ok so this quote relates to scotland but to be honest i think it can be applied to most of northern Britain too!

July already and I for one, am hoping that summer is upon us. School children are preparing for the summer break, exams nished for this year, and the joys of sports day, end of term concerts and school reports are ahead. For parents of school children July does of course herald the start of at least 6 weeks of entertaining children – looked forward to by many, but dreaded

by others! Personally I love the break from routine and my days being less timetabled by school runs and evening

activities, although I am lucky to have more exibility in my working hours than most working parents.

Whatever plans you have for July, I hope that the sun shines on you, and I hope you get the opportunity to enjoy the longer days while they last.

The August issues will be delivered to you late July, anything that you would like included

should be with me by Friday 12th July.

Bus Shelter issuesWe all want to see more Bus shelters in the town but we don’t seem to be able to look after the ones we have got! Why would any Bus company put up more shelters for them to be vandalised and used as public toilets. i know not every one uses the Bus service but spare a thought for those who do, they should not have to stand in a shelter that smells of pee and vomit. if you have been for night out try using the pub toilet before you leave or wait till you get home, but please don’t use the Bus shelters.

ACe subsequently bought the work – the fl at was removed from the building ( over 31 tonnes of concrete and steel) – that i would have liked to have seen - and shipped up to the Yorkshire sculpture Par where a new gallery has been built to house

Does this sound familiar?“We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”.These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’. Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or even nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them.Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps your should take now to protect your home.

Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,250. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your Will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Our free information pack tells you all you need to know about protecting your home from future care charges and also includes details of our special ‘Bloodline Trust Wills’ which prevent your children and grandchildren from losing their inheritance due to a child’s divorce, remarriage or financial difficulties.

FREE INFORMATION PACKTo receive a free copy of our information pack, without obligation, call our local office today on

01302 794647Lines open Mon - Fri 8am - 8pm Sat & Sun 10am - 4pm or email your name and address to: [email protected]

all our lives, why should the Local Authority get it

all?”

Also POWER OF ATTORNEY

APRIL KING are your local specialists and most of our clients come to us

having already made ‘Mirror Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, you and your spouse (or partner)

leave your respective share of your home to the children in Trust but say that they

cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse/ partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test

calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or

move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their

inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.

Do you Qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive

and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a

surviving spouse who now owns theproperty outright. It is therefore important

for couples to act now.

Presentationnight successes for all

We also hope that you the people of harworth and Bircotes will support the club as we are trying to invest in the facilities to make it a whole round better experience for all and the lads that are working hard on the pitch deserve your support, we are a close knit community and this club is for everyone so really hope to see more of you up at scrooby road next season.

Please visit our website for all the winners and photos from Presentation night it is on Pitch hero and just enter harworth Colliery, you can also follow us on our Facebook Page and twitter @hCiFC.

the club is always striving to get more people involved with the club and what we would love to get back to would be having a junior team for each age group, as at present we just

at the end of May the club held its annual Presentation night at the Welfare Hall to celebrate all the players that had done so well throughout the year, what made it more special was that the Junior teams were also present for the 1st time in many years and the club was delighted with the turn out. although the club as a whole didn’t win any silverware we have seen great improvements mainly from the 1st team and the whole set up surrounding the club. We hope that this will spread through the rest of the teams and all will be challeng-ing for silverware next season.

have 12’s, 13’s and 16’s, if any readers would be interested in coaching and starting a team up the club are more then happy to support with every aspect of that, and welcome teams coming back to the club.

As ever to support investment the club has to fundraise and we are delighted to announce a fundraising sportsmans dinner with lee sharpe on the 20th July, the night will also include comedian and ticket price is just £20, includes pie & peas and a pint, it should be a great night and hope that the local community as ever will get behind us and sell the evening out, all details are on the poster below, we hope to see you there and keep a look out for forthcoming friendly fi xtures.

