FAL L BRIEFS300 TO A.M .P . ORIGINAL

This afternoon, as Bruce Ferrall preparesfor his 300th game of football with the A .M.P.Society, players, past and present, club sup-porters and friends will come together at Oval10 .as- a sincere gesture of appreciation of 18years' dedication by this club immortal .

Bruce, affectionately known as "Ferret", hasplayed in most positions throughout his career. It is fair to say he will never become a recog-nised ruckman, but equally it must be said thatin his heyday as a rover he had no peer. Noother player in the history of this Club hasbeen able' to clear the ball from the centrewith the same consistency as "Ferret" andthere have tieen- few to match his ability toabsorb punishment .

Since ptaying in the Club's inaugural matchin 1961, Bruce has amassed 300 out of apossible 316 . He has played in 217 seniormatches and 83 ; reserve games and along theway has collected 2 senior and 2 reserve Bestand Fairest awards as well as 2 senior goal-kicking trophies, 'and he is only Thirty-five !

Presently Bruce is Reserve team captain,Club "y3ce President and a Life Member.Paralieied with his playing career has been acontinuing interest in club administration . Assuch his hours of dedication extend well intomany a winter evening . For this the Club saysthanks to him and his equally dedicated wifeLyn.

To' its "number one son", the Club says ahumble thank you for your dedication off thefield and the pleasure you have given us allon the field .

Best of luck for today and the remainder of,your distinguished caregr : ,

Ray King, St . Bernard's vice-captain, todayplays his 150th game . Ray is a most deter-mined player, having won this award four timesin his career . He started with the club in 1970and has held down many positions with dis-tinction, especially on the back line . Hisachievements include playing in 1975°A Gradepremiership side' and State representatiori, in1977-78 . All at St. Bernard's wish you, well,Ray, and hope to 'see you make it to 200 . One hundred games at the Melbourne, Uni-versity Blues is an unusual event. C1ub rulesstate that a player must be a student or postgraduate . However, a well-ear'ned pat on theback goes to Graeme Pleydell on reaching thismilestone in his career . He started his footballwith the "Blues" in 1971 with the Junior 2side . The next season he was part of the 1972Junior 2 premiership and since has repre-sented the club both in Senior and Reservematches. Off the field he has been a Com-mitteeman and assists with pre-season teampreparation . Graeme can't get very far from, football even when-he, is-off-the field . For teioyears he was with the Junior Football Council, and Is at present Promotions Officer with theEssendon Football Club. However, . all of histime is not-taken up`with football and we were

In each of the four other senior,« ;ions, the ladder leader has dropped only one game - University Blues (_A) ;St . =•=i'.da C.B.C.O .C. (C); Old Camberwell (D) and St. Bede's (B). Joint JuniorT «o icaders, Old Haileyburians and De La Salle have also only lost one matchapiece.

po i r, t - . and so take a two game lead .1 I ,~ Blues led for most of the day, but

had to withstand a spirited attack fromScotch in the final term .

Ormond proved that they are still.r force with a big win over St . Bernard's .Orn :ond are now fifth only a gameb-hind De La Salle and Ivanhoe.

De La Salle led Ivanhoe by thirty-< c cen points at the last change and musth~r ve been counting the points . How-c % er they could only manage threebehinds against Ivanhoe's seven goalsone in the final term. This accuracy>a':a Ivanhoe emerge to take the fourpoints by three. (and so thwart Ormond) .

North Old Boys also consolidatedtheir position only one game out withan "all-day" win over Marcellin whoonce again must be having relegationnightmares . These horrors were notdulled any by Univ . Blacks two goalv. in over Caulfield . To add to the an-- uish, however, the Blacks and Marcellinare still only two games out of the four(Good luck Michael Arnold!! )

Collegians re-estab lished themselves,in second spot in B Section, and u

nseated Old Haileyburians'when they met

last week . Collegians led most of theday to win by fourteen points . ~ '

Parkside are back in the four byvirtue of their big win over Coburg, with a seven per cent break on OldHaileybury .

Old Melburnians proved too strongfor Monash Blues and the Blues nowhave the task before them - being twogames behind .

The day's thrills were provided byFawkner and Old Trinity . The leadfluctuated at each of the breaks, withTrinity having the upper hand (bysixteen points) into the last quarter.Fawkner kicked five goals straight todraw level with Trinity at the final bell .

