What elemental style do you bringto your home? Are you obses-sive about cleanliness and order

or do you save everything for a rainy dayand then have trouble getting rid ofthings? Is your house a mess and youdon’t care or do you delegate things to ahousekeeper? In feng shui, your homeand house-management style is a directexpression of your elemental personality.

The five element theory

Each element (water, wood, fire, earthand metal) is a form of energy with itsown unique qualities, expressing itselfin many ways. We can find the elementsin shapes, seasons, tastes, directions, organs, personality traits, colors andmore.

To balance an area, feng shui tradi-tionally uses the five-element theory todetermine what element is dominant ordeficient, but it is fun to look at the ele-ments in terms of personality andhouse-management style.

Water

Water is free-flowing, representingboth movement and clarity, never let-ting obstacles get in the way. Peoplewith strong water personalities areintuitive, spontaneous, creative andopen to reorganizing and changing theenergy every so often to avoid stagnan-cy. Yet, they often have too much goingon to worry about clearing up theirspace. Their homes have lots of per-sonality, and contain unique one-of-a-kind furnishings. Philosophers, painters and metaphysically orientedpeople often are water personalities.

Wood

Wood represents growth, upwardmovement, practicality and new begin-nings. People with strong wood person-alities are always on the go, practical,

know the art of delegation and likethings functional so that they can keepon track. Active during the day, theycrave a peaceful home environment. In

HOW DOES HOME STYLE REFLECT YOUR

ELEMENTAL PERSONALITY?

Page 3: Hawaii Renovation Apr 22 2012

One of the world’s mosttrusted photovoltaicpanel manufacturers,

Mitsubishi Electric, has juststepped up its exclusive rela-tionship with Alternate Energy.

On a recent trip to Japan to visitMitsubishi headquarters and factories, theAlternate Energy team got the officialnews that they have been named the firstElite Mitsubishi Electric Dealer. AlternateEnergy is the only PV company in Hawaiito hold that distinction.

Alternate Energy executives CraigKawamura, Mike Ito and RichardAgbunag were the first clients allowed totour all of Mitsubishi’s facilities, includ-ing the Tokyo headquarters, the cell man-ufacturing factory in Nagoya and theassembly factory in Kyoto. They wereeven invited into the top-secret Research& Development Center in Osaka, wherethe company is leading the way on “smartgrid” technology to help manage PV loaddistribution for the cities of the future.

The team witnessed the technology thatallows Mitsubishi panels to boast theindustry’s highest possible longevity andsafety measures, which far exceed stan-

dard benchmarks, all conducted in spot-less, state-of-the-art factories.

They also found that Mitsubishi’s“seven guiding principles” resonateddeeply with them: trust, quality, technol-ogy, citizenship, compliance, environ-ment and growth.

After an intense 10 days in Japan, theAlternate Energy team returned homewith a renewed sense of pride and confi-dence in the product. Sales managerKawamura said, “We now know first-handthat we are selling the absolute best prod-uct on the market.

“When it comes to PV panels, there area lot of options out there with new manu-facturers cropping up all the time. But

with such an important home investment, this is one area where you don’t want toskimp on quality or go with an untestedbrand name.”

Mitsubishi is a recognized world leaderin the manufacturing, marketing and salesof electrical and electronic equipment. Itsproducts are used in information process-ing and communications, space develop-ment and satellite communications, con-sumer electronics, industrial technology, energy, transportation and building equip-ment. A conservative company with $45billion in revenue last year, it is a well-diversified, established leader in electron-ics, and a brand name you can trust.

Of course, all that expertise is distilled

into Mitsubishi Electric’s PV systems, which are designed and built not just foroptimal efficiency, but for long-term relia-bility. The company’s 25-year warranty issolidly backed by its more than 80 years ofexperience providing reliable, high-quali-ty electrical products.

Perhaps most important for Hawaiihomes, Mitsubishi panels are engineeredto withstand tough outdoor conditionsincluding winds up to 130 mph andcoastline corrosion. While some manu-facturer warranties specify a 500-meterminimum installation distance from saltwater, Mitsubishi extends its warrantyon modules installed near salt water, making the panels an ideal choice forHawaii.