We hope 2013-2014 will be our year.regards Jonathan Wilson

TUESDAY 9TH JULYTHURSDAY 11TH JULY

as i take a break from the heat of the mid day sun perched under the shade of a Banyan tree, i am staggered by its beauty and the clever way it has adapted to colonising and ‘getting around’. The large structures which develop from the underside of the 20 foot high branches head south and take root into the dry dusty soil as they hit the ground. With a record high temperature of 100 (f) and only 30 inches of water per year these are pretty hostile conditions - you may have noticed, i am not in the UK!

An 11 hour fl ight will transport you to Key West, Florida where the views are simply breathtaking and although some locals claim you can almost see Cuba (at a mere 90 miles out to sea?) i found some of the best views had no distance at all. For me the most stunning were the small, intimate courtyards created to the front and rear sides of the colonial houses. these beautiful little oases in the town provide not only

a welcoming entrance, but also a cool shady place, where the several layers of plants seem at home.

Although none of them indigenous to the area (due to the lack of soil on the island) they grow happily together and have done for years - mainly thanks to the daily irrigation! the plants are there for one reason only, to provide much needed shade from the sun. the plant life is diverse due to this being the only frost free place in the UsA and to me, looks like a scene from my local garden centres houseplant department. Ficus trees and Coconut palms provide shade for less sun loving ferns. All tropical and all enjoying the high humidity (so that’s why the tips of my parlour palm always go brown!

As i sit in the garden located at the rear of the oldest house on the island a small lizard drinks from what’s left

of a puddle, created by the irrigation system of course. Jamaican style music plays in the background, its origin a local bar i presume, disturbed only by the intermittent and even louder ‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ thanks to the resident cockerel. set free many years ago as a result of illegal cock fi ghting, these chirpy chaps roam free here, having found it easy to become native – and i can see why.T

Until next time,happy gardening, Lee...

england v Barbarians 26 May 2013a group of pupils, parents and staff were treated to a visit to Twickenham to watch england play The Barbarians at rugby Union on sunday 26 May 2013. The trip came about due to MP John Mann’s pledge to enable youngsters from Bassetlaw to see top class sport as part of his olympic legacy for the area. Nottinghamshire Councillor, sheila Place, played her part too by paying for the transport.

All involved in the trip thoroughly enjoyed the day in which england comprehensively beat the Barbarians. For many of the pupils it was their fi rst experience of live sport and the memory will remain with them for a long time.T

Pupils and staff from st Patrick’s recently joined with pupils from st Peter’s school, doncaster for their residential visit to Northumberland. st Pat’s make the journey every other year and always accompany st Peter’s who make the trip each year.

the schools stayed at the svP (st vincent De Paul society) camp on lindisfarne and enjoyed an

action packed week with visits to: Beamish, Bamburgh Castle, the Farne islands, edinburgh Zoo and the life Centre in Newcastle, as well as exploring lindisfarne itself.

the pupils and staff got on very well and it was a great way for those moving onto mcAuley high school, Doncaster, to make new friends ahead of starting there in september.

Following a number of calls to the Police regarding people offering items for sale visiting door-to-door who appear to be targeting areas occupied by elderly residents and who have used aggressive sales methods the Police would offer the following advice;

ANSWERING YOUR DOOR • LOCK – Keep your front and

back doors locked even when you are at home.

• STOP – Before you answer, stop and think whether you are expecting anyone. Check you have locked the back door and taken the key out. Look through a spy hole or window to see who the caller is.

• CHAIN – If you decide to open the door, put the chain or door bar on first, if you have one. Keep the chain or bar on while you are talking to the caller. With PVC doors, it can be difficult and costly to fit a door chain. Check with the manufacturer before you buy a PVC door, that a chain will be fitted.

• FIRE SAFETY – Only put on your door chain as you answer the door - don’t keep it on all the time as this could delay your exit in case of fire.

• CHECK – Look at their clothing. Some official callers will have a uniform bearing their organisation’s name or symbol. Even if the caller has a pre-arranged appointment with you, check their identity card carefully. Close the door while you do this. If you are still unsure, call the company concerned to verify

their representative’s identity. Don’t use a phone number on the card, as it could be fake, so look up the company in the phone book if you can. If you’re still not sure, ask the caller to come back later when someone is with you.

