IroquoisThe Iroquois are Aboriginal people who lived in the forests of the Northeast.

Iroquois• The name " Iroquois " means " People of the

Longhouse . " • The Iroquois Six Nations are actually combined

together.

The 5 original nations were the Mohawk, Oneida , Onondaga, Seneca and Cayuga . Later the Tuscarora have joined .

Who are the Iroquois ?

• Iroquois women played a very important role in Indian culture . The Iroquois tribes are divided into three clans : bear, turtle and wolf. These tribes were all headed by a Clan Mother .

Lineage passed down through the female line meaning the social structure is determined by the woman's family line. All the Iroquois land also belonged to women.

Clothing• Their clothes were made of

deerskin.

• Wampum beads are made from shells that are woven into belts.

• Most Iroquois men wore their hair in a Mohawk.

• The women wore their hair in braids.

• The Hiawatha wampum belt is comprised of 38 rows.

• A heart or a big tree is found in the center. On each side of the shaft are two squares, all connected to the core by white rows wampum.

• The belt is the emblem of unity between Five Nations.

THE FOOD

• The Iroquois were farmers.

• "The Three Sisters" was the most important crops.

• Three Sisters is the name they gave the beans, corn, and squash.

• They also hunted and went fishing.

• In the spring they were collecting maple sap to make syrup .

Villages• The Iroquois built their villages near rivers.

• The villages were surrounded by palisades .

• Palisades fences are used as protection.

• The warriors protected the villages.

Habitations• The Iroquois lived in long houses.

• They are long and narrow dwellings that housed several families of the same clan.

• Longhouses are divided into two by a long corridor.

• There were 2 floors for each family. The top was for storage while they lived down.

Habitation• Longhouse was about 100 feet long and 20 feet

wide.

• When the Iroquois married, the husband moved in the longhouse of his wife and children became part of his clan.

Government• Aboriginal groups also had a government.

• The Iroquois formed the League of Nations to discuss their needs and to make important decisions together.

• The League of Nations is known as the Iroquois Confederacy.

• The Iroquois Confederacy - the government joined the six Iroquois nations .

• Each nation had a specific number of seats in the League of Nations.

• Women of every tribe chose men to become members of the Iroquois Confederacy.

The Iroquois Confederacy

• Each tribe was autonomous in their government.• Important decisions for the welfare of the nation, about

the war or trafficking was done by the Confederacy. • The Iroquois were a united people. • By being united, the Iroquois have won several batttles

against other tribes as well as against European forces.

LAW of the LAND• The Iroquois had to only keep the peace with one

another.  

• The law was called the Iroquois Kainerekowa- meaning .
