“Social entrepreneurs are not content just to give a fish, or teach how to fish. They will not rest until they have revolutionalized the fishing industry”

–Bill Drayton, CEO, chair, and founder of Ashoka

The Issue

China’s impressive rise within the global economic landscape has ushered in a new era of entrepreneurship. However, though widespread in the West, social entrepreneurship has not reached the same level of prominence in China. With over 70% of the population in the range of 15-65 years old, we believe that there are ample opportunities for social entrepreneurship to develop, creating even more jobs for the rising generation of the work force. The Harvard China Action for Tomorrow Venture (Harvard ATVenture) competition aims to provide emerging Chinese innovators with a unique opportunity to apply their entrepreneurial spirit to social concerns, while help continuing the strong growth in its domestic economy.

Our Vision

As China is becoming increasingly important in the global economic stage, we want to help shape the new generation of social entrepreneurs who are capable of helping to improve the society for all.

Our Mission

Our goal through this competition is to identify young, ambitious social entrepreneurs who are passionate about finding solutions to existing problems. Our conference will prepare those creative individuals with the leadership and business skill sets that they need to carry out their plans through four days of intensive workshops. Finally, we will give them a chance to test their knowledge in the real business world by offering them the opportunities to appeal their proposals in front of the public as well as corporate sponsors.

Our Impact

By increasing the knowledge and skill sets of our candidates, we believe that by the end of the conference, our participants will be able to perfect their proposals and raise the capital they need to execute their projects. Through the competition, we will be nurturing the next generation of leaders for social change.

Our History HAUSCR the organization is the perfect example of an entrepreneurial product: a group of 4 college freshmen with an idea getting together to start something grand to bridge the gap between China and US relations. Thus, entrepreneurial spirit runs in the veins of the organization. Over the last couple of years, HAUSCR has attempted to implement this entrepreneurial aspect through the implementation of the Action for Tomorrow Venture (ATVenture) Program during our high school program, HSYLC, in which we provided a 10-day workshop to introduce students to the idea of social entrepreneurship. Due to its past success in HSYLC, HAUSCR has decided to expand the ATVenture program into a separate competition for Chinese college students to spread the entrepreneurial spirit to the next generation of China’s leaders. The Program By establishing the first competition at the Harvard campus, we will be able to bring finalists in contact with distinguished speakers, entrepreneurs, and business professionals, in a final conference that will result in the implementation of a winning proposal. Through this new competition, we are spreading the entrepreneurial spirit, a founding principle of HAUSCR, to Chinese college students. This strong push for entrepreneurship would provide the perfect platform for igniting up-and-coming ideas in the Asian emerging markets. Distinctiveness of ATVenture As one of the fastest developing countries today, China provides more potential for social entrepreneurs than most other parts of the world. Unfortunately, many potential entrepreneurs are discouraged from stepping into the Chinese market because of the lack of large-scale social entrepreneurial opportunity in China. Although entrepreneurship competitions are present in China, they are very sparse compared to the opportunities in the US and very under represented. Since social entrepreneurship has not yet caught on in China, our entry as the premier social entrepreneurship competition for Chinese college students will be an impactful one. Moreover, in addition to offering enough seed money to fully implement a winning proposal, we also offer opportunities to outstanding teams to network and connect with top Asian angel investors so that they may increase their chances of seeking funding. In addition we are also distinguishing ourselves as the first college to specifically hold an entrepreneurial competition for Chinese college students. However, this would not be an entirely new venture since we have experience implementing ATVenture as a subcomponent of the HSYLC summit for the three previous three summers. With much infrastructure already set, we want to nationalize the program so that college students from all over China can fully participate in proposing business

plans that will challenge their creativity and lead to ventures that may change shape the Chinese business market. What We Have to Offer As previously stated, nationalizing ATVenture is not a brand new venture but an effort supported fully by a pillars of networks across China and the US. Through the achievements of HAUSCR and its substituent programs, we already possess numerous HSYLC alumni and network connections within China, many of whom are attending the most prestigious schools both in China and abroad, including Harvard. Moreover, we are able to leverage our previous connection with Harvard Professors and Harvard Business School staff to involve them in the conference as mentors, speakers, and case workshop leaders, to provide a very MBA-styled training from the best business school in the world. In terms of awards, the winning team will be given seed money to implement their business proposal into an operational venture. In addition, the winning team and other outstanding teams may be given the opportunity to network and dine privately with top Asian angel investors to further help pitch their ideas. The Harvard College Association for US-China Relations (HAUSCR) is a student-run organization committed to bridging the gap between the United States and China through a number of unique programs. Mission

The Harvard College Association for US-China Relations (HAUSCR) promotes the exchange of ideas and opportunities between Harvard College students and students from all across China. Its goal is to foster the qualities of Leadership, Scholarship, Citizenship, and Entrepreneurship in the students of both countries through a synergistic combination of education, advocacy, and cultural dialogue.

History

HAUSCR is an official organization of Harvard College and is a registered 501(c)3 federal nonprofit organization. Its flagship program, the Harvard AUSCR Summit for Young Leaders in China (HSYLC), launched in the summer of 2006. HSYLC 2006, sponsored by the Goldman Sachs Foundation and American Airlines, recruited 37 Harvard undergraduates to create and teach individualized curricula at a sister school in Shanghai. The program received extensive media attention across China, bringing together approximately 300 high school students from an applicant pool of thousands to participate in this one-of-a-kind program.

Since 2006, HAUSCR has expanded its summer program each year to include a creative entrepreneurial program, Action for Tomorrow Venture (ATVenture), and continues to attract influential speakers from around the world. In addition, in 2008, HAUSCR successfully launched its first large-scale exchange program in the United States, bringing keynote speakers, including Jet Li, to Harvard’s campus. Recently, HAUSCR has successfully expanded its programs in the United States, and it looks forward to holding the sixth annual HSYLC in Beijing and Shanghai this summer.
