MASS INTENTIONS FR. RON'S RAMBLINGS (Continued from page 1)

The annual Strawberry Festival is perhaps a major reason we have such a strong parish community at St. Isidore. For years, dedicated parishioners have worked very closely together to plan and execute the best parish festival around! I love how family-friendly our festival is! This year’s festival was no exception! Aided by very good weather, and by the addition of several different events, I believe the festival was more fun and family-centered than ever. We thank our Festival Committee - which works throughout the entire year - and the nearly seven hundred volunteers who worked the festival, and all who attended. We hope you are able to join us for 9:00 Mass this Tuesday as we celebrate Independence Day, and call down God’s blessing on our nation. In these times, above all, we need to acknowledge our dependence on God and on each other as we safeguard our freedoms and extend them to all who come to us.Happy 4th of July!Fr. Ron Victor

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!!Our Summer Blood Drive is Aug. 6, 2017.

13th Sunday in Ordinary TimeToday’s readings are about welcoming. People in the Bible like to feel welcomed just as much as we do today. Welcoming someone into the home in Bible times was not only hospitality, it was a sacred obligation. Our first story from 2 Kings is about the prophet Elisha. He often visited Shunem so a wealthy woman asked her husband if they could construct a room on the roof for him. Such a room sounds peculiar to us but it was really the place of honor because it was the coolest and quietest. Elisha was grateful for the welcome and promised the woman, who had no children, that she would have a baby at that time the next year. It is exactly the same story of welcome that we read when Abram welcomed the angels to his tent. Sarai would have a baby at that time next year. The Second Reading from Romans is the epistle reading at the Easter Vigil. It tells of the welcome we receive when we are baptized into the body of Christ. We die with Christ but we rise to eternal life in the water. That is a welcome that never expires.Jesus tells us today that whoever receives a believer receives him. Whoever welcomes a believer also welcomes him. The simplest action like offering a drink of water is a welcome. Think about how much you appreciate a drink of water that someone offers when you are thirsty. Prophets like Elisha are welcomed because of their message. Other believers are welcomed because they are faithful. Anyone who welcomes them will be rewarded in heaven. What’s in it for us? We are a welcoming parish. We hear that from visitors all the time. We congratulate you for the welcome you extended to visitors last week at the festival. I met two ladies who were visiting from Ohio and had nothing but good things to say about our worship. Our FIT team welcomes people at the door. We need more volunteers for that welcoming ministry. A smile or a simple “good morning” to the people next to you at Mass is welcoming. So keep up the good work. Your reward will be great in heaven.

Join us on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Resource Center.

July Dates: July 12 and 26

Join F.I.T. (First Impressions Team)! Contact the parish office to volunteer to help welcome your fellow parishioners and guests.

Tips for Healthy GrillingSummer time often means moving our cooking outdoors! Here are a few tips to keep those summer cook outs safe and delicious:• Keep your grill clean by scrubbing it before and after each use. Avoid using

a wire brush, which may lose bristles on the grill and find their way into your food.

• Marinate meat and poultry to help reduce carcinogens that form when they cook on the grill

• Turn meat over at the right time so it doesn’t char and it flips easy without sticking. Move meat away from flare ups

• Cut off charred or burnt portions of grilled food. The more char there is, the more cancer-causing compounds there are

• Cook ground beef to 160°, red meats to 145°, pork to 160° and poultry to 165° to kill E. Coli bacteria

• The faster foods are cooked, the less likely they are to char• Cut meat in uniform size pieces. Smaller pieces cook quicker• Try grilled pizza as a main dish, or grilled vegetables as a side dish, and grilled

fruit as dessert!Blessings,HeatherSource: St. John Faith and Health, May-June 2017

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL [email protected] DEACON BILL [email protected]

