told us they had always wanted to try it and we showed them it was fun and easy.I also didn’t realize how much more opportunity there is to interact with nature on a bike. On the way home Caiden and I stop and look at plants and animals. It’s a great opportunity for enrichment and quality time with Caiden. It also ensures Caiden gets exercise every day!
A Bike Commuter
Our friends at the Honolulu Police Department (HPD) are there to help you when in need. Here's how to ask HPD for help if you encounter a dangerous and ignorant driver.If you’re riding safely and legally (see HRS291C-145), tak-ing the lane if required, using correct signaling, and a driver still harasses you, don’t stress! Follow these steps to stop the danger.
Step 1: Remember the license numberTrain yourself to look for and remember the license num-ber. Also helpful: make, model, color; driver's gender, hair color, size, other identifiers (HPD wants to check if you remembered the license number correctly). Note what time and where the dangerous driving happened.If the harassment is serious enough to make you feel un-safe and threatened with harm, move to a safe place and call 911. Ask HPD to issue an alert to police officers to stop this dangerous driver.
Step 2: Engage with HPDIf the dangerous driver was mainly dangerous to you by driving close, honking angrily, speeding past you, or yelling, continue riding safely and predictably. Try not to get mad!Reach your destination or somewhere you can safely wait for 15-30 minutes and call HPD through 911 (Police non-emergency) or (808) 529-3111. Tell police dispatch:You want to report a dangerous car/truck/bus driver and would like to report to a police officer. Tell them the license number, car make, model, color , driv-er identifiers, time and location you remember. Give them your name, phone number, and a current loca-tion where the officer can meet you.
Step 3: Explain why the driver is dangerousOnce the officer arrives, explain what the driver did that was dangerous and made you feel threatened for your safety. You may be asked to fill out a police report. Re-quest that you’d like the officer to visit or call the driver and explain to them the rights of cyclists and how they drove was dangerous. The officer cannot arrest or cite the driver, because they did not witness the incident, but they can educate the driver. Ask the officer to please call you back and report what happened.
Is this worth your time?This usually takes me only 15 minutes, and takes the offi-cer 15+ minutes to follow up. The officer will call someone who most likely doesn't know the laws and rights of cy-clists. Hopefully, this experience will teach them about how they should act around cyclists. There is also a record that this driver was reported as being dangerous.
What if the officer refuses to contact the driver?70% of the officers I have contacted have willingly complied with my requests when incidents like this occur. If you encounter one who refuses or disagrees, politely ask for their name and badge number, and ask them to call their supervisor. It’s HPD protocol to stop dangerous drivers! You can also contact the District Captain or [email protected] - I’m happy to follow up on the issue.
I’ve made around 45 of these calls since 2010- that’s 45 motorists HPD educated about cyclists’ rights and they probably told their family and friends! I’ve always had positive return calls from the officers who say that the drivers express surprise, and then apologize for their actions, promising that they now understand the law and won’t do it again.If all cyclists did this, what would happen? More drivers would be educated! Getting mad and yelling at dangerous drivers may not change their attitudes and driving habits, but educating them with HPD's backing
has shown that it can.So instead of yelling and getting angry at drivers; try smil-ing, waving and making friends. You’re not only making your ride more enjoyable, but you’re helping change the attitudes of drivers towards cyclists - one driver at a time.And the next time you have the chance, thank an HPD officer for the critical work they do to keep us all safe.