In C Section. A.J .A .X. over-ranpreviously undefeated St . Kilda to winby nearly eleven goals, having led allday (and thus proving Jim Fidge's faithin them) . The margin would indicatea very disappointing performance -and one to be avenged this week.

Old Carey have finally made it -and in style - by defeating the thirdplaced Old Brighton by nine points, having been eight points down at three-quarter time, and five goals down at'half-time . Brighton badly need a winto-day, to consolidate their finals hopes .

Geelong moved into third, on percent-age, by virtue of their twenty-one pointwin over fourth spot holder Alphington, whilst Kew again proved their "nuisance"value by toppling Old Ivanhoe and sokeeping them a game behind the fourfight.

Old Xaverians led Hampton Roverscomfortably all day to record a forty-five point win and maintain touch withthe four .

D Section is still fairly wide. Erraticperformances by several sides havemeant that no-one is assured of a finalsberth . Last week all margins were.large, the closest being Melbourne High'sseven goal win over Heatherton andState Bank's forty-four point win overWest Brunswick . The other games sawOld Camberwell home by ninety-twopoints over Elsternwick ; St. Kevin's byseventeen goals over University Highand Power House by one hundred andsix points over Country Colleges .

The E Section "surprise" was A .M .P .Society's twenty point win over BeverleyHills, in a closely contested game uptill three-quarter time .

St . Bede's (section leader) andBulleen-Templestowe (second) eachscored comfortably - over A.N.Z . Bankand Old Mentonians, respectively .

Old Geelong moved back into thefour when they defeated North Bruns-wick by twenty-nine points. La TrobeBlacks are only a game out of the four,

but missed the chance to boost theirpercentage last week against Brunswick .

Thornbury's ninety-nine point winover National Bank sees them undisputedF Section leader, ahead of BulleenUnited, who kept in touch when theyaccounted for Therry.

Commonwealth Bank are now third, having defeated Footscray last week, whilst University Reds came back strong-ly after their rest to defeat MonashWhites .

Junior One leader North Old Boysscored a run-away twenty goal victoryover Old Scotch to retain their unbeatenrecord .` University Blues slipped into second

after their win over the Blacks . TheBlues trailed by five points at three-quarter time but kicked eight goals inthe final term .

Monash University are now third andIvanhoe fourth following wins overGeelong and Ormond respectively .

Hampton Rovers led St . Bernard'scomfortably all day to score by thirty-nine points and thereby moved intosixth position .

In Junior Two, Old Haileyburiansand De La Salle shared "sweep" honoursover West Brunswick and Caulfield andremain at the top, a game and a halfclear of "draw clubs" Coburg and Kcw .De La were the more accurate, how-ever, notching thirty-three goals toO .H's thirty-two .

Old Paradians scored well overTherry after having led all day, andFawkner moved up one spot after theirvictory over Melbourne High .

PREVIEWING TODAY'S GAMES

At the half way point, the Tipsters' ladders no less interesting than those of the Sec-ions .

Syd Whitfield is finding "the unknowns ofF Section" remarkably "true" . He has averagedjust over 3 winners (out of a possible 4) foreach of the 9 rounds so far. The Junior 2draw last week enabled Peter Nathan to securesecond position over D Section's Norm Nugent(by a slender 2 points) .

currently fourth place is held by MichaelArnold, but I am sure that Peter Brukner(seventh) will be hoping for a reversal of theirpositions now that they have swapped Sections .For the remainder of the season Michael willbe tussling with A Section, whilst Peter willattempt success in Junior 1 . (Peter feels he hasthe better of the bargain at this stage - butonly time will tell .)

Jim Fidge and Brian Lauder, fifth and sixthrespectively, have the job in front of them ifthey hope to overhaul the leaders ; whilstrumour has it that Nugget Stephens would pre-fer the "Tattsiotto Six" to the "Tipsters'crown" .

A SECTIO N

After half a season developing a bit of formin Junior Section 1 your tipster has been givenhis chance ir.t A Grade .

Faced with the position that only two gamesseparate the third and last sides in the compe-tition, I'm sure there are going to be a powerof games that are close and hard fought.Selecting winners is never easy but with thecompetition so close and intense there's sureto be plenty of mud in this tipster's eye beforelong .