Alternate Energy is proud to be theonly authorized Hawaii-based dealer toprovide Mitsubishi’s PV modules directfrom Japan. Customer demand speaksloudest of all: Owner Bruce Ekimurareports that Alternate Energy wasresponsible for 10 percent of the 30megawatts installed in Hawaii in 2011,and has become the leading installer ofMitsubishi panels in the entire UnitedStates.

Last but not least, if selecting qualitymodules is crucial, so is the experienceand track record of the installer. That’swhy Alternate Energy is working tomodel its installation protocols afterMitsubishi’s own guidelines in Japan —where installers are required to pass arigorous, exclusive course before theyare allowed to install the product.Alternate Energy’s new facility in PearlCity allows installers to hone their skillson sample rooftops made of the mostpopular roofing materials used in Hawaii, ensuring that the team has mastered thebest practices in the industry before theyever climb up on a customer’s rooftop.

Ekimura said, “Our customers tell me itfeels good to know they are working witha longtime, established local company andproven manufacturers when they makethis all-important investment for theirhome or business. And that feels good tous.”

Alternate Energy Inc. is located at 96-1276 Waihona St., # C124 in Pearl City. Callthe company at 842-5853 (Oahu) and 872-9592 (Maui), or visit it online at www.AlternateEnergyHawaii.com.

Island Style Fur-nishings of Kane-ohe is the exclu-

sive dealer ofAustralis Leisurebrand all-weatherfurniture, which wasdeveloped in theland down under towithstand the coun-try’s harsh environment.

The key to the furniture line’s suc-cess has been choosing durable andappealing materials. Merbau wood(also known as kwila) was regarded asone of the most durable and stable tim-bers in the world. It grows in NorthernAustralia and across Southeast Asia. Itis well-known as the wood of choice forbuilding docks, decks and flooring.Merbau is the perfect wood for outdoor

furniture. It is twiceas hard as teak, whichmakes it resistant toabrasion, pitting orroughening.

Prior to manufac-turing, merbau is kiln-dried to a moisturecontent of 12 percent. This stabilizes the

structure of the timber so it doesn’twarp or crack. The furniture containsreddish-brown tannin, which gives itscharacteristic color. This tannin makesthe wood naturally rot-resistant andinsect-proof. The furniture is con-structed using mortise and tenon jointswith cross doweling. This preventsloosening of the components over time. All the hardware is corrosion-resistant,304-grade stainless steel and nickel-

For many people, the onset ofspring and summer is the idealtime to take on a home

improvement project. Paint is a pop-ular choice for those looking to fresh-en up their space, given that it is aneasy, economical activity and a funway to make a dramatic difference.

In fact, painting tops homeimprovement wish lists, according tothe 2012 Spring Home ImprovementSurvey by the National Associationof the Remodeling Industry (NARI).With seven of 10 homeowners plan-

ning home improvement projects, nearly half cite painting as the most-desired need. They say that bed-rooms and bathrooms are the firsttargets for fresh paint, followed byliving or family rooms.

“People are looking for more cost-saving ways to enhance their spaces,”says NARI chairman Paul Zuch, cer-tified remodeler. “Some of the mostdramatic transformations are proj-ects like resurfacing cabinets orchanging kitchen or bathroom hard-ware, as well as painting the interior

or exterior of your home.”With today’s technologies at your

fingertips, determining the rightpaint color is easy, and anyone can betheir own interior decorator. Hereare some tips to keep in mind:

• Choose colors like a pro using coor-dinated color collections. “It’s easy toachieve designer looks in your ownhome with HGTV HOME bySherwin-Williams,” says DavidBromstad, HGTV designer. “Each ofthe collections represents a style tomatch your own, and features colorsthat work together in any combina-tion. The wallpaper coordinates withthe colors and the exterior color col-lections highlight your home’s archi-tecture to achieve a harmonious lookroom to room, inside and out.”

• See your finished look without pick-ing up a brush. With Sherwin-Williams’ color visualizer, you candigitally repaint your space. Or getinspired with Chip It! (www.letschip-it.com), which instantly turns anyonline image into a color paletteusing more than 1,500 colors. Withthe mobile ColorSnap app, you canturn anything that inspires you intopaint colors. Capture an image withyour smartphone and you will beable to see the paint color and twocomplementary colors.

