A CELEBRATIONwith Women for Women International

International Women’s Day8th March 2010

Page 2: Haunch of Venison catalogue- March 8 2010

Dear Friends,

I am so sorry I cannot be with you at this wonderful celebration on International Women’s Day but on behalf of everyone at Women for Women International, I take great pleasure in welcoming you to this very special event.

On this March 8th, 2010 the centennial anniversary of International Women’s Day, I am proud to announce that thousands of women in New York, Sarajevo, London and many other cities are standing together to honor the resilience of millions of women survivors of war around the world as part of Women for Women International’s global campaign, Join Me on the Bridge. Because the women of Rwanda and Congo are not alone.

If these women can stand up to make a difference, so can the rest of us. We can demand attention to this issue; we can demand governments no longer ignore the suffering of women nor their voices and their crucial role in repairing their countries after war. We can unite to help other wives, mothers and sisters all over the globe whose daily existence is a challenge.

May we long continue to build the bridges that will lead to a just and peaceful tomorrow.

In Peace,

Zainab SalbiFounder and CEO of Women for Women InternationalFRONT COVER: SYLVIA PLACHY

SINCE WORLD WAR II, THERE HAVE BEEN OVER 260 MAJOR CONFLICTS RESULTING IN OVER 24 MILLION ACKNOWLEDGED CASUALTIES. WHEN IT COMES TO CASUALTIES OF WAR, IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 90% ARE INNOCENT CIVILIANS, 75% OF WHOM ARE WOMEN AND CHILDREN. IF WE ARE TO UNDERSTAND WAR FULLY, WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND NOT ONLY WHAT HAPPENS ON THE FRONT LINES, BUT WHAT HAPPENS ON THE BACK LINES AS WELL, WHERE WOMEN ARE IN CHARGE OF KEEPING LIFE GOING. TOO OFTEN, THE STRATEGY OF RAPE AND MUTILATION HAS BEEN USED BY WARRING FACTIONS TO WIPE OUT AND DISEMPOWER PEOPLE – AS IS THE CASE IN BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA, RWANDA, SUDAN AND THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO. ON THIS NIGHT, ACROSS THE WORLD, HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF WOMEN CONTINUE TO LIVE WITH THE PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY DEBILITATING WOUNDS OF WAR AND LOSS OF LOVED ONES TO A BULLET OR A MACHETE. FROM FACING STARVATION AND SOCIAL EXCLUSION TO BATTLING SUICIDE, THEY MUST OVERCOME HARDSHIPS THAT FEW OF US CAN FATHOM. WOMEN FOR WOMEN INTERNATIONAL BELIEVES THAT HELPING WOMEN ESTABLISH THE MEANS TO EARN A SUSTAINABLE LIVING CAN HELP THEM TRANSFORM THEIR LIVES, THEIR PROSPECTS AND THEIR IMMEDIATE SURROUNDINGS. WITH THIS HELP WOMEN CAN SUPPORT THEIR FAMILIES AND COMMUNITIES, WHILST REGAINING THEIR SENSE OF WORTH AND DIGNITY.

DANCEWOMEN FOR WOMEN INTERNATIONAL PRESENTS...A CELEBRATION IN DANCE WITH PERFORMANCE FROM ....

Page 26: Haunch of Venison catalogue- March 8 2010

SUFI DANCING PERFORMED BY EDA ASCOTT AND AYSEGUL ONAT, ACCOMPANIED BY MAGGIE CURRIE ON THE NEY

The whirling dervish dance originated in Konya, Turkey. The whirling dervish is known as a Semazen. Dervish itself means doorway to god or enlightenment. Whirling dervishes sport a conical hat and a white shirt and skirt. The skirt is made of billowing material that flows out and around the dancer as they spin. The headgear symbolizes the need to seal off one’s ego in order to connect to god and the universe. The skirt represents a shroud but also the sky, which is revealed as the dancer removes their black cloak and begins the journey towards spiritual enlightenment

Female Sufi dancers are very rare, and we are privileged to have two of the very few female experts in this field tonight

Page 27: Haunch of Venison catalogue- March 8 2010

LA VIALLA is the largest organic farm in Tuscany with 3,300 Acres, began, unplanned, in 1978 when our parents, Piero and Giuliana, bought their first house in the countryside, abandoned after the second world war. Slowly, they put neglected olive trees, vines and pastures back into working condition using only natural methods, adopted a wandering flock of sheep, and restored a network of farmhouses. This passion spread throughout the family, and now, the three Lo Franco brothers, Gianni, Antonio and Bandino, manage daily operations at the farm

The farm is self-sufficient in energy, plants and animals, with produce hand-picked at the moment of prime natural ripeness. About 1,300 sheep roam the estate, providing milk to make pecorino cheese, and even the solar panels used to capture the heat of the sun are landscaped so that they cannot intrude on the view