Uni . Blacks meet De La Salle O .C. at homethis week with the university side buoyantfrom their defeat of Caulfield . Tracey andCordner are in good form but I don't think theywill be strong enough to withstand the pressureof De La Salle O .C ., who will be coming backhard after the defeat inflicted by Ivanhoe .Sheeky will be bound to have his team gearedup for a morale-boosting win and I must selectDe La Salle.

Ormond meet Old Scotch in the game whichshould be the highlight of the round . Ormondhanded out a thrashing to St . Bernard's In agame in which Bruce Bourn e was back to hisniercurial best with 8 goals . Because of theirbetter percentage Ormond are knocking on thedoor of the Four and will be fiercely deter-mined to win . Old Scotch, on the other hand, were great in their defeat by Lint Blues andhave Mason in good goal kicking form . Thisis bound to be a hard fought match and I'mtipping Ormond with their home ground ad-vantage to win .

Ivanhoe, cock-a-hoop after their gallantdefeat of De La Salle, meet Marcellin, whoreceived a severe drubbing at the hands ofNorth O.B .

Ivanhoe realise that Ormond are breathingdown their necks and realise that they mustimprove their percentage as well as keep onwinning to stay in the Four. Sheppard, Jonesand Stewart are in good form and should over-come the stout resistance that Marcellin aresure to provide . Marcellin are in the hot seatas far as relegation is concerned and mustmake every post a winner from now on.

Nort h O .B., after a very slow start, are onthe rise and displaying the . power that tookthem to the top of the ladder in 1977. O'Connorhas been playing excellently and received greatsupport from his team mates . On the otherhand, St . Bernard's are very much on the downafter two crushing defeats and Coach GusMitchell, will have to pull something out of thebox to get the Saints off the floor. Some ofSt . Bernard's stars of yesteryear seem to havelost a lot, of their glitter and most of theirdetermination so I can't see them knocking offthe confident Northerners .

The final game of the round is that betweenCaulfield Grammarians and Uni . Blues. Uni .Blues had a tough game against Old Scotchand are bound to be feeling the after-effects.This will be to the advantage of Caulfield, who just failed against an improved Uni .Blacks: It was good to see a veteran, J.Butcher, in such fine goal kicking form lastweek. Uni Blues are bound to have a let downthis week but Coach Salter should be able toproduce the best from Sleeman, Curnow, Ander-son and others to win out against Caulfield .

My selections are: De La Salle O .C ., Or-mond, Ivanhoe, North O.B . and Uni. Blues -MICHAEL J . ARNOLD .

Weseasonbeen .

have reached the halfway mark of theand what a great competition it ha s

I take this opportunity to congratulate theOld Melburnians Club on the 'magnificentperformance of their team. Apart from theirunbeaten record so far, the manner in whichthey play the game is a credit to the Coachand players of the team.

This week Old Melburnians take on theFawkner Boys at Cordner Oval . Fawkner showedimprovement in their staying power to fightout a draw with Old Trinity last week. I havealways been a keen fan of Fawkner, but Idon't think they are ready to toss O .M .'s justyet. The leaders are doing it well under allconditions, os I'll go for Old Melburnians towin .

PREVIEWS (cont )Parkside meet Collegians at Pitcher Park in

what should be an extremely hard game . Park-side overcame the bad conditions to defeat avery young, well-disciplined Coburg last week .Collegians had a good win over Old Halley-bury, so both sides will line up confidently.Parkside must keep winning at home If theyare to take part in th!s year's Finals, so theywill be quite desperate . Both teams can playa game right out, but I think the advantage ofplaying at home will tip the scales in Parkside'sfavour .

Old Trinity at home, meet Old Paradians inanother difficult one to pick. I have not takena trick with either of these teams so far . Theyare both capable of playing top football . I wasvery impressed with the way the consistentParadians went about their game two weeksago. The bye should not have hurt them so Iwill tip Old Paradians as the winner of thisone .

Monash Blues play host to Old Haileybu ryat the University Oval . The Blues could nothandle O .M .'s last week, but I know of sevenother clubs who have had the same problemthis season . Old Haileybury also lowered theircolours to the Collegians last week and thiswill not go down too well with Coach MikePorter. I have learnt from experience that it isdangerous to tip against Monash Blues whenthey are playing at home, so I'll select Monashto win .