• Liven up your living area. Tryrevamping the bedroom, giving newlife to an old piece of furniture orstaining the deck.

• Define your style. Make a statementcombining bolder paint colors withtheir neutral counterparts.

•Use high-quality materials. Spendinga little more at the outset savesmoney in the long run.

work space to organize personal documents and files, awell-thought-out home office can help you stay pro-ductive, efficient and organized. Before beginning thedesign process for an office space, think through howthe space will be used and ask yourself these questions:

• What activities will take place in the space, and whowill be utilizing this area?

• What are the storage needs, and where in your homewill you set up the office?

• What type of connectivity/technology will be neces-sary for this space?

Once you’re ready to start the planning and designprocess, consider a few important things:

Flexible and functional

A home office should be comfortable, but not toocasual that it lacks structure and function at theexpense of productivity. Whether you opt for a desk ora table, be sure to evaluate how much work surface isneeded before you make the purchase. Consider howmuch space your computer and phone equipment, wires and cords, files and paperwork will occupy. It’swise to invest in a high-quality ergonomic chair thatcan help promote your overall well-being.

Orderly and organized

It’s easy to let a home office become overrun withpaperwork, mail, bills, etc. Giving thought to smartstorage solutions from the get-go will help minimizestress in the long run. The good news is you don’t have

to settle for commercial-looking metal file cabinets tostore everything. QualityCabinets offers a number ofaffordable cabinetry options that provide smart storageand have the ability to blend in with the decor of therest of the home.

“A cabinet has the ability to look and function like ahigh-end furniture-quality desk for the home office, ata fraction of the cost,” says Sarah Reep, director ofdesigner relations and education for QualityCabinets.

Light and lively

Good lighting in a home office is essential. Whileoverhead light is helpful, your desk and work spacesshould also feature a few task lights for reading, writingand computer work. Adding a decorative table lampcan help maintain a homier feel. The amount and typeof lighting really depends on when you’ll be doing thebulk of your work and can vary drastically throughoutthe day. Installing light dimmer switches and addingwindow treatments can keep light at optimum levels.Painting a splash of color on the walls, adding colorfultextiles or artwork reflective of your personality willmake the space feel lively and inspiring.

Kitchen remodeling canbe a daunting task, butcabinet refacing makes it

easier on many levels. Refacingactually can save you money

because it keeps the existingcabinet boxes in place. Withrefacing, only the exterior ofthe cabinets — doors, drawersand hardware — are replaced.

This means you can change theentire look of the cabinets bychoosing a new color and style.

Refacing also is an easy wayto update your kitchen at lessthan 50 percent of the cost ofbuying brand new. By not rip-ping the cabinets out of thekitchen, you save on labor andmaterials.

Many have that one problemarea: the pantry that seems tohave 10-year-old expired cansin the back, the corner cabinetthat you haven’t explored inyears or the lost corner cabinetthat you know has storagespace somewhere back there, but you just can’t get to it.

Essential Cabinet RefacingInc. can help you find solutionsto these problems by doingsimple carpentry modificationsor adding some cabinet insertsor special hardware. Best yet,the job need not cost you thou-sands of extra dollars to do it.

If a new kitchen is what youdesire, contact EssentialCabinet Refacing Inc. immedi-ately. The company builds newcustom cabinets in its shop.Everything is made to order bya team of skilled staff mem-bers. The company has been inbusiness for 21 years andprides itself on high-qualitywork offered at reasonable, competitive prices.

Spring has arrived andwarmer weather is on theway. The best way to ensure

that your home or workplace willremain cool and comfortable is tobe ready with a new, efficient,split-ductless air conditioning sys-tem.

Systems sold and installed bythe Aire Conditioner Shoppe areavailable in a variety of styles andprice ranges. You can choose a sys-tem that cools only or one that alsoheats to keep your home or work-place at your preferred tempera-ture level for the cooler days.

“This is also a good time toschedule servicing for your exist-ing ductless split system, so it willcontinue operating with high effi-

ciency when the hottest weatherhits,” said Aire ConditionerShoppe owner Neil Wiedemann.

