Have you ever been the victim of a Non-profit Board: Either member or supporting staff?

description

images Boards have been the subjects of much conversation lately. A close fiend working on an agency that funds & supports not-for-profits told me that Board/Executive Director relationships are at an all time low. Simultaneously I am hearing from more and more people who are disappointed with their involvement as Board members. Why?

More and more people serving on Boards are disappointed with their involvement.

Legislation have raised the legal & fiduciary responsibilities of Boards and individual Directors.

Therefore, those considering joining a Board are taking that role seriously:

It is the law!

Charities want to recruiting high-potential members.

The very nature of those people causes them to question and make demands.

This often rubs the staff person the wrong way.

The CEO/ED is in fact the Board’s employee. YES … Employee!

Boards and CEO/ED’s are not truly aware of that this means there is an employee/employer relationship.

Somebody has to be the Boss

The ED/CEO is the founder or ‘heart’ of the organization so when the Board asks questions or challenges things become personal

The Board must understand that they are the ED/CEO’s boss and must act as such.

Boards have, sometimes, treated the ED/CEO is a manner that would never fly in the Board Members place of employment.

If you want to be the Boss, be a good boss
