The Power of Social Media

by cristina david Back in high school, I could survive a month without checking my Facebook or Twitter account. But during the typhoon last month, when there was no electricity and the internet connection was down, I felt like I was going to die. College students, like me, today find it impossible to live without the internet because social media holds great power in our daily lives. We have become too heavily dependent on social media that it has become almost impossible for us to put our gadgets down, and leave the world of social media behind. The main reason why social media receives so much hype from college students is that it provides convenient communication, and communication plays a vital role in the life of a college student. When we communicate with other people, we build connections that will help us throughout our college life. Through social networking sites, it has become easier to connect with people, anytime, anywhere. College students find it almost impossible to function without the internet. We cannot write our essays or read our required texts because everything is in social media! Even our professors use social media, especially Facebook, to post our readings and provide instructions for our assignments. Also, social media is used whenever there are group projects. With the help of Facebook chat,

rendezvous. Some can even finish their group projects through group chats without even meeting up.

In college, it is important to stay updated with what is happening with the world. Social networking sites not only update us with the trending topics, but also inform us about current news and events. It is easier to access these information via social media, along with the best part: the comments! Social media has made it easier for people to comment or share their opinions regarding the articles. These comments allow us to scrutinize the different stands of people and find out which opinions are valid, and which ones are just bogus, so that we can formulate our own thoughts regarding the issue. Reading comments of people who are arguing and correcting each other’s grammar even provide comic relief from serious issues.

Aside from being advantageous for academics, social media provides entertainment for college students. Social networking sites are specially designed for the enjoyment of its users. Since we have heavy workloads and hectic schedules, it doesn’t hurt to take a break every once in a while. One can relieve stress by stalking their crush’s profile, chat with friends, or watch videos or listen to songs on Youtube.

Page 5: Hashtag mag

The entertainment value of social media, however, is sometimes abused by its users, causing it to become a distraction for them. This is why our parents used to scold us whenever we are using the computer when we were younger. Adults find social media as an interruption from our school work. Since we are now older, and as others would say: mature, adults can no longer control our online activities. Often times, college students get too carried away with chatting with their friends or looking at too many pictures or 9gag. This causes them to forget that they still have tasks to do. This is only one of the many disadvantages of social media.

Social media is known as the cause of cyberbullying. Those who do not observe caution and responsibility when using social networking sites find themselves bashed by other users. As college students, we are usually more open minded and straightforward with our ideas and opinions. We have the tendency to post or tweet rants about what is going with our surroundings. These posts may offend others, or may cause others to bout us through their comments.

The list of the advantages and disadvantages of social media are countless. The power of social media, however, only depends on its users. In the case of college students, the power of social media is its ability to connect with the world. But it does not stop there. It is a challenge to our generation to explore and expand the power of social media, in order to make it an even more efficient tool in our daily lives, not just in college.

An atenean’s wardrobe

by tricia say

Ateneans, regardless of stress, still care about what they wear. They dress up every day hoping that they don’t see someone wearing exactly the same thing as what they are wearing. It’s like a fashion show where they show off their best clothes and make sure that no one has ever seen them in the same outfit twice. Fashion is definitely one attraction here and people who have actually been to visit Ateneo can agree. Colored shorts, boat shoes, and outfits that turn heads – these are the true blue Atenean fashion.

Ateneo fashion is divided among guys and girls. Guys, base their look on what is called “the JSEC look” and just find a way to make it their own while girls base their outfits on the latest trends.

Guys aren’t usually the type to dress up or care if they have repeated shirts, jeans, shorts or outfits but when they dress up, they look like they’ve prepared it the night before. Yes, some students don’t follow this certain trend and while that is okay, they end up not being in the “in”. For those who do, they are those who are considered well dressed and people worth looking at. The different colors of shorts that you can see is like seeing a bunch of rainbows spread out in the campus.

