Fingerprints Frances Galton and the Evolution of Fingerprinting

Due to the failure of the anthropometry method in

the William West case the fingerprinting system sup-

ported by Frances Galton became the preferred meth-

od of criminal identification. His choice method, the

Henry Method, was supported by statistical proof in

his 1892 book Finger Prints.

Galton established a methodology for classifying the

prints and a database for their filing. His work was the

basis for all of the fingerprint work done today.