IF THINGS GO WRONG You have rights under the Supply

of Goods and Service Act 1982. For initial advice and information

on all the aspects of buying goods and services contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or visit www.consumerdirect.gov.uk

Most utility companies operate a password scheme for older or vulnerable customers. You can register with the scheme and their representative will have to confirm your password when they visit to prove they are a genuine employee of the company.

If you are still not happy, phone the police on 999 and tell us what has happened. Warn your neighbours and friends. Information can also be given anonymously on the Crimestoppers number of 0800 555111.T

Dealing with unexpected callers

If you think a bogus caller has been to your home, call the policeimmediately on 999. If you have any doubts KEEP THEM OUT

in recent weeks, thousands of drivers have been caught breaking the law as a result of Nottinghamshire Police’s “Fatal Four” campaign.

this campaign has focussed on the four most common causes of serious injury or death on the roads:• speed • Not wearing a seatbelt • Drink driving • Driving while using a mobile phone.

most of the motorists who were stopped for one or more of the Fatal Four off ences during this campaign were eligible for an education course, rather than facing prosecution. But what the campaign shows is that far too many drivers are prepared to risk their own life and the lives of others by breaking road safety rules.

But observing the road safety rules is the responsibility of every road user. speed kills – and every motorist should drive within the speed limit.

Wearing a seatbelt could save a valuable life – YoUrs – so make sure your wear your seatbelt on every journey, no matter how short.

Using a mobile phone while driving means you are not concentrating on the road and you haven’t got full control of your vehicle. As a result you are far more likely to

be involved in an accident.

one drink too many will cost you a great deal more than a hangover the next morning. in fact, drink driving could cost you a lot more than you think:

• A court conviction.

• A driving ban of at least 12 months.

• An endorsement on your licence for 11 years.

• A criminal record.

if you get caught drink driving, this is the minimum that will happen to you. You may also be liable for a fi ne of up to £5,000 and up to six months in prison.

in addition, there are the every day consequences of being caught drinking and driving.

on a summer evening it may be very tempting to have an extra glass of cool lager or another bottle of beer at a barbecue, but please don’t be tempted.

to understand the consequences of that extra drink, you’ll have to use your imagination.

For a start, you’ll have to rely on friends and family to drive you where you need to go. For even the most basic trips – to the supermarket or the cinema – you’ll be dependent on the local bus service or taxis.

You may have to sell your car to pay the fi ne – or watch it rusting away for 12 months.

imagine having to fi nd a new job. You won’t be able to drive to work or drive for work.

many employers refuse to hire people with criminal records and you will have to explain your criminal record at every job interview.

Along with all of this, how would you feel to have a serious injury or even a death on your conscience as a result of driving under the infl uence of alcohol.

And don’t think ‘it won’t happen to me’. every year around 100,000 drivers who thought they could get away with it are caught.

the police are trained to spot all the tricks drink drivers use to avoid being caught. they can ask you to take a breath test if they suspect you have been drinking or if you commit a traffi c off ence while driving. You don’t need to be involved in a crash.

the Fatal Four campaign may have fi nished, but that doesn’t mean the police will be any less vigilant.

So drive safely, avoid the Fatal Four and save lives on the road. One of them could be yours!.T

similarly Bassetlaw cuts the grass on their land e.g. snipe Park and the tommy simpson Field, and the lawns fronting council houses, such as on the Green. Notts CC was responsible for the grass on the verges next to the road, and for some small pockets of land they own. Would you believe that they sent out a man all the way from mansfi eld to cut their half of Common lane, and then Bassetlaw sent out their own team to cut the remaining bit on the other half of the path? What a waste of time and resources. each authority has a diff erent rota for grass cutting; there was no synergy or co-ordination. And no recognition that grass needs cutting much more frequently in the summer months.

h&B now cuts the grass on behalf of County; we receive a small payment for doing this and though it does not cover our costs, we believe it is better to cut the grass as and when it needs cutting, keep our town tidy, and thus better serve our community.

