Aloha Hawaii Yacht Club members and friends,I had someone tell me today that the Club had no Aloha. It was inspired by the loss of one of our well-liked employees. I miss that employee too. I miss a lot people who are gone from the yacht club. I miss Nick Naiyoke. I miss Wade and Sarah, who, one of our cruising and voyaging presenters ran into in the Marquesas. I miss George and Tuuli as they leave for their next adventure.

I’ve seen people quit, resign, and walk away. I have seen many people get frustrated or upset and leave. Some return. Some reconsider resigning and keep on working for the Club.

I have not seen a more diverse collection of people in one group in my life. We are all bound together by something. And we all have a different way of looking at things. We all have different ways of living. We come from different places. So it’s no surprise that we disagree about almost everything.

But we shouldn’t walk away. We should take a stand when we think we are right, and recognize when we are wrong. We should listen to each other because there’s more to it than just being right. We should understand. We should never give up.

In Hawaii people come and go all the time. That’s because we live in the middle of the Pacific Ocean surrounded by more than 2,000 miles of water in every direction. This is the only place to come for travelers in this part of the world. And then they continue on.

For the people who stay behind, we are bound together. We have Aloha. That’s what is living in us and that keeps us going here in the middle of the Pacific. For people who come here, we have Aloha. For people who leave here, we have Aloha.

The Hawaii Yacht Club has Aloha!

Dear Commodore Patti Naiyoke,We thank you for the genuine efforts you have put in this club to make positive changes. From the time you became our Vice Commodore in 2016, you were on a mission to bring back and include all of the members, young, old, children, family and friends. You made sure to include the member volunteers in all of your activities, as a way to make them feel part of the running of the club.

We were all so proud when you ran and won your seat as our Commodore. You took over the helm of the club with a vigorous spirit of determination. Your appointment of a strong and smart Finance Committee was a smart business move.

We thank you for reviving dormant committees. We appreciate your leadership in guiding the office staff. We especially acknowledge the not so popular decision to treat everyone fairly and according to our Bylaws and Standing Rules. Your guidance was heavy handed but legitimate and long coming.

As your last act as Commodore, proposing to reinstate the minimum requirement proved to be a popular decision with the members as was proven by the overwhelming vote to approve it.

We miss you and wish you a happy retirement from your Commodore duties.

Sincerely,

Your Supporters

Aloha Hawaii Yacht Club members and friends,I am sitting down to write this message after having completed a day of racing the Lipton Cup with our Rear Commodore of Sail Steven Eder and a crack crew consisting of Travis Scott, Rich Smith, Miguel Ahumada, Ron Simpson, and Lyn Silva. This traditional regatta pits one yacht with crew from each yacht club. The winner brings home the Lipton Cup and hosts next year’s challenge. Tomorrow’s outcome will determine which yacht club will bring home the Cup. My bet’s on Hawaii Yacht Club.

April also had the Rabbit Island race which was won by Rear Commodore of Sail Steven Eder on his boat Mayhem and the Senoritas Fishing Tournament along with celebrating Easter with a brunch at the yacht club all on the same weekend. Unfortunately, our chef moved on however member Jo Anne Washburn created a wonderful spread for those who came down for brunch. Linda West made sure the club was decorated beautifully and Ella filled Easter eggs with surprises and hid them everywhere. Later that Sunday those who participated in the Senorita’s Fishing Tournament Saturday were treated to a banquet comprised of their days catch treated with various recipes.

Looking Forward to May, we will be celebrating Seis De Mayo on the Saturday after Cinco De Mayo with Son Caribe presenting their salsa dance style. Please keep posted for the latest information about dinner for Seis De Mayo. We will also have a Mother’s Day Brunch May 14th 9:30 am until 1:30 pm. Again, please keep your eyes peeled for more details.

And so we march onward toward Transpac 2017. We will need many hands on deck to help with Transpac so please sign up with your favorite activity on the signup sheet at the Vice Commodore’s bulletin board. You can also stop by the office or use the signup sheet on our website at: http://hawaiiyachtclub.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/TransPac-volunteers-form2017-2.pdf.

Aloha! This Easter weekend, we had the 38th Annual Senorita’s Fishing Tournament. There were 11 boats entered. All boats caught fish.

The winning boats and Senoritas were:

1st Place: WHIPSAW –HYC member, Capt Don Hackman -angler Denise Hackman with a Marlin of 115.5 lbs

2nd Place: MARY K -Capt Nate Hasegawa -anglers Blaire Chapman and Krista Snow with a Spearfish of 41.5 lbs. Nate has applied for membership at HYC

3rd Place: MITCH’S –HYC member, Capt Craig Mitchell -angler Rosie with a 32.5 lbs Ahi.