The young Coburg side have the bye . Thiswill give them time to get a few of theirinjured players fit again and back in harness .

I would like to congratulate them on thedisciplined way they played last week. Theyshould have learnt a lot from the game. TheirCoach, Tony Holloway, has the answers, sothey should listen to him and get on with thejob of winning games .

Selections : Old Melburnians, Parkside, OldParadians, Monash Blues - BRIAN LAUDER .

C SECTIO N

Well done, Old Carey! Richard Elliott willbe intrigued to know that I very nearly tippedthem last week. However, while Carey maybe struggling to avoid relegation, this year'sC Section is capable of more upsets with thesecond half of club games commencing today .The "four" is wide open - third to fifthplacings = Geelong, Old Brighton and Alphing-ton - separated by approximately 15%, andOld Ivanhoe and Old Xaverians only one gamebehind . Geelong has the edge in third placeat this stage, having dropped only one game(to A .J .A .X .) in the last six . Old Brighton (myearly flag favourites), in contrast, has slumpeddecidedly in recent weeks .

That was a top effort, A.J.A .X ., in account-ing for St . Kilda so impressively. Today, youmust now dispose of Old Brighton at home Ifyou are to move closer to arresting the topspot. And watch Old Brighton, who are atthe crossroads . A loss to them will threate n

Page 6

their final four hopes . I expect A.J .A.X., athome, to be far too good.Geelong, helped greatly by the inclusion

of brilliant former captain, Lyn Bullen, turnedon its most significant quarter of football foryears, last week . Alphington challenged Gee-long mid-way through the third term andbounced to the lead early in the final quarter, after having been six goals downi Geelongrallied and, with Greg Trevaskis, previously un-sighted, kicking much-needed goals, grabbedback the lead and went on to a good win .

Hampton beat Geelong at the David Re-serve early in the season . I expect Geelong toreverse this result at Queen's Park today .

Old Carey - Old Ivanhoe . I have "won"with my tipping on Ivanhoe at last, I stillthink they are a good enough side to beatOld Carey . However, I must stick with winningform - Carey wili win at Bulleen.

. Old Xaverians are an enigma - down twoweeks ago, up again last Saturday . St . 'Kildamay not be entering a slump, as I'm sure thattheir dedicated President, John White (con-gratulations on 300 games!) will appreciatelast week's loss will prove "a needle" for theclub . Maurie Bilston is a shrewd operator -!expect St . Kilda to be too good for Old Xav'stoday.

Alphington and Kew is a poser . Alphingtonimpresed me last week with their splendidcomeback - they notched eight out of ninegoals kicked at one stage in the game to getin front . Skipper Ivan Bromley has "tons" oftalent and leads his young team well . Kew arecausing trouble to most sides, however, I feelAlphington twill return to fourth place bywinning today .

Selections : A.J .A.X., Geelong, Old Carey,St. Kilda, Alphington - JIM FIDGE.

D SECTION

At the half way mark the Section appears tobe separating into two halves . Teams nowplaced from sixth to ninth have the task infront of them to make the finals .

Country Colleges await State Bankers, whoplay their second consecutive game in RoyalPark. The Colleges acquitted themselvesadequately last week (despite the markedscoreboard difference) . State Bank has only a1976 victory on the Western Oval to its credit .If Colleges have learned from last week andmove the ball quickly to Larry Coates theywill do well . Despite the good play of PeterWynd, I see Colleges doing well enough towin as the game is at Royal Park .

Although Melbourne High School Old Boysdid well last week and now are a real finalfour threat, I believe Old Camberwell Gram-marians will have their measure today . McLardyIs proving a reliable goal source for the 'Wellsand their Brother sets : The Macraes andStevens are giving the side drive each week .Old Camberwell should take the points andmaintain top ranking .

Near neighbours West Brunswick and Uni-versity High School Old Boys meet at theRansford Oval. Neither side has given muchinspiration to its followers of late. West Bruns-wick is my selection because its players ar e

PREVIEWS (cont )more capable of winning the ball, moving itforward and scoring than are those of Uni-versity High School Old Boys.