Addictions written June 13, 2017[Note: I am not a health care provider, nor an expert in dealing with problems of addictions. I have some training, some experience dealing with addicts, and some education on the matter, but I am not a qualified expert.]I have never given the “problem of addiction” much thought until lately. Early in June, I got a mailing from the Michigan Catholic Conference outlining the crisis of Opiate Addictions in Michigan and the entire United States. Since then, AARP (June Bulletin) has published an article concerning the nation-wide magnitude of the problem of addictions and substance abuse in the United States – by older men and women! In my ignorance, I simply presumed that the “Drug Culture” was uniquely made up of a much younger generation. [Boy, was I naive!!] These two articles prompted me to begin a bit more research into the problems of addiction, and some possible solutions we, as Christians, ought to consider.Growing up as a white middle class American, whose parents drank less than occasionally and only smoked cigarettes (the socially accepted addiction), I thought “addicts” were solely relegated to social outcasts, living in dark alleys, stabbing themselves with needles. Marijuana - the “gateway” to heroin - and cocaine were not popular drugs of choice until the 1960’s. Now, I am not so naive. Addictions are not restricted to any culture, age group, or economic standing. And, I believe from what I have read, the new “gateway” drug is the prescribed pain medication. Yes, I still believe that marijuana is a gateway into the “drug culture”, alcoholism is still a major killer, and cocaine and heroin are even more dangerous today than thirty years ago. I still believe also that, for the most part, the initial introduction to these “drugs of choice” are born from a sense of curiosity, and the (foolish) belief that: I can handle it. I won’t let it control me. A ridiculous - but true - story is about a man who was purposely trying to become an alcoholic, so that he could “recover”, and then help other alcoholics recover. He under-estimated the tremendous power of addiction. The tremendous POWER of addiction is the center of this article. Not being a health care professional, only experiencing those addicted to some substance on a very limited scale, and only some exposure to the clinical realities of the addictions; not being an alcoholic (recovering or not), I cannot offer first-hand advice to anyone. However, I believe that many people have very little appreciation for the power of some substance to control a person’s ability to just say “no”. Years ago, in a class I was taking to become a resource person and referral person for substance abusers, an abuser of cocaine tried to explain the “high” as being something like ten times the power of an orgasm. O Kay, now, give that up! The man who thought he could simply “will” himself out of alcoholism to work with other alcoholics was worse than naive, he was plain foolish. (The person conducting the class we were taking recommended that he visit a counselor ASAP, he needed help.)

To be continued

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeIn today’s Gospel hear Jesus tell us: “Whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple—Amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.”This week, know that you will bring hope to the poor by your gift to our St. Vincent de Paul conference.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!July 4th is also the feast of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. Born in 1901, he became a SVDP member at age 17. Pier Giorgio said, “Jesus visits me every morning in Holy Communion. A Summer Opportunity Planned for You Three internationally-known speakers will be in our area this August just for you in the conference, “An Era of Change or a Change of Era?” Pope Francis has challenged us: "One could say that today we are not living an era of change but a change of era.” Our three speakers (Richard Gaillardetz, Ph.D., Margaret Nutting Ralph, Pd.D. and Fr. Howard Gray, SJ, Ph.D.) – each from their own reflection and experience – will help us to explore this reality that Pope Francis has presented to us. The daytime offerings (August 7-9) will take place at St. Isidore Parish, Macomb. For the full schedule and registration information, go to www.wearethechurchconferences.com.

Two evening opportunities (free will offering) will also take place:

“Wrestling with the Faith: The Demands of Mature Discipleship in a Secular Age”with Richard Gaillardetz, Ph.D.

at St. Isidore Parish, Macomb on Monday, August 7th (7:00 pm)

Mature Christian belief has never been more difficult than it is today. This presentation will reflect on the need to find a middle way between facile obedience and casual regard for

the received faith of the church. “Be Not Afraid: I Am With You Always”

With Margaret Nutting Ralph, Ph.D.at St. Margaret of Scotland Parish, St. Clair Shores on

Tuesday, August 8th (7:00 pm)An unwillingness to embrace change is often caused by fear.

In this session we will learn how to dispel fear by exploring the many ways in which the risen Christ remains in our midst.

For complete information, see www.wearethechurchconferences.com.Registration is required for the daytime sessions; the evening sessions are walk-in with free-will offerings.

AUSTIN CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOLAustin in Action: Student Earns International Recognition & Award

When Christian Spearman, ’19 wrote his essay for this year’s contest, he had no idea that his essay from last year had earned him $100 and recognition as a runner-up at the international level in the Catholic Citizenship Essay Contest sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. “My mom told me she looked up the contest online and there was my name,” said Christian. School administration worked with the local Council at St. Kieran’s (#13983) to discover

what happened to Christian’s award. Two weeks later and Christian’s award was found and presented to him in front of the entire school. “We are extremely proud of Christian for his hard work,” said Principal Mrs. Coppens. Coppens and, Ron Koscierzynski, former Grand Knight at #13983, told students that Christian’s winning proves that these contests do go further and can reap rewards. “I don’t know if Michigan has ever had an International Level winner or runner-up, but I do know it’s a first for our council,” said Ron. Austin students participate in the contest each year and also earn local recognition in the contest before advancing on to state and international judging. Austin in Action is a weekly column focusing on the events and students at Austin Catholic High School.

Congratulations to the following students from St. Isidore who attend Regina High School, who have earned Honor Roll status for this quarter's marking.
