This is an update of his previous works. He still also has copies of his Phragmipedium book and one on Darwin, so let me know if you are interested in those as well. Will have final cost soon. The President’s Corner

Hello everyone.

As I write this, KOS has just completed our first

auction of 2021, which was a great success!

Multiple members participated, all of whom seemed

to have had a great time, and the society made a

nice profit, most of which will go toward speakers

fees. Many thanks to all those who helped organize

this event, those who donated plants, and all those

who joined in the fun and spent a few dollars on a

new orchid. There were some great buys and some

spirited bidding! I’m sure we will do this again in a

few months, particularly if we are still in lockdown

mode. Be sure not to miss it!

We have had some interesting presentations

recently through our society and our sister societies.

I will continue to send you information about

upcoming events as I receive it. Doug Martin’s

presentation this month on growing hardy orchids in

your garden should be a good follow up to Jeanne

Rinehart’s outstanding presentation on native

orchids last month.

The Miami Valley Orchid Society is planning to

place a bulk order for two new orchid publications.

We can order through them and will get a better

price as a group than we would otherwise. If you

are interested, send an e-mail to Eric at

[email protected]. Here is the

information on the publications, from Eric Sauer

(president of MVOS):

The first book is on Paphiopedilum by Guido

Braem- This is a new volume of all the Paph

species- It is at the publisher now and will

be ready soon- A copy of the cover is

attached. This is an update of his previous

works. He still also has copies of his

Phragmipedium book and one on Darwin, so

let me know if you are interested in those as

well. Will have final cost soon. More

information on his other books can be found

here: Product List (braembooks.com)

The Second book is co-authored by David

Haelterman from Columbia. This is a work

on native Colombian Orchids. He is able to

get a significant discount off the bookstore

price for us and the price will be $125 plus a

small amount for shipping. David was here

this past February as one of our featured

speakers at the Mid America and will also be

joining us again via Zoom in May! He sent

me several images from the book and the

Photography is quite nice- It is a listing of

the orchid species from the National Park

outside of Cali- The book includes 100

genera and 310 pictured species. It is in

Spanish. It also contains a checklist of 430

species from the area. The nice part is

orchid names are universal, so it doesn’t

matter what language the book is in!

Our orders from Roberts Flower Supply will be

reaching Dayton on the weekend of March 13 and

we will get our orders to Louisville as soon as

possible thereafter. More information will be

available at the upcoming March meeting.

The supplies should be just in time for our spring

re-potting activities. I know each of you must be as

anxious as I am to see some spring sun! It should

remind us that our orchids will soon get back to

active growing and we need to make some changes

in our orchid care routine. Be sure to go to our

website and learn what you should be doing during

March to prepare your plants for spring:

Thanks to Dick Humke who sent me information on

an interesting short video on Emerald orchid bees

and their relationship with a mormodes orchid in

Mexico. Copy/paste this link and enjoy learning

more about orchids and how they benefit the bees

who pollinate them. (No, it is not by providing

nectar in this symbiotic relationship!).

The Vice President’s Corner

Greetings from the Vice President:

No matter what the groundhog said, I’m looking

forward to Spring arriving very soon! Although

you wouldn’t know it as I write this (it’s a balmy 6

degrees!) I know that Spring is actually on the way.

With that in mind, our speaker for the upcoming

meeting is Doug Martin and his topic is “Growing

Hardy Orchids in your home Garden”. I have

always wanted hardy orchids in my garden and have

been afraid to invest in them because they are

traditionally considered hard to grow and they can

also be pretty expensive plants. But, in reality, like

all plants, hardy orchids will grow well if provided

with the conditions to which that are adapted in the

wild. Doug has grown and studies hardy orchids for

25 years. He is going to discuss what he has

learned about the conditions that hardy orchids need

to grow well and describe the methods you need to

use to provide those conditions. He will share

details of how to grow some of the more commonly

available hardy orchids including cypripediums (the

hardy lady slipper) which many consider the most

desirable of the group. I think many of you know

Doug as he has presented to our group in the past

but just in case you don’t remember him, here is his

biographical information.

Doug lives in a suburb of Kansas City with his wife

and fellow orchid lover, Beth. He started growing

orchids in 1991. He grows a mixed collection of

about 200 tropical orchids in a basement light room.

He also grows about 40-50 species and hybrids of

Cypripediums and other hardy orchids in his

outdoor growing area and 50+ species of winter

green Mediterranean orchids under lights in his

garage.

Doug has published articles on growing

Cypripediums in the Slipper Orchid Alliance

Journal and the North American Native Orchid

Journal. He is a student AOS judge and also serves

as Treasurer of the Slipper Orchid Alliance. He has

been the President of the Orchid Society of Greater

Kansas City and the Mid-America Orchid Congress

and previously served as chairman of the Mid-

America Conservation Committee for seven years.

Doug has a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry. Before

retiring in 2016 from teaching chemistry at Penn

Valley Community College in Kansas City,

Missouri he worked in biomedical research and ran

an orchid lab.

I’m really looking forward to Doug’s presentation.

I, for one, can’t wait to get into my garden and start

planting hardy orchids! I hope to see you all at the

meeting on March 10th

.
