Sugar causes cavities.Sugar by itself does not cause cavities, it is the acid produced by cavity-causing bacteria. You can help prevent cavities by brushing twice a day, fl ossing daily and visiting your dentist regularly.
If I’m not having any pain in my mouth, there’s no need to see a dentist.Scheduling regular dental visits helps prevent tooth problems before they happen. By the time you are in noticeable pain it may be too late to treat a cavity or gum disease.

Weekend full of fun on the
docketPatrick Larkin
news editor
With the East Side’s long-time tradition hit-ting its stride again, neighbors will gather for fall fun and merriment the weekend of Sept. 18 through 20.
At noon, Payne Ave-nue’s golden commercial stretch will be closed off to make way for a 60-group parade on Sat-urday, Sept. 19.
Floats, fire engines, bands and classic cars will dazzle onlookers, and festivities galore will follow suit: there’s seven post-parade parties to go to, including an interna-tional festival, a market, a family festival, a Har-vest Fest reception, and more.
Only a few years ago, the festival was at a lull, and didn’t even have a

photo courtesy of the Minnesota Historical SocietyIn 1932 Harvest Fest was a huge event along Payne Avenue, and the avenue was decorated in colorful ban-ners. The lively atmosphere of Harvest Fests of lore looks to be making a comeback.
Harvest Fest momentum buildsfull-fledged parade. Now, it’s back in full swing.
Tracy Nelson, one of the parade’s organizers, says it reflects the com-mercial renaissance of Payne Avenue — with new shops abounding on the commercial strip, momentum seems to be building for the once sleepy corridor.
“We’re happy to see it grow again,” said Tracy Nelson, one of the event organizers. “We have more participation by the businesses, by neigh-borhood groups and organizations. We’re big-ger!”
E m p h a s i z i n g t h a t growth, Harvest Fest weekend will kick off Fri-day, Sept. 18, and show the neighborhood what East Side pride means. Friday night features the Harvest Fest button specials, where people who’ve bought buttons can go to find special bar-gains at restaurants and retailers alike. The but-tons can be found at doz-ens of local shops.
The Minnesota Music Café will host the band Westside, while nearby at Mounds Park Sports Bar, James Zachary Band will perform. At Govenor’s Fine Food and Drink on Arcade, a variety of specials await anyone in possession of a Harvest Fest button.

the Third Annual Lions Scouts Pancake Break-fast, runs from 8 to 11 a.m. and will help East Siders fill up before the parade.
Then, come noontime, the classic fanfare of the parade will make its way down Payne Avenue.
The parade will launch at noon sharp, starting on Rose Avenue, just south of the Arlington Hills Community Cen-ter. The 10-block parade will feature everything from fire trucks and clas-sic cars to Budget Tow-ing’s Mike the monkey riding in a Hummer! In all, there are expected to be 65 different floats and presentations marching down the street.
Making a comeback, a parade announcer will be narrating the whole thing.
Grand marshal’s honorThis year ’s parade
grand marshal is a special one — Ed Bertges, owner of Schwietz Saloon and Eatery. He was nomi-nated after a heartfelt let-ter from a fellow Payne Avenue business owner won the hearts of the Harvest Fest parade com-mittee.
Bertges was diagnosed with stomach cancer shortly after achieving his dream of reopening the old Saloon, which had been vacant. Bert-ges restored the bar, and fought for years to get the proper licensing.
Now, in the midst of a battle with cancer, being the marshal gives a little bit of light to his life.
He’s honored to be a part of the parade, and a part of the East Side. He’ll ride in the parade in a Corvette convertible from Dave’s Auto Body.
Post-parade fun!The parade will con-
clude at Wells Street, just north of Phalen Boulevard, and lead into the many vibrant post-parade events.
There’s the Harvest International Festival, sponsored by LeMura Buena Radio 107.5 FM — the festival will take place at Payne and Agu-irre Street, and will fea-ture dance performances, a wide variety of food, and a children’s play area.
Up the street a bit, the Salvation Army is hosting its Harvest Fest Market-place — the marketplace includes numerous ven-dors selling wares of all sorts, as well as a carni-val, and a 3-on-3 basket-ball tournament. For pre-registration, contact Jon-tae Koonkaew at [email protected]. The Salvation Army event runs from 2 to 5 p.m.
Still further up the street at the Arlington Hills Community Center, there will be a family fes-tival featuring games and food.
Over on Arcade Street, M & H Gas Station will host its traditional barbe-cue party in the parking lot. The event runs from 2 p.m. until the food runs out.
Food FestAlso going on Saturday
is the Urban Oasis Food Fest and 5K — the race starts at Indian Mounds Regional Park at 10 a.m., with an awards ceremony at 11 a.m.
The festivities con-tinue throughout the day, including a food fes-tival from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and musical per-formances by bluegrass band the May North, the Irish band Barra, a teen jazz and funk trio called Jerry the Jazz Jiraffe, a n d a n A f ro L a t i n jazz band called Chico Chavez.
The food fest is free and open to all ages. The

From roar to murmur to roar
In the last decade, the festival’s momentum had begun to dwindle and funding was drying up.
Little by little, things were cut out, from wan-ing business participa-tion, to the paring down of the parade, to the cut-ting of various activities.
Prior to last year, the last full-scale parade was in 2007.
In its place were vari-ous smaller celebrations, including the Payne

Arcade Business Association Festival, and Mexican Inde-pendence Day celebrations.
The most boiled-down ver-sion of Harvest Fest might have been in 2012, when just a couple of blocks were part of the event and attendance was around 400 people.
But now, things are shaping up, and organizers are expect-ing thousands. And, the whole stretch of Payne from Maryland down to Phalen Boulevard will be shut off for the event.
Good ol’ timesHarvest Fest was once a shim-
mering beacon on the East Side. For years it was one of the largest parades in town, and dated back as early as 1906.
According to Ann DeJoy from the East Side Neighbor-hood Development Company, the festival was a big part of the East Side’s identity for much of the 20th century. East Siders
would come out in droves and pack Payne Avenue from Mary-land Avenue all the way down to where Phalen Boulevard now sits.
It was also a feeder for the St. Paul Winter Carnival, she said. The East Side was the “East
Winds” of the city for the Win-ter Carnival — Harvest Fest would have a queen, who would go on to compete for the title of “Queen of Snows,” she said.
DeJoy said the event encom-passed the whole East Side, with a parade featuring marching
bands from Harding and John-son high schools, a cornucopia of neighborhood groups - civic orga-nizations, non-profits, churches, the Lioní’s Club - and businesses.
“It really was an all-encom-passing, all-inclusive event,” she said.
And with 2015’s momentum, Harvest Fest looks to be growing into the bustling celebration of lore.