The latest ductless split systemsprovide zoned comfort and areengineered to install quickly andeasily. These revolutionary newsystems available from the AireConditioner Shoppe, which spe-cializes in Fujitsu and Mitsubishi, provide both heating and coolingwith a push of a button on theremote control. They also provide

individual temperature controlthroughout your home or businessso each room, zone or floor will bethe temperature you set.

Concerned about air quality? These systems have the capabilityto filter out dust, mold spores andmicroorganisms. The Dry Modehelps to control humidity levels, even when cooling isn’t needed.Other standard features includeSleep Timer Auto Changeover, 24-Hour Timer Cold Prevention, AutoRestart/Reset Low Ambient andAuto Louver: Up/Down, Left/Right.

Concerned about appearance? The cooling-only wall mountedunits, designed for single rooms, areslim and stylish. Indoor units have aclean, aesthetic design and are pow-erful, though small and shorter inlength than competing units. Theyblend into any room and are idealfor areas with limited space. Thevariable-speed compressor helpssystems adapt to shifts in heat loadcaused by afternoon sun.

Concerned about noise? If soundcoming from your current systeminterferes with listening to music,TV, conversation or even fallingasleep, it’s time to treat yourselfand your family to a new ductlesssplit system. These new air condi-tioning units are so quiet you won’teven know they’re on.

How about cost? A new, efficient

ductless split system can keep youcomfortable in your home for pen-nies a day. And the higher theSEER (Seasonal Energy EfficientRatio), the more you save on elec-tric,” Wiedemann said. “The oper-ative word is ‘efficient’ — old ormalfunctioning air conditioningsystems are energy hogs that don’tdo the job effectively and run upyour electricity bills. The air condi-tioning systems available at theAire Conditioner Shoppe are thenewest models that incorporatethe latest technological advances.”He pointed out that split-ductlesssystems can be just as efficient ascentral air conditioning, or moreefficient in terms of energy savings, depending on the lifestyle of thehomeowner.

Wiedemann, who has been in theair conditioning business since1979, sells and installs split-ductlesssystems on Oahu, as well asportable air conditioners. He alsosells the less expensive windowunits that are often the choice forapartments, condos and houses.“Even the window air conditioningunits, which are generally what yousee in older apartment buildings ortownhomes, have been extensivelyimproved both in efficiency andappearance. However, the tenantand/or owner needs to obtain per-mission from the managementcompany and/or apartment owners

association to install any type of airconditioning,” he added.

Both ductless split systems andwindow air conditioners are ondisplay at the Aire ConditionerShoppe showroom in Waipio andalso shown and described on thewebsite, www.aireconditionershoppe.com. The company in-stalls, repairs and services what itsells. Wiedemann guarantees thelowest prices for any product hesells with installation of the sameequipment. For 10 years running,Fujitsu has named him “Dealer ofthe Year.”

The Aire Conditioner Shoppeoffers free on-site estimates anddesign consultation. Wiedemanncredits his company’s success to astrong commitment to customersatisfaction. The Aire ConditionerShoppe’s slogan is “We do it rightthe first time.”

To make an appointment tomeet with an estimator at yourhome or office, call Wiedemann at676-1455.

“When our estimator reviewsyour needs and you make a deci-sion on the system you want toinstall, you will have a quote thenext day by phone or fax. If thecustomer is satisfied, we draw upthe contract. Once I set a price, it’sfirm and it will be guaranteed thelowest available price with thesame equipment,” he said.

HAWAIIRENOVATION

Now, more than ever, homeownersare adding to the value and com-fort of their homes by renovating

bathrooms into private retreats with lux-urious touches that rival those of anupscale spa or resort.

Ron and Susan Bishop recently com-pleted an extensive remodel of the mas-ter bathroom in their 20-year-old home. The remake covered nearly every squareinch of the space, including the installa-tion of new cabinets, tile, floor coveringsand lighting. The couple says one of thebiggest highlights is the custom shower

enclosure, made from Clarvista glass byPPG, which uses a fused-on coating tokeep its showroom appearance overtime.

“Few things detract from the appear-ance of a luxurious bathroom more thana shower door covered with waterdeposits and soap scum,” Ron Bishopsays. “Susan and I made it a point to finda product that would keep its good looksand be easy to maintain. We completedthe renovation on our master bath morethan a year ago, and the glass on ourshower enclosure still looks brand new.”

