very day, we hear and read in the media aboutbreakthroughs that improve and extend the lifeof individuals grappling with unusual and

commonplace medical conditions alike. Forinstance, cardiac catheterization equipment can sparepeople from having heart attacks. And high-tech imagingequipment can detect a wide variety of cancers at theirearliest stages, when they are most treatable.

Many medical advances have gradually becomecommonplace, so we tend to take for granted that they willbe available to us when we need them. They are, however,dependent upon our health care providers’ access tospecific, up-to-date medical technology.

“As a community hospital, Citrus Valley MedicalCenter is committed to providing the residents of the EastSan Gabriel Valley with the vital medical resources theyneed to live healthy lives,” says Jim Yoshioka, president andCEO of Citrus Valley Health Partners. “But as a nonprofithospital, keeping up with rapid advancements and costlymedical technology is often a financial challenge. That’swhy fund raising is an important part of our mission tomeet the changing health care needs of our community.”

Ensuring that Citrus Valley Medical Center’sInter-Community and Queen of the Valley campuses havethe funding to obtain these crucial pieces of equipment isone of the Foundation’s primary objectives, and one of itsbiggest challenges.

“Our reimbursement from the federal and stategovernments is not increasing as much as expenses aregoing up for wages, pharmaceuticals and new technology,”notes Elvia Foulke, executive vice president and chiefoperating officer of Citrus Valley Health Partners.“Therefore, we need donations to help cover costs andcapital expenditures.”

catches the eye of reporters and medical-show writers,equally important but unnoticed equipment quietly supportsit in the background, such as stretchers, defibrillators andcomputers. And serving a patient population of close to amillion in the East San Gabriel Valley, our technology isconstantly in use.

For example, the Medical Center’s Imaging ServicesDepartment relies on computers that provide imagingequipment with additional storage space for crucial patientinformation. Of the three units that it currently has, two areat the end of their useful life, and the other is not farbehind. The cost to replace each of these units: $190,000.

A s I reflect on the year that is passing and preparefor the one that lies ahead, I find myself thinkingabout the Citrus Valley Health Partners “family”:

employees, physicians, donors, support group members andvolunteers. Working as one yet bringing their own uniqueskills and perspectives to the mix, they help ensure both thepresent and future of CVHP. Each branch of our familyinteracts so seamlessly with the others that we seldom giveour interdependence a second thought. We simply focus onour common goal: delivering the highest quality health careto our community.

I want to take the opportunity presented by theholiday season to highlight the community aspect of our family and acknowledge thededication, time and resources that its members so selflessly give.

Our Board of Trustees is deeply rooted in the neighborhoods we serve, and continuesto provide outstanding leadership for our fund-raising efforts. In addition to our cherishedindividual donors, our support groups—the Inter-Community Auxiliary, Melisse WittlerSociety, 2100 Club, Men’s Club and Friends of Citrus Valley Hospice—are some of thegreat moving forces that sustain our efforts. They are among our staunchest supporters asthey create new and exciting ways to bring visibility to their causes, and to Citrus Valley.Their passion and commitment are at the heart of their success in helping to fund thehealth resources that our community so depends on.

We are all very fortunate to be able to help shape Citrus Valley Medical Center’s futurethrough our contributions of time, experience, and yes, our resources. Our facilities aboundwith naming opportunities, including buildings, wings, departments, floors, patient-careunits, reception areas and conference rooms. and the summer and fall of2005 saw plenty of them. On June 13,beautiful South Hills Country Clubwas the site of the Foundation’sAnnual Golf Tournament, whichraised an impressive $188,000.Another popular Men’s Club event, theSteak Fry, held Sept. 15 at the homeof Nancy Russell, brought in morethan $10,000 for the ECHO/KidsKare Program. Also held that day wasthe 2100 Club Luncheon in Queenof the Valley’s Oakwood Room. 2100Club members donated more than$15,000 during 2005.

Indian summer provided theperfect weather for DonorCelebration 2005, held in the Vinceand Helen Capitano Garden at theQueen of the Valley campus. Donorsand their guests enjoyed a cocktailparty, witnessed the unveiling of theplasma screen displaying the names ofFounder, Benefactor, Patron, andSponsor-level donors (an identicalscreen is in the main lobby at theInter-Community campus), andreceived tokens of the Foundation’sappreciation for their support.

Autumn NocturneRaises $102,000 for CVHF

T he 2005 Autumn Nocturne, held Nov.12 at the Pasadena Hilton, raised$102,000 in support of Citrus Valley Health Foundation activities andhonored the Inter-Community Campus Auxiliary for its important work at

the hospital throughout the years. The gala event, which highlighted the fallseason, featured entertainment by Live Wire, a large and varied silent auction,and an exciting live auction conducted by guest auctioneerGalen Metz,owner of AzoGalleries inCovina.

is used for life-saving surgeries currently performed in theCardiac Catheterization Laboratory, as well as for moreadvanced procedures that cardiologists would like to beable to perform at Citrus Valley. The equipment itcurrently has is no longer manufactured, which means thatreplacement parts are becoming harder to find. If parts areunavailable then the X-ray equipment goes down, andprocedures have to be rescheduled. The cost to replace justone of these C-Arm units is $190,000.

The needs of the Medical Center are many and costly.For instance, among the items on the CardiologyDepartment’s “wish list” are a new electrocardiograph, orEKG, machine ($24,000) and technology for cardiacimaging and information storage ($300,000). We all knowhow important it is to have enough blood on hand forscheduled procedures, medical emergencies and widespreaddisasters; the Blood Bank requires an analyzer that costs$125,000. Even a humble—yet specialized—treadmill forNuclear Medicine to perform key diagnostic tests costs$25,000.

You can see how quickly the cost mounts up. And thisis just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to capitalequipment needs at Citrus Valley Medical Center. Theseare not exotic technologies; they are found at hospitals theworld over. To ensure that they are available to you, yourfriends and neighbors, please make 2006 the year that youmake a difference and help the Foundation meet these vitalmedical needs.
