Stocks Gain on Earnings Surprises;
Dollar Declines: Markets Wrap: -
U.S. equities advanced as higher-than-
forecast results from IBM, Procter &
Gamble and United Technologies helped
ease mounting concern over economic
growth, trade talks and the government
shutdown. Treasury bond yields rose
and the dollar’s six-day rally stalled.
Dollar near three-week high as
central banks eyed: - The dollar held
near a three-week high on Wednesday
after the Bank of Japan left monetary
policy unchanged, boosting risk appetite
and sending the yen lower. With Tokyo
sounding a cautious note on the outlook
for global growth, attention shifted to
the European Central Bank, which meets
on Thursday. Markets expect it to
acknowledge growing threats to the euro
zone economy.
Gold Prices Drop as Risk Appetite
Returns: - Gold prices dropped on
Wednesday as investors opted to rotate
out of the safe-haven asset in favor of
stocks after a handful of Dow
components reported better-than-
expected quarterly earnings.
Russian oil output edges up to 11.39
million bpd during January 1-22:
source: - Russia slightly increased its
oil production to 11.39 million barrels
per day (bpd) on average between Jan.
1 and Jan 22, a source familiar with the
Energy Ministry data told Reuters on
Wednesday. Russian oil output averaged
11.38 million bpd between Jan. 1-10.
Under a global oil supply cut deal,
Russia agreed to cut its oil production
from the 11.41 million bpd it pumped in
October. The Energy Ministry did not
immediately reply to a Reuters request
for a comment.