Elsternwick journey east to meet fourthplaced St. Kevin's Old Boys. To assure victory,St . Kevin's players must produce a four quartereffort . My spies keep telling me of the talentin the Elsternwick side. Unfortunately the,Wickers are not putting the score on theboard and as a result I have to tip St . Kevin'sto take the points.

power House are at home to Heathert on,whose form and lack of consistency must bepuzzeling . Unfortunately Heatherton's press bandoesn't allow me to mention names . On theother hand I was impressed by the abilityevident in the Power House side last Saturday.-,fdan Mountain" Bredyk and Coach Mike Per rygenerated a lot of drive around the ground .Rick Sykes is a focal point for the side . Thestalwart Dakin Brothers believe Evans is a realdynamo and the scoreboard supports theirassumption . I must select Power House to winand in so doing cement the double chancecome September.

Selections : Country Colleges, Old Camber-well Grammarians, West Brunswick, St . Kevin'sO .B ., Power House -' NORM NUGENT.

E SECTIO NOnly one team, Old Mentonians, let me

down last week, and now they have a hardmatch coming up against their neighbours St.Bede's, who are determined to hold the topposition .

Beverley Hills expected me to tip them lastweek, which I did in the paragraph, and thenchanged my mind in the summary which was4 points to my advantage . Prove me wrong thisWeek, because I say you . will go down toB u l lee n-Temptestowe .

Old Geelong have brightened up theirteam work and have made a determined effortto get back into the Four . They will consoli-date their position this week by gaining avictory over A .N.Z. Bank .

A .M .P. are looking towards the Four andhad a good win last week, and should makeit two in a row when they meet Brunswicktoday .

No rth Brunswick don't seem to be able topull off the close matches, and they had themisfortune to loose points early in the seasonplus quite a number of injuries . They will notbe strong enough for La Trobe Blacks.

Selections are : St. Bede's, Bulleen-Temple-stows, Old Geelong, A .M.P., La Trobe Blacks- NUGGET STEPHENS.

F SECTION

Now for the return journey towards the mainreason for all the trouble and strife .

Therry C.C. will be at home to the 'Fitites'and should have the necessary "g and d" tohold their position in the Four .

Uni . Reds play National Bank at the RoyalParade ground . The Bankers, despite what Isaid about them last week, have their fairshare of big blokes and they are capable ofplaying good football . Perhaps a bit flatfootedat, times - but who isn't? The Bankers arequite capable of winning this one and so re-main a final four prospect .

Clayton and Monash Whites should providea close match - not one that would attract abig attendance but this could be the highlightof the Monash season . However, I think thatClayton will have a faint edge.

Bulleen United at home to Thornbury couldbe a preview of a Grand Final and if Thorn-bury are going to fall over in their 1978 charge, this is the match . If Bulleen can match the

- Thornbury vigor and skill, and they should becapable of so doing if they have any hopesof leaving F Section, then today is the day.Should the Berries win, then, in the words of afamous club song, "the premiership is a cake-walk" . Bulleen to win, and no offence meantto Smithy and his crew .

Selections: Therry C .C., National Bank, Clay-ton, Bulleen United, Commonwealth Bank - theidle mob. - SYD WHITFIELD.

JUNIOR 1 SECTION

After a frustrating nine weeks trying tocomprehend A Grade form, I'm now faced withthe task of tipping Junior Section 1 . My pre-decessor tells me that it's a one-horse race, even at this' early stage, but from what I'veseen and heard, I don't think North Old Boysare the certainties that many people believe .Both Monash and Uni . Blues are improvingall the time, but it remains to be seen whetherthey can continue that improvement.

Match of the Day sees Monash at home tothe unbeaten North Old Boys. Monash will 'giveNorth, their hardest game to date and with theadded advantage of their windy home ground,I'm tempted to start off my Juniors tippingcareer with a controversial prediction . How-ever, I'll resist the temptation and stick withNorth . Their form last week was magnificentand they'll be too tall and strong for Monash.

Ormond travel to Geelong, determined tomake amends for their loss last week, atIvanhoe . Geelong are not far away from theirfirst win as they showed in their last homegame where they led Ivanhoe at three-quartertime . Another loss will put Ormond out ofFinal's contention and this should be sufficientincentive for them to scrape home.

