The Playbill of Stockton Civic Theatre

2009–2010 Season

THE RED HAT SOCIETY is a network of women from all walks of life dedicated to showing the world that there is fun after fifty. Its mission is to gain higher visibil-ity for women and to reshape the way they are viewed by today’s culture. The Red Hat Society currently has more than 40,000 chapters in all 50 states, and more than 30 countries, creating a world-wide sisterhood intent on touching and enriching the lives of its members. Becoming a member of The Red Hat Society is fun, fast and easy. For more information on the Red Hat Society, visit www.redhatsociety.com. Members can also sign up for Purple Perks to receive discounts to over 50,000 ven-ues across North America A Musical Revue, Hats! is the type of show where spunk and spirit rule over deep epiphanies or convincing characterizations. A patchwork of pop from a pletho-ra of songwriters, the numbers here revolve around themes associated with women growing older, acknowledging the challenges while always accentuating a sense of victory. Inspired by stories, experiences and mission of the Red Hat Society, Hats! is about a 49.999-year-old woman who reluctantly faces the inevitable BIG-FIVE-OH until she meets several remarkable women who teach her about fun, friendship and forgetting about things that simply don’t matter any more.

W elcome to the musical called Hats!, inspired by the Red Hat Society. A funny and poignant look at the

phenomenon that is the Red Hat Society, it affirms women 50 and older, in other words “Life Begins at 50!” The show presents a revealing look at various problems women face as they get older, all told with honesty and lots of humor. Empty-Nest Syndrome, Sexual Libido, Mother-Daughter Relationships, and Widowhood, among others, are addressed through a series of vignettes and songs written by a myriad of pop, country-western, and theatre composers. With this production, Bobbie Wallinger makes her directorial debut in the regular SCT Season, although she has previously directed shows for the Developmentally Disabled through collaboration with the theatre and cooperation with many local associations and SUSD School for Adults. Mark your calendars! Our Shrimp Feed Fundraiser is going to happen on April 17. After last year’s huge success, we are doing it again. The Abba tribute band “Waterloo” will be with us again this year. It was great fun. The food was fabulous, and the dance floor was wall to wall with folks, from the youngest at 8 years old, to the oldest at 85. The music is vintage Abba and makes this an event that you really don’t want to miss. You can call our Box Office and make your reservations. The tickets are $45.00 each. A real bargain. See you there!

The Economics of Community TheatreOne might assume that with nearly all seats filled at every performance, a not-for-profit theatre would have plenty of money.

Unfortunately, the revenue from tickets covers only about 40% of the theatre’s total expenses. And, without the generosity of the many volunteers who donate their time and talent—from the actors and set builders to the ushers and stage crews—it would not even cover that.

For other needs, we must reach out to the community for funding of operating expenses such as insurance, building maintenance, office supplies and postage; as well as the many educational and cultural programs we offer beyond our main stage. If we are to continue to offer this expanded program of theatre arts, we must turn to you.