With the Honolulu Century Ride on the horizon, now is the time to review common cycling injuries. Many injuries occur due to poor bike set-up or improper pedaling mechanics. In addition to medical management, proper bike fit is essential to prevent and recover from these injuries. The following is a list of common injuries we see at JACO Rehab and possible reasons why they may be occurring.
Is your seat too high? Achilles pain: A high seat forces you to push your toes down (plantar flex), which causes a constant contraction of your gastroc-soleus. Make sure your cleats aren’t pushed all the way forward so that on the bottom of your pedal stroke you can pull your toes up (dorsi flex). This will let the Achilles relax during a portion of each pedal stroke. Knee pain (side): A high seat can cause excessive stretch and increased friction along the outside of the knee where the iliotibial band (ITB) crosses to attach onto the tibia. Toeing in when riding can also irritate the ITB. Hip pain: Pain on the outside of the hip can be due to excessive stretch of the ITB, or the fact that the hips have to rock back and forth to reach to the bottom of the pedal stroke. Low Back Pain: A high seat can cause overextension of low back muscles in a repetitive manner.Is your seat too low? Knee Pain (front): When you are not extending enough in your peddle stroke the quad becomes overworked and fatigued, which can lead to irritation of the patellar tendon (front of knee cap). Hip Pain: A seat that is too low will make the hip flex excessively and can cause impingement. Low Back Pain: If the seat is too low it won’t allow the muscles of the spine to stretch out and cramping may occur. Are your handlebars too low, or your seat too far back? Neck pain: Overreaching causes tension in the neck and upper back. Try to keep your shoulders relaxed. Low Back Pain: Overreaching causes tension in the low back as well. It may cause an anterior tilt of the pelvis to reach the handlebars, which puts extra stress on the lumbar spine. Arms/Hands: Excessive pressure on the arms and hands can cause tingling or numbness from nerve impinge-ment.
How do you fix the problem? Correct biomechanicsConsider a complete bike fitChoose gears that allow a higher cadence (between 75-80 RPMs)Don’t make huge changes in training program—slow and steady increases of mileage no more than 10% a week. If your pain does not go away, visit a physical therapist at JACO Rehab to help get you back on the road pain-free!

The Hibiscus Half Marathon is a part of the Tropical Triple Crown Se-ries, but don’t be fooled by the name. This race includes a 5 miler, 15K or half marathon option! The race starts and ends at Kapiolani Park and the parts in between are just breathtaking. My favorite part was jogging around Diamond Head while watching the sunrise. The course was most-ly flat with a couple of hills. Finishers got a shiny hibiscus medal along with lots of refueling goodies as they crossed the finish line. This race is a benefit for the Arthritis Foundation. and is definitely for any age or speed. I can’t wait to be a part this race for years to come!

RACE REVIEWThis is a wonderful and well laid out course for the newbie, for the out of towner and especially for the long time triathlete that just wants to have fun and be fit with friends. Furthermore, the location allows for a large number of participants, this year had 1500 participants.
The swim portion was the main reason for me to sign up for this course. The water at Ala Moana Beach Park is flat. As coral surrounds this area, the water is protected from waves and certain ocean critters. This makes it great for the newbie to try out a triathlon of this distance. The swim portion of this race is a straight line, out and back. The start is at Magic Island.
The bike portion of this race was relatively easy. The road is a flat out and back. With the exception of a slight incline on the way out to Aloha Stadium, it was relatively flat. Flats are my strengths, so the course was in my favor.
The run portion was a bit confusing but yet nice for spectators. Since the park is a bit small, participants had to run around the park twice. The up-side to running around in a loop was that spectators did not have to move around to watch their favorite participants. Full results can be found here www.honolulutriathlon.com

I’m a sucker for new sunglasses, I love looking through immaculate lenses and I love the fresh look a new pair can give my old cycling kit. The Tifosi Duro doesn’t disappoint in either optical clarity or style. My Duros came with three lenses; my favorite is Smoke with Red Glare Guard. The Tifosi Glare Guard really worked, my eyes felt rested but at the same time colors and detail remained sharp. I dislike using glasses that are so dark that I’m not experiencing the beautiful colors of Hawaii, and if anything the lenses enhanced the view. For mountain bikers the Duro worked well in dappled light and alternating light/shadow conditions.The Duro also has a lot of style and attitude, these are glasses that will make you look faster. I tested the Crystal Clear, but the Duro is also avail-able in Neon Green and Gloss Black