When considering an update for yourbathroom, whether you choose to do anextensive remodel or a smaller project, most kitchen and bath designers agreeon these tips:

• Consider the size of the bathroom. Ifyou have a small room, look for ways tomake it feel more expansive. A sleek, stylish glass shower enclosure helpsyour bathroom appear more spacious, and in most instances, a frameless show-er enclosure will provide the cleanest, most open look. If you decide to go witha framed shower enclosure, you’ll havetwo choices: frameless sliding doors or

framed doors. For framed doors, be surethe finish of the metal framing and han-dles matches your bathroom fixtures.

• Think outside the box. Taking a cre-ative approach to bathroom necessitiescan help you make the most of yourspace. For instance, the majority ofshower enclosures are square or rectan-gular, but today’s designers encourageyou to think about other shapes. Don’tbe afraid to consider a circular or oval-shaped enclosure, a triangle or even astandard shape with an artfully bowedglass door, which can redefine the spaceand make your bathroom more versa-tile.

• Don’t skimp on the glass. All glass usedfor shower enclosures is safety glass, which means it is tempered to make itstronger and more shatterproof. Thatdoesn’t mean all shower glass is alike, though. Most shower doors and enclo-sures are fabricated from conventionalclear glass — which typically has alight, almost imperceptible green cast— or some variation of frosted glass. Ifyou want a look that’s chic and ultra-clear, ask your bath designer or show-

room retailer about Clarvista onStarphire glass.

• Brighten things up. Repainting yourbathroom with light colors can make itfeel more spacious. If your bathroom haswindows or skylights, use window treat-ments and accents that maximize theamount of light that comes through togive the room a more airy feel.

• Find the best use for your space. Movebathroom cleaning items to a hall closetif you are stretched for storage space inyour bathroom, especially if you havefreestanding storage units that are takingup valuable floor space. If you need morestorage space, consider adding built-incompartments if possible between yourwall studs to maximize useable space.

It’s been shown time and time againthat remodeling a bathroom can add to ahome’s value. Whether you want to sellor just enjoy your home more, it’s one ofthe most practical and dramatic ways tomake your home more appealing. This is the first of athree-part series.

When Alan Nelsonand his wife,Cyndi Keller,

decided to live in Alan’schildhood home, it didnot reflect the lifestyle orpersonal character theyhad developed as a fami-ly. They decided todemolish it and startfresh.

At the BIA HomeBuilding and RemodelingShow in 2010, Alan andCyndi visited GrahamBuilders’ booth andsigned up for the de-sign+build company’s free“Building Your Home forLife” seminar.

“We attended GrahamBuilders’ seminar to learnabout the home buildingprocess,” said Alan. “Itwas clear Graham Build-ers was a custom builder,as opposed to a cookie-cutter contractor. (Thecompany’s) seminar wasgeared toward individualneeds.”

Alan and Cyndi sub-scribe to the philosophy

that what is built in theouter world is a mirror ofan individual’s innerworld, and as SirWinston Churchill oncesaid, “We shape ourdwellings and ourdwellings shape us.” TheNelson-Kellers believe inbuilding responsibly andcaring for our built envi-ronment. They wanted ahome that representedeach of them personally, while being respectful oftheir neighbors in thecontext of their neigh-borhood.

The goal was to build ahome in keeping with thelow-key elegance andrelaxed waterfront life-style of Hawaii Kai.“Graham Builders helpedinterpret our personal‘inner world’ into a homethat is truly reflective of

us as individuals, but notout of line with its envi-ronment,” the couple said.

As a result, the moderndetailing of the Nelson-Keller home will notcompete with island tra-dition. Stained latticework on the exterior willadd visual warmth whilekeeping the inside shad-ed from the sun. Theexterior will be clad withcement board on a rain-screen system for addedventilation for the facade.

“This is not your aver-age two-story home,”said Evan Fujimoto,Graham Builders’ presi-dent. “We designed a‘clerestory plan’ thatallowed them to achievethe idea of taking vaultedceilings to the nextlevel.”

Ceilings will measure13 feet high in the kitchenand 12 feet high in theupstairs hallway. Abun-dant natural light willbrighten the hallway, staircase and most everyroom in the house. Themaster bedroom willboast 10-foot ceilings, providing an open andspacious feel that is con-ducive to Hawaii’s in-door-outdoor lifestyle.