The story of the day was aboard THE BLUE NUN TOO who hooked up at 9:20 A.M. to a huge Marlin which anglers Kimberly Stronger, Jennifer Rubianes & Janie Bullock fought for 8hrs 15mns before breaking line. They had the fish up to the boat many times but the ‘old lady of the sea’ proved to be too powerful for them.

After losing the big Marlin, they started their way home only to hook up again and land a 275 lbs Marlin. Unfortunately, the tournament was over and the fish didn’t qualify.

What a day for Bob McCowan and his Senoritas.

The banquet on Sunday proved to be again, awesome. Thanks to Craig Mitchell of Mitch’s Sushi for donating all of the Hamachi for the sashimi & poke. Thanks to Chef Steve Hessenflow for the tacos, chili, home made beans, kalua pork and all of the trimmings. Thanks to Weigh Masters and Fish Cutters Tommy Sullivan and Roger Takabayashi. Roger also set up the scales and did the clean up. Thank you to another weigh master, Carl Geringer, Robbie Buck and Mike Niebuhr for catching the lines when boats came in for the weigh-in.

Thanks to Linda West and Thea Koshman for the all around help with putting on this event.

And finally, a big mahalo to ‘Money Box’ George Machado for manning the radio from dawn to dusk.

Aloha,

Al Bento RC Power

A special thank you to Randy and Adriana Hale of Lost Elvis for donating a new compound miter saw to replace the one in the Club shop. The old one will be given to Junior Sailing so they can sell it. Cruising & Voyaging• Bill De Rego

By: Marybeth Purvis

Aloha Cruisers,Aloha Cruisers,

Darren and Jodie Craig were the guest speakers at our monthly Presentation and Potluck evening on April 4th. They shared some great stories and photos of their voyage aboard their vessel Gratatouille while visiting El Tigre Island, off Honduras on the Pacific Coast, and El Salvador.

You may remember Michiaki Koga, who was one of our guest speakers last year. Well, he has returned and shared his cruising book with us. While it is all in Japanese, the photos are abundant and beautiful about his voyage from Japan to San Francisco, returning to Japan via Hawaii. Hope you had an opportunity to review it.

Please join us for our monthly Presentation and Potluck on Tuesday, May 2nd, 6:30 p.m., downstairs at the HYC. Also, we hope to have our regular Sunday Brunch May 21st, upstairs at Galley of the Sea. More details to follow.

Our Fleet Captain, Bill DeRego, will be in Mystic, CT, for his nephew’s wedding and will also be visiting his brother in New Hampshire during the second half of May. He will, therefore, miss Sunday brunch and the Memorial Day weekend. We will miss you, Bill, but have lots of fun!

Hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Please share your cruising stories with us.

Happy Cruising,

Membership• Nikki DeHeart and Thea Koshman

There is considerable discussion on the issue of membership. Understanding the processes and the needs of our club is important to all in our membership and to the health of the Hawaii Yacht Club.

For membership to thrive and build, there are topics that are significant to the survival of our Hawaii Yacht Club, and just as important for the membership to be aware of.

These topics are Volunteerism and Engagement.

“Keeping pace with membership trends is about the website and is the value of our community. Our website builds the relationship and encourages action with every website visit and ensures you’re providing tangible member value.” (Smart Thoughts, 2017)

The website of our club is a vital component to our organization. It is our “calling card” to attract membership. Our Marketing committee, headed by Carolyn Majewski, is consistently updating the website to ensure “exposure” of our Hawaii Yacht Club and the value of a Membership.

This brings Us to the topic of Volunteerism. “Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in

democracy. You vote in elections every year, but when you are a volunteer you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in.” (Unknown)

Recent research findings have indicated a “changing nature of membership” in identifying the advantages that steer membership and “engagement”. It is important to recognize the “shifts in member behavior” as we coordinate our efforts to the future of the Hawaii Yacht Club membership. For anyone to understand these behaviors we need to examine the different types of generations and how do we appeal to their “nature” in promotion of our membership.

• Greatest Generation are the people that fought and died in World War II for our freedom.

• Baby Boomers began when the Greatest Generation got home and the advent of the Pill, and we all know what happened next. ;)

• Generation X has a timeframe of 1965 to 1984.

• Generation Y is a made-up generation, so don’t worry about this.

