New To HasleweyScaravelli Inspired Yoga is a Friday morning class, 9.00am – 10.15am and is suitable for every level of student as the emphasis is on quality of movement beyond the achievement of posture and allows you to experience a greater connection to yourself, a quietening of mind and fluidity in your body. The classes are run by yoga teacher, Louisa Burtwell, who is also an aromatherapist and reiki healer and passionate about helping others to return to their natural state of vitality and well-being. Classes are run and charged termly in line with school holidays - £10 per class. For more information – contact Louisa on 0791 9074735.

Mindfulness4Ninjas is at Haslewey every Tuesday from 4.00-5.00pm and teaches children aged 9-13 yrs old mindfulness meditations, techniques and practises. Natasha Brittan has been practising mindfulness for over ten years and has been teaching for one.

“Mindfulness reduces stress and anxiety, improves concentration and allows children to build on, improve and enhance their existing strengths making them more focussed,” says Natasha. “By becoming more aware of their bodies and their thinking, children can learn to calm and soothe themselves and become aware of the messages in their emotions. Mindfulness also helps deal with negative emotions, encourages a positive self-image and helps manage exam performance and social media pressure.”

Parents are invited to join the final session so that the children can share what they have learnt. Private groups of four wishing to learn mindfulness in a four week course and who quote “Haslewey” will be given a 15% discount.

Another new activity to promote relaxation and to refresh your spirit is Yoga for Well-Being. A qualified Yoga teacher for over 18 years, Eleanor O’Brien says Yoga has long-term health benefits and greatly improves posture and flexibility bringing about calmness and balance. The class runs every Tuesday from 9.00-10.00am and the first session is £6.00 instead of the usual £10.00.

For the more artistically inclined there’s an Oil Painting Art Class for all abilities every Thursday from 11.00am – 1.00pm with art teacher, Clare Oakley-Bowen. “We use the Haslewey Activity Room as it’s perfect for light and size,” says Clare. “It’s a relaxed atmosphere as you can imagine, but with structured teaching, demonstrations and class discussions. There’s lots of practical painting and colour mixing and a handout to take away and practise. Students of all ages work from simple ‘still lives’ ie a teacup or fruit and vegetables, working towards painting landscapes.” For more information go to www.clarebowen.blogspot.co.uk.

Hear, Hear!!Anyone who has tried to attend a meeting in the Haslewey Activity Room will know that the acoustics aren’t particularly great, especially for our hard of hearing groups and those who rely on hearing aids. The echo was often quite deafening and many users had difficulty following simple conversations.

Thanks to the Haslewey Fundraising Committee, we have installed five echo boards. The boards are cleverly disguised as canvasses and feature pictures of Haslewey users during their various activities – brilliantly taken by the official Haslewey photographer, Gareth Davies from Studio GD photography. The boards act to absorb the sound rather than reflect it, reducing the echo. Not only do the boards look great – but the room now sounds fantastic!

What A Larf!!!The first weekend of June saw the Haslewey Comedy Night entertain a packed audience. The compere was, again, local comic Andy Stedman, who cleverly mixed songs, gags and audience banter in readiness for each individual act.

Tickets were just £10 per head and a hot and cold snack menu was available together with an in-house Bar. Profits raised were a staggering £546, which will be used to fund free community activities.

The Headliner was Mike Gunn, who has recently appeared on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, as well as supporting Lee Mack on tour. It was a major coup to book Mike as he is one of the top comics on the UK circuit!

Mike was ably supported by Erich McElroy, a hugely likeable American comedian and regular at London’s Comedy Store, who took the audience through the American Presidential election in an intelligent and hilarious manner, together with charming Italian, Luca Capani, who is the current “So You Think You’re Funny” Edinburgh Fringe Champion and Comedy Store raconteur.

It was laugh out loud amusement for locals of all ages and the next Comedy Night is planned for Saturday, November 26th.

Thank You St. Ives!A huge Haslewey thank you to the pupils of St. Ives School in Haslemere. These two delightful young ladies came to invite us to their school Summer Fete on June 11th and presented us with a lovely bouquet of flowers, arranged by the pupils themselves! A fantastic example of community spirit – and the flowers brightened up Haslewey’s reception area beautifully!

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!Haslewey shared Lion Green along with nearly two hundred other classic and vintage cars at the annual Classic Car Show, on a beautiful sunny Sunday at the end of May. Now in its eighth year, the Classic Car Show has more than tripled in size and is a favourite fixture on the Haslemere Events calendar. We had a fabulous 1955 Fiat 500 on our stand which belonged to a friend of Haslewey and we ran a successful tombola which raised nearly £120, which will contribute towards our free Summer events for children!