“Graham Builderstreated us with respect —no hard sell,” said Alan.“We did our ownresearch and got referralsfrom friends who hadworked with GrahamBuilders before. GrahamBuilders has a reputationfor excellent work. Theyreally listened to us andaccurately interpretedour wishes.”

This story is part oneof three that will followthe Nelson-Kellers intheir design+build jour-ney, to share their experi-ence in building a newhome with GrahamBuilders. In May we’llcheck in with the home-owners and report on the

construction process. The completed projectwill be unveiled in June,so don’t miss it!

HAWAIIRENOVATION

With more than 20 years ofexperience in Hawaii’sroofing and solar industry,

Surface Shield Roofing’s ShonGregory has seen the businesschange as materials and technolo-gies continue to adapt to the needsand priorities of property owners.

Because of our state’s dependenceon imported oil, energy costs inHawaii are the highest in the U.S.,and the need to reduce the price ofcooling a home or business has ledto innovations. “The marketdemands that we work with the lat-est materials and technologiesbecause our clients want to save ontheir energy costs over the longterm,” Gregory says.

In addition to traditional roofingmaterials such as shake, tile andshingles, Surface Shield works withcoating technology such as GacoSilS-20 and Tropical Silicone, solvent-free applications that come with aClass-A fire rating and retain theirultraviolet reflective quality overthe life of the coating.

“Cool roofing” is an approachthat has a variety of cost and envi-ronmental benefits, and the num-ber of home and business ownersadopting that approach is growingrapidly. Because such coatings areapplied to existing roofing sub-strate, demolition that sends wasteto a landfill is unnecessary.Buildings using cool-roof materialsand technologies can save up to 25

percent on energy costs.Surface Shield also is experienced

and 5-star certified in the installationof the Solaris cool roofing systemsby CertainTeed. The asphalt shingletechnology is solar reflective andcapable of reducing roof tempera-tures by up to 20 percent during

summer months in Hawaii. TheSolaris system meets LEED stan-dards, and meets EnergyStarrequirements for solar reflectivityand thermal emissivity. Moredurable than traditional roofingmaterials, the asphalt shinglesreduce “thermal shock,” or theexpansion of external building mate-rials because of heat.

With a keen understanding of thedynamic nature of the building indus-try in Hawaii, Surface Shield is help-ing home and business owners utilizeadvances in technology and materialsto control rising energy costs.

Credit unions originatedwith the concept of“people helping peo-

ple.” Today, that same “peoplefirst” philosophy is the basisof the quality of services pro-vided by Hawaii CentralFederal Credit Union (HCF-CU). With its members’ needsand satisfaction a priority,HCFCU continues to expandits services and products, which now include full-ser-

vice mortgage lending.Miles Kimhan heads the

mortgage lending arm ofHCFCU and has more than 20years of experience in the realestate industry. Kimhan andhis experienced staff bring awealth of knowledge in mort-gage lending and know thestresses and urgencies thatcome with getting the financ-ing needed when purchasing anew home or taking on a reno-

vation project. If you’ve been thinking

about remodeling your home, the first step is to find the mosteffective way to pay for it. Thisallows you to find out how bigof a renovation project you canafford and what financingoptions are available.

For those with built-up equi-ty in their homes, a HomeEquity Line Of Credit(HELOC) could be the best

option as rates are still rela-tively low. A Home EquityLine Of Credit is a revolvingline of credit, which gives theflexibility to use funds “asneeded,” similar to a creditcard. This allows payment ofinterest only when allottedfunds are used. As payment tothe principal is made, the cred-it line is replenished.

If you choose to open aHELOC, HCFCU generally can

get you approved and fundedin as little as two weeks so thatyour renovation project can bestarted promptly. This is justone of the many benefits ofgoing to HCFCU to meet yourfinancing needs. As a not-for-profit company, HCFCU hasless fees and is able to offermore flexible conditions, whereas most banks havetightened lending standardsand may take more than amonth to get the funds youneed.

Experience the credit uniondifference! For more informa-tion about HCFCU’s home loanproducts or to apply for aHELOC, call 529-4599 or visitits newly renovated officebuilding at 681 S. King St.