We cut the grass verges almost weekly in the summer; in this way the short blades of cut grass mulch down and don’t cause a problem. last month our mower broke down; it took a week to get the spare part and then complete the repair. this meant that grass on the verges had got longer than usual, and when it was cut it scattered onto paths and roads. Now that we have a second mower (assigned for the cemetery)

a strimmer has to be used, which as you know scatters the cut grass.

• Windy Days. People place a wide variety of items on graves, for all sorts of reasons special to them. Please understand, such items get scattered by the wind, and staff do not know from which graves they came; by the same token trees do shed their leaves and yes, after strong winds the cemetery can look untidy. Blame mother Nature, not the cemetery staff .

• Neglected Graves. in the oldest part of the cemetery are graves obviously long forgotten and in need of some t.l.C. responsibility lies with the family of the deceased, though we know that in some cases there just isn’t any family. there are strict health and safety rules about what we can/can’t do with these graves; you may have noticed that where a grave is sinking and the headstone is unsafe, then we lay it fl at. Council has decided that in the case of neglected graves we will address overgrowth and weeds and generally try to make them look a little bit better.so what would you like to see in

our cemetery? Any ideas – please let us know; if achievable, we will incorporate them into our cemetery improvement plan.

Grass Cutting: A Conundrum

harworth and Bircotes town Council cuts grass on land that is ours,

Staff. i would like to congratulate Barry heaton who, after 14 years of service, has opted for a life of retirement. We wish him well and hope he enjoys his new lifestyle; i’m sure on cold, wet mornings he will relish the thought of not having to turn out and face the ravages of our weather.

Improving theCemeteryWe often get complimented on the appearance of our cemetery, but Council has decided to try and address a few problem areas.

• Paths. regular visitors will be aware that two sections of paths have been lifted in the last cemetery section, thus creating more spaces for graves and cremation plots. Apologies to those who were inconvenienced that day, but we hope you understand the need for the J.C.B. and skip.

• Grass Cutting. We now have a sit-on mower for the cemetery that also collects grass as it cuts. this is great for the long, level section that runs parallel with Bawtry road/Devonshire road, but it can’t be used in all sections of the older part of the cemetery – in some parts the spaces between the graves are just too narrow. to keep the grass short

i am confi dent this problem will not occur again, and apologies to all who told us about their concerns, and to those who suff ered in silence.Q. Why don’t we have a mower that

collects the grass as it cuts?A. Because the regular weekly yield of

cut grass would fi ll two skips!

Road SweepingYou may have noticed a large yellow road sweeper trundling round our streets in June. this was not a District Council sweeper, but one from a private company, and it cost £250 to sweep all the streets in our town. the vehicle collected 13 tons of rubbish!

Why am i telling you this? Because, despite repeated requests to District for more sweeps, and requests for all streets to be cleaned at some time in the year, nothing ever changes. When we complain we are told the service is ‘being reviewed’. in utter frustration we took matters into our own hands and authorised a thorough clean from a diff erent service provider.

What Else To Report?• Work has begun in earnest on the

Neighbourhood Plan. A website has to be developed, a steering group has to be established and expert advice and guidance acquired, plus input is needed from B.D.C. Planners; fortunately this Council has applied for a grant to cover these costs. this is going to be a complicated and lengthy project, but the most important part is consulting with residents; you will be advised on when and how this will happen.

• Nottinghamshire County Council highways have agreed the implementation of No PArKiNG areas on main street and Church lane. the plans can be viewed in the library.

Maisy’sfundraising success!

on Tuesday 4th June Harworth and Bircotes Parent Forum offi -cially took over ownership of a planter on the Bircotes Library site to be used as a community garden. The planters have been funded by the Harworth Partnership but partners from various organisations have ensured this project got off the ground and acts as the springboard for other commu-nity groups in the area to start their own garden projects.

Families from the Children’s Centre will use the planters to plant vegetables, fl owers and a sensory patch for children with additional needs. Working with the library it will become an area for learning and play and it is hoped this will be the fi rst of many other gardening projects as harworth and Bircotes move towards entering the east midlands in Bloom competition.