Their shirts are mostly either black, grey, or white to match the colored shorts and who can forget the boat shoes that finish the outfit – JSEC look. This look is what guys usually go for once they enter as Ateneans not only because it’s easy to pull off but also because this is the ‘in’ outfit in school. Girls on the other hand, don’t just have one look. They base their whole outfit on what’s new. They dress to impress. Girls make sure they wear the latest trends like this year’s biggest trend - skater skirts and rompers or jumpers. Skater skirts are very convenient in ways that every girl needs. One, because they can be worn with almost any top from tanks to normal shirts. Two, they come in every color so it’s not that hard to find things that match with it. Three, they are the best to have on lazy days. So when girls don’t feel like stressing on their outfit, they can just get the skirt and a white shirt, and they’ll look good without the stress. Fourth, they look good on anyone. With rompers and jumpers while not many think they can pull it off, they are one of the perfect thing to wear right now. They are something everyone can wear. On lazy days, they are the simplest and easiest thing to wear. The way that one does not have to think of a top to match with their jeans, this would

Page 8: Hashtag mag

be really good for those who are always in a hurry. Not that they’re only good for convenience but they look really good as well. Girls don’t only have these two as choices however. These two were mere examples of what girls have been wearing to show off in the campus. There are a lot of crazes this year that girls can show up in for school like one of the classiest yet still latest trends – skinny jeans. This can never go out of style. It is something many will be comfortable in. This is the thing with the fashion in Ateneo. They do look good and they do seem like they have been thought over the whole night before. They are also however, very comfortable. They are comfortable yet chic. That’s is how one can describe the perfect outfit here in the campus. Yes, it may actually seem that that is not the case but it is. Sometimes, girls also tend to just wear shorts and a shirt but they still make the outfit look nice by wearing maybe printed shorts with a plain tee. They can also make it look stylish by wearing high-waisted shorts and a tight-fit shirt. Lazy days are never actually lazy days when it comes to outfits here. Whether it be a full on head-turning outfit or a casual day with shorts, Atenean girls work to look good. In the end, we can see that yes trends in the campus for guys and girls, are those that are comfortable and yes, sometimes too casual but never do they look bad. They will always be outfits that stand out in a very good way. Outfits are the ways to bring out self-confidence in the students that no other thing can do. They can be the way that the students finally let other people see who they are without stressing out. Comfortable but chic – this is the wardrobe of Ateneo.

COOKIES AND CREAM BROWNIES

Oreos are one of America's favorite cookies for a reason. The winning combination of chocolate cookies and sweet cream comes in one of America's most prized food forms: the sandwich. Whether you twist them apart to

eat one side at a time or dunk the whole cookie in milk, Oreos are as fun to eat as they are delicious. At 102 years old, these cookies prove that classic never goes out of style.

Another reason we'll never tire of Oreos is that there are countless ways to enjoy them, because they make amazing desserts. Cookies and cream is clearly a winning ice cream flavor; so of course cookies, brownies, donuts and cakes in that flavor would be a hit too. And that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to

Oreos recipes. Here’s a recipe for COOKIES AND CREAM BROWNIES!

Ingredients 10 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temp 1 1/4 cups white sugar 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tsp vanilla extract 2 large eggs 1/2 cup all purpose flour 1/4 cup semi sweet chocolate chips 15 oreo cookies, crushed and divided

Instructions 1. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9x9 baking pan with tin

foil and spray with non-stick baking spray. 2. In a large saucepan over medium high heat, melt the butter. 3. Once the butter has melted, add the white sugar and cocoa powder.

Stir to combine and remove from the heat. 4. Add the salt, vanilla and eggs, whisking until fully incorporated. 5. Add in the flour, chocolate chips and half of the crushed oreo

cookies and stir until just combined. 6. Scoop the batter into the prepared baking pan. Sprinkle the

remaining oreo cookies on top. 7. Place the pan into the oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes.

Remove the pan from the oven and let the cookie and cream brownies cool for at least 2 hours.

8. Remove the brownies from the pan by lifting the tin foil out. Place the brownies on the counter, cut into 12 squares and serve.

