ruled by a raja, or chieftain. Much as their western counterparts, these local rulers sought to

protect their lands by building elaborate defensive positions and famous fortresses. These

legendary fortifications and structures of India saw many fierce battles over the centuries.

An oft-repeated part of these legends is that the spirits of many fierce warriors still roam the

land, unwilling to admit defeat. Many visitors come to explore these supposedly haunted

areas, asking if the spirits and ghosts are still fighting those battles and serving their rajas?

was the residence of a great Mughal general. The area was only occupied for a few years,

however. It seems the grandson of the general added on to the palace until its height cast a

shadow over a forbidden area. A magician cursed the entire city, and it was soon attacked,

destroyed and abandoned.

With all the reported supernatural happenings, no one is willing to remain in the city over night.

The government’s Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) actually put up a sign prohibiting

people from staying in the city after sunset.

Gujarat, Dumas Beach

The site of Hindu burial ceremonies for centuries, thousands of bodies, including fallen

warriors, have been burned on the beach. Visitors report unending whisperings of legions of

spirits and a wide variety of paranormal activities. There are even reports of tourists

disappearing after daring to venture onto the beach at night.

Kurseong, West Bengal, Dow Hill

An area that was formerly heavily forested, Dow Hill was the scene of several battles and

supposedly a number of murders. Woodcutters often report sighting of a headless boy

wandering through the trees, and the local Victoria Boys School is the scene of many sightings

of specters.

Local legend tells of a young prince assassinated in this fort when he turned 13. Visitors come

at full moons to catch a glimpse of his ghost, wandering through the rooms of the palace and

shrieking over his lost kingdom.

Today a popular hotel for those seeking a paranormal experience, the Brij Raj Bhavan Palace

is 178 years old and the former home of the royal Kota family. The residence seems to boast

its own resident ghost, that of a former resident, Major Burton. This British official, along with

his two sons, was killed during the Mutiny of 1857 by a group of Indian sepoys.

Sightings report the Major wandering about the palace, with his cane in hand, from the

drawing room where he was murdered. No one has every reported any harmful actions by the

Major, although he is reported to strike guards with his cane if he comes across them sleeping

while on duty at night.