• Millennials called “the next generation”, and born between the years 1982-2004.

May 2017

This leads to generations of the Millennials and Generation X. These are the target populations that we need to direct OUR focus for membership and volunteers. There are three (3) new trends that drives volunteerism.

1. Micro volunteering: having a great number of volunteer who each do what they do best, coordinated, has much more of an impact. “Nobody can do everything, yet everyone can do something. “

2. Millennials are motivated by variety. They will vary their volunteer time.

3. The volunteer process must be personalized. It is important to appeal to individual interests, career and life phases.

In our general membership meeting on April 18, 2017, there was focused discussion on the Bylaws, Membership, Marketing, and Volunteers. It can be agreed that these are also committees in dire need of participation. Here are some opportunities. (smile), thus the gest of this discussion.

A question to you, the Membership:

If membership is fundamental to the function

of our Hawaii Yacht Club, and our website is the picture that portrays our community, what is our value? Everyone at the meeting agrees that membership is a “priority” …...Where are you in volunteering, donating time, offering ideas and engaging with the Hawaii Yacht Club through participation?

Me Ke Aloha Pumehana (with warm regards),

Nikki DeHeart and Thea Koshman

Membership Committee [email protected]

P.S. Did you know that “Membership Drive” is ongoing? Greet a newcomer, or people frequenting our club, and ask them, “Can I help you and would you be interested in a membership to our Hawaii Yacht Club?” Thank you for coming. (and smile)

Ships Store• Blaire Chapman and Laurel Chapman

It has been a wonderful few months at the Hawaii Yacht Club. Sailing and fishing tournaments, parties, and Transpac is just around the corner. As we gear up for re-merchandising the ships store, we are excited to introduce new modern styles as well as old favorites to our inventory. With the anticipation of Transpac drawing near, we are excited to introduce two of the HYC Transpac logo designs for this years event at the end of May. We are very proud of the designs for this year’s event. In an effort to move merchandise, the Ships Store is having a MAY SALE: 50% off all HYC shirts…

Stop by and check out the sale!

Aloha!

We are presently in the process of reviewing various Club repair and maintenance issues that need to be addressed, and categorizing and prioritizing these projects to get the most out of our volunteers time and capabilities. The Hawaii Yacht Club Maritime Foundation met with Roger Takabayashi on the Finance committee and they are going to try and organize a fund-raiser where tax-deductible contributions could be made to the Foundation, and then matched dollar for dollar by the Foundation up to a specified level. These funds would be utilized to help support projects aligned with all of our sailing, fishing, philanthropic activities at the Club. More to follow on this later.

Aloha,

You Will Be Missed

We are losing two of our most giving volunteers. Paul Moore and Bonnie Wagner are leaving for an extended cruise to the South Pacific in the middle of May.

Paul and Bonnie have contributed so much to the betterment of the club, always willing to give not only of their time but also equipment and material to help the club with projects and activities.

Paul first joined us more than ten years ago, when he helped the HYC office as an IT guy. He came back a few years ago with beautiful Bonnie. Together, they have helped foster friendship among members of the HYC ‘ohana, including the shy ones. No matter what age or walk of life, they made friends with everyone.

I enjoyed the Sunday “Shop Seminar” that Paul would convene on any topic pertaining to boats, shipwright, installing electrical lines, and so on. He was always patient with his students.

Bonnie, our wonderfully opinionated (I mean this in a good way) recording secretary, would often break the atmosphere during our meetings with her anecdotes or “on the other hand” opinions. She was a valuable addition to our GM meetings, too. We all listened when she talked.

Paul was responsible for finding donated equipment and purchasing equipment and tools for our workshop. He built tables and other necessities to keep the shop safe and clean. (Please remember that this is our shop, and to keep it as Paul did.)

Paul also designed a flyer for a membership drive. To increase revenue for the club, he brought to everyone’s attention that we should look more closely at our fee structure.

Bonnie was an excellent last-minute volunteer. I know that retired Commodore Patti Naiyoke greatly appreciated her.

Paul and Bonnie never expected anything in return—except, for Paul, maybe just one request: keep all of the shop equipment in good condition, so that all members can use safe and reliable tools. These are my words, not Paul’s, but I’m pretty sure I know how he feels about that. Bonnie, I’m sure, would ask only that we keep smiling and be kind to each other.

I will miss Paul and Bonnie—their boundless energy and, especially, Bonnie’s smile and giggles.

Aloha ‘oe, Paul and Bonnie. Safe travels.