Dealing with College stress by hera “jet” cambal

Faye, a third-year psychology student in the Ateneo de Manila University, has almost reached her limit. She has a test due the next day but still can’t concentrate on any of her assigned readings. She has been reading the same page over and over for the past 20 minutes with droopy eyes because she wasn’t able to sleep properly the night before. She tries to eat a normal meal but ends up finishing less than half of it. She feels overwhelmed and inadequate for not being able to properly balance her school life, org life, and social life. What do you think is Faye’s issue? Irregular sleeping patterns, loss of appetite, and confusion. These are just one of the many signs of stress which is a common problem among college and university students. According to the book Managing Stress: Principles and Strategies for Health and Well-Being (Seaward 17), some of the more common causes of stress that college students encounter are:

Page 12: Hashtag mag

a. Professional pursuits To the people who have already decided which path to take even before college, lucky for you guys. But what about the indecisive ones? These are the poor students who are afraid that they might end up choosing the wrong course, or believing that they found The One but was just actually blinded by the things that people tell them, or they are being forced by their parents to take up a certain course that they don’t agree on.

b. Academic deadlines These are the papers, thesis, and assignments that you have to cram in the evening because you have been enjoying a good book, or an addicting movie series, or you were just simply procrastinating; and when you finally finish all of them at 3 in the morning, you feel all the weight of the stress and your regrets for not doing it the morning before.

c. Peer groups and peer pressure (drugs and alcohol) When you constantly look for a group of people where you want to feel like you belong. You also want to be accepted by your peers and the only thing you can think of in order for this to happen is by giving in to peer pressure.

d. Friendships These are the troublesome misunderstandings, lengthy arguments and unavoidable drama. There is also that certain friendship with someone that becomes intimate through time which adds even more pressure (and pleasure) to your already stressed out social life.

e. Budgeting your money This problem is very common among financial scholars and dormers (rich kids not included). Wanting to buy all the scrumptious-looking food from inside the campus, to Katipunan, to UP Maginhawa; or wanting to buy that extremely adorable top that you saw in a boutique but can’t because you already spent too much money drinking with your friends the week before.

Page 13: Hashtag mag

Although college stress may seem very overwhelming and scary, there are plenty of ways to

defeat them (and lose those eye bags under your face altogether) so that you will wake up in the

morning, blooming and lively; ready to face the challenges with a smile on your face and not go to

class looking like a grumpy zombie.

Plan your finances. Yes, planning is the key to everything! Make a list of your expenses or the things that you are going to spend on so as to be aware of your finances. If you are too lazy to plan how you’re going to spend your allowance beforehand (like me), at least try to download a budgeting application on your phone and update it daily. It will only take you 20 seconds to input your expenses so you don’t have an excuse to miss a day.

Manage your time well. Every college student knows that time is a luxury that not everyone can afford so the best thing that you could do is to manage it well. You can start by writing a list of all the things that you need to achieve within the day or week and choose which ones you are going to prioritize. Also, try to avoid distractions as hard as you can; and by distractions, I mean that book beside you waiting to be opened or that TV in front of you waiting to be turned on.

Go out and exercise. Give yourself a few minutes to just take in your surroundings and listen to your thoughts. Exercise can help you in reducing your stress hormones and it improves your mood and gives you an energy boost.

Take good care of your body. Eating right and getting enough rest are on top of the list. Choose the right food that you know will help in setting you up to do your best. Although those junk food and fast food seem like a good idea to curb the unhealthy side of your appetite, opting for vegetables, fruits, and healthy meals are better since they are enough to keep you going minus the guilt that the former foods will give you.

Reach out. Creating deep bonds with your family and friends is a good way to relieve stress. Try talking to them and telling them what you feel. If you think that their advices aren’t enough, seek for a counselor to help you.

Stress is not always a bad thing, though. It can actually help you in ways that you might fail to notice. Stress can help you to become more competitive in life. It pushes you to achieve more and be more. It assists you into walking your path to success.

BEFORE THEY EXIT by jayne yang “Take it off! Take it off!” People chanted

in unison towards the stage.

“I can’t even get this off. It’s like,

super tight,” Riley McDonough complained.

With some difficulty, Riley finally removed his

jacket, revealing a fitted white tee. He used

his jacket to wipe the sweat off his forehead,

glistening in the lights of the stage.

“So right now, we’re going to play you

guys one of our favorite songs that

we’ve ever written. This one, we put a

music video out for about, two months

ago,” Riley’s brother, Connor, said, before

jamming into Soldier, a song they wrote.