Hampton Rovers had a good win last weekover St. Bernard's and are confidently awaitingtheir clash today with Old Scotch . Scotchwere totally overwhelmed by North's strengthlast week and got a sound thrashing . They willnot have things all their own way today, butshould win and consolidate their position in theFour .

Ivanhoe are at home to Uni . Blues in agame vital to both sides. Ivanhoe are out ofthe Four on percentage only and a win todaywould probably see them sneak In . Blues havefinally taken second place and they will notgive it up lightly . After their'good form agains t

PREVIEWS (cont)Hampton, they played poorly for three quarterslast week before finally hiting their straps.Their backline of Phimister, Nicholson, Gibband Harbeson is very steady and they shouldrestrict Ivanhoe to a losing score .

Another vital game is at the University wheretoday wouldA los sBlacks play St. Bernard's .

put the Blacks well and truly on the way toJunior Section 2 . They are improving everyweek and popular coach Ken Frencham hasa very enthusiastic team . They played well forthree quarters last week and if they can puttogether four quarters today they will beatdisappointing St. Bernard's .

° Today's winners will be : North Old Boys,Ormond, Old Scotch, Uni . Blues and Uni . Blacks- PETER BRUKNER .

JUNIOR 2 SECTIO NThe problems involved with being a scribe

seem never ending and this scribe has been"barrelled" for comments made on June 10 .There is no doubt in my mind that the Clubadministration at Ther ry C.C .O .B. is as goodas that of any club and in fact far better thanthe administration for their Under 19 side . Itis the responsibility of the home side to phonein the scores of their game .

The best thing Therry can do is concen-trate on crossing the Yarra and beatingM .H .S.O .B . today. They are 41/2 games pluspercentage outside the Four and must repeat

their first ever win in their first ever Juniorgame if they are to have any chance of makingthe Four .

De La Salle O.C . seem to be following thetrail blazed by Old Haileyburians but they arenot doing as good a job at percentage buiid-ing . West Brunswick are away for the secondweek in a row and their coach has beenworking overtime to lift the side . De La to winbut West will perform better than last week .

The message from the A.M .P . Is that OldHaileyburians may have a few problems digest-ing their cut lunch while they travel to DeCherie Reserve to play Coburg . The home sidedid well to draw with Kew last week andcoming up for their second game in a row athome, will be really fired up to win . Thevisitors have the bigger side but they will beupset by the small game of the small men ofCoburg . Coburg to cause the upset of the day.

Kew are at home to Fawkner and will beall out to make amends for their first rounddefeat . Fawkner had a taste of success lastweek and it was so good they will not give it,up without a hard struggle . However Kew havethe class and should win .

Old Paradians have taken fifth place fromCaulfield Grammarians and now have the Fourin sight . They have a distinct home groundadvantage and should win, provided they canmaintain their concentration .

Selections : Old Paradians, Kew, Coburg,Therry C.C .O .B ., De La Salle O.C. - PETERNATHAN .

BIALL BRIEFSLast week marked the 50th senior game for

one of the Commonwealth Bank's greatest club-men, Greg Dunkley, who is a life member ofthe club, has, this year, secured his place inthe back pocket with his fine exhibitions ofdashing play and his enthusiasm, both on andoff the ground . Although not'the fastest backpocket player in the game, his value is madeup by his experience, teamwork and his vocalattributes . All at Commonwealth Bank wishGreg the very best .

Last week Neil McGregor played his 50thclub game for the Commonwealth Bank . Neilhas proved to be a most valuable player in theReserves, on the forward line . He is the clubrecord holder for the Reserves goalkicking andwe anticipate him breaking, his own recor dagain this season . All at the Bank congratulateNeil and hope he will keep kicking bags' ofgoals.

Bulleen United centreman Rinaldo "Renna"DiVirgilio finally played his 50th game for theclub last week: Although in his 4th season withthe club, "Renna" has been unfortunate withinjuries and the tribunal which has delayed thismilestone in his career with the club . Thisseason has been his best . So far he hasfeatured in the club's best players in everygame . "Renna" was rewarded for his goodservice to' the club by being selected vice-captain for this season .

Congratulations to Greg "fish" Salmon andColin "Scratch" Earle who played their 50thgames for Hampton last week . Both playersstarted with toe Club in the Juniors and havebeen great triers for the club; both on and offthe field .- Great work boys and all at Hamptonlook' forward to your 100th games .