Riley and Connor McDonough, along with their

youngest brother, Toby, sang a total of 11

songs at the Samsung Hall in SM Aura. After

singing heartily for more than an hour, they

showed their gratitude for their fans by

singing an encore of their hit song, I Like

That.

They constantly thanked everyone for being such

great fans, and they frequently repeated their

desire to come back to such an amazing country

with equally amazing fans.

“That was so much fun, Manila! We love

the Philippines!” Toby gushed.

Page 16: Hashtag mag

“Manila was a dream come true tonight. The support you all give will never fail to amaze me. Love you guys!” Riley added enthusiastically. The three brothers came to the Philippines last May 2013 to perform for Circuit Fest in Makati. They came back May this year to have their first headlining concert in the country, which included a meet and greet. On the morning of the concert, they guested for the radio station RX 93.1. The day after their concert, they appeared in ASAP 19, giving an interview and singing for the fans. Before You Exit is composed of four Orlando, Florida natives. Three of them, Connor, Riley, and Toby McDonough are brothers of American-Irish descent. The other member, Thomas Silvers, plays exclusively for concerts and live performances. The band appears on shows, music videos, and promotions as a trio of brothers, with the middle child, Riley, as the lead-vocalist.

I have been to quite a few concerts of foreign bands and attending Before You Exit’s concert was quite more memorable than the others. This is because of the meet and greet after party that they offered for hardcore fans, which is quite rare for music acts performing here in the Philippines. After their energetic encore, the trio headed outside the Samsung Hall to their meet and greet party session. They were met by loud and chaotic fans. My friends and I joined the raucous chaos and screamed at the top of our lungs, feeling pure excitement and joy from being able to be in close contact with the handsome trio. We snaked our way through the crowd, trying to stay within reach of the brothers. I listened to how they spoke with their fans before I could build up the courage to speak with them myself. I follow the whole band on social media, and they constantly update their pages with fun, crazy, and down-to earth pictures and captions. When they don’t post something fun, they post inspirational words or quotes. One thing that Riley tweeted recently is that he wishes people could see how much love others have for them when they’re still alive, and not when they’re gone. I wanted to see if they were as funny and as mature as their online personas.

Connor, the eldest, is the shortest, but what he lacked in height, he made up for with friendliness and approachability. When almost everyone has spoken to them and has taken pictures with them, my friends and I approached them slowly. Connor, noticing us, called out.

Page 17: Hashtag mag

He said, “Hey! Don’t be shy; come over here!” He smiled his lopsided smile, his

blue eyes inviting. My heart did a somersault. I practically ran over to ask for a picture with them.

“Sure!” They all said in unison.

Connor put his arm around my shoulder as we had our pictures taken.

I asked them to sign the poster and CD that I brought to the concert.

“Sure! What’s your name?” Connor

asked me. I said Jayne, with the Y in the middle, writing my name on my hand to show them. They all agreed to and as they passed the merchandise to each other, Connor kept on saying that he loved the Philippines. They all kept on saying thank you to us for being awesome fans.

Before they left the meet and greet session, I wanted to approach them again to say goodbye, to say thank you for being such great inspirations with the songs they make, for writing songs that have a great impact on teenagers, even saving lives with their lyrics. I read on their official website that they’ve heard of people who were saved by their song, Soldier. I wanted to thank them for singing from their hearts, for giving their audience a concert to remember for ages. Unfortunately, the band left before I could reach them. They all wrote a different message on my poster, all inspiring. Riley wrote “Failure should be a way of learning, not a lifestyle. ~ Riley”. Connor’s was “Treat everyone right and never take anyone for granted. ~Connor”. Finally, Toby’s message goes like “Live life and have fun. ~Toby”. I don’t know who wrote the last one, but it goes “Jayne, keep smiling! ~ Before You Exit.”

Page 18: Hashtag mag

For such young people, Connor is 21, Riley is 19, and Toby is 16 this year, they have the minds and souls of mature individuals. Their band name is proof of that. According to their official website, their name means “before you exit – make a difference.” They all have deep insights regarding life, as evident with their messages and social media posts, and shown through the songs they write for their band. I thought that what they showed onscreen and online were only masks, scripted and rehearsed personas. I was proved wrong when I met them in person. The atmosphere I sensed from them felt truly honest and I felt innocence oozing from their smiles and faces. The band started in 2007 as a band starring Connor McDonough, Thomas Silvers, and Braiden Wood. A year later, Riley was recruited as a back-up singer, and two years ago, their youngest brother, Toby, also got enlisted. Thomas and Braiden lessened their exposure by becoming exclusive to live performances, Braiden eventually leaving to start a solo career. Riley became their lead vocalist, with Connor becoming an all-around instrumentalist. The band travels across the USA, and occasionally travels globally for tours. In all these tours, they always have at least one parent accompanying them. All these show how tight-knit the McDonough brothers are as a family and as a band. Despite having the fame they have, they still remain grounded and friendly. Their reputation has not made them conceited, but instead has developed them as teenagers becoming young adults. Which, in turn, has

let them learn how to appreciate the little things in life. They know how to remain sensible and humble despite their popularity, because they know how to have fun and how to focus on life’s priorities. They started as average teenagers, looking to have fun with the music they make, eventually ending up as one of the hottest young acts in America, eventually making a difference, before they exit.

Modern day girls by claudia tuaño

If there’s one thing to know about girls is that they are very much into movies. You can just have one of those days that you feel awful about life and you need a good cry so you turn on your laptop and have a cry fest in your darkened room with a supply of comfort food that can feed you for at least three days. There’s just something about watching other girls deal with their problematic friends, their controlling families and the complicated guy that just makes our lives just a little bit better. This has been the problem for years now. Movies dating back as early as 1984 have been on most teenage girls’ TV screens. Every girl is just waiting for the moment that true love would prevail. Maybe in the back of their minds, they can just see themselves in the main character in the movie that they are watching. Typically,

every chick flick has the same concept. The protagonist – usually girls in movies like this – is having an internal battle with herself on what she thinks is the point of her life. Somewhere along the road, the quirky best friend tries to help her out as much as she can but only resulting to have a fight with the protagonist. Then you have the cliché of the family that doesn’t understand but plays a big role in the movie too. But you can always expect that while all of this chaotic drama with the girl’s friends and family is occurring, the perfect boy is being as sweet and charming as ever. Making us hope that one day we would be able to find the perfect guy for us also. In a lot of ways, the movie that we have today is not that different from what our moms had in their teenage years. We still have Katniss

Page 21: Hashtag mag

in their teenage years. We still have Katniss Everdeen who is identical to Kat Stratford from the movie “10 Things I Hate About You”. Both of them just wanted to do what’s best for their family and in the end they are rewarded by a love so genuine and true. Cher Horowits (Clueless) might not be battling cancer like Hazel Grace Lancaster but they’re both trying to be something different and not just what people think they should be. Hazel and Cher are alike in the way that they’re often looked down upon. Cher is often seen as a shallow girl that only cares about shopping and gossiping with her friends. She wanted to make a difference and at the end she did. Hazel is a little different though. Hazel is being restricted by her illness. She knows that her days are numbered and yet she still continues her life. At first she was skeptical on letting someone in her life but in the end she found happiness that she never knew she would feel. We shouldn’t forget about Tris Prior also. Tris Prior is basically who every teenage girls wants to be right now. In our generation today we often feel controlled by our own parents. Even in the times that it’s up to us to make our choice, our parents have that influence

our choice, our parents have that influence towards us. We would just like to have that moment of complete recklessness and just do something that we would actually like to do. I just named a few examples of iconic chick flicks but at the end of the day, what’s important is the lesson that these movies are trying to give. Chick flicks are different from Disney movies and fantasies because movies like this show us what real life is really about. You just don’t get things by doing nothing; you have to work hard for it even though along the way you may think that you’ll lose something very important to you. Girls shouldn’t grow up waiting for their Prince Charming to come. Everyday we find inspiration to live life the way we want it through these kinds of movies. Dozens of girls had been fortunate enough to be the best version of themselves but the real struggle is trying to find whom you are and what you want to do with your life. Every girl has her own story. Every girl has her own problems. Having movies like these are our escape to our chaotic mind.
