Introduction to Sociology

This course examines the nature of sociology and ways in which sociologists go about their work. Students will examine sociology as a distinctive perspective on human behavior and the links between personal experience and wider social forces while covering the main fields of the discipline.

The class is taught by Assistant Professor of Sociology Dr. Sarah Whiteford, who has been with Hartwick since 2010. Originally from Western Kentucky, Whiteford received her B.S. in sociology and B.A. in psychology from Lambuth University in Jackson, TN. She went on to receive a master’s degree in Social Science Research from Florida State University in 2003 before beginning

her doctoral work at the University of Tennessee. Though she has been teaching sociology for eight years, her personal research interests lie in the areas of criminology, and she is the coordinator of the criminal justice minor.

Introduction to College Composition

In Introduction to College Composition, students will gain experience writing in the major rhetorical modes, including description, argument, comparison and contrast, and research. Emphasis will be placed on revision as students work closely with tutors and the instructor to improve the content, grammar, and style of their work. Students will also gain experience reading and interpreting a variety of texts and learn strategies for participating in college-level discussions.

The class is taught by Carolyn Cooper, who has taught reading and writing at the secondary and college level for 15 years. She has a B.A. from Middlebury College and a master’s degree in education from Harvard University.

Many highly successful, intelligent men and women have struggled through high school. Some understand the mate-rial, but freeze when it comes time for a test. Others know what they want to say, but have trouble putting the words on that blank sheet of paper. If you’re one of these students, you’re not alone.

Some of our greatest thinkers and most successful people have experienced similar struggles: John F. Kennedy, Albert Einstein, Agatha Christie, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, to name a few. They were all smart and highly motivated, they just needed some extra support — and a plan. That’s where SOAR, or Start Out Academics Right, comes in.

SOAR is a five-week summer program featuring credit-bearing college coursework. SOAR students use the course-work they’ve completed over the summer to reduce their course load in the fall, taking some of the pressure off. With committed staff and peer leaders, you will discover your own academic and personal strengths and abilities.

And their academic support continues right through their first year at Hartwick. SOAR is designed with one purpose in mind: your academic success. Our SOAR students have achieved that kind of success — and so can you.

Start Out Academics Right.

People are talking.Get familiar. “Not only did SOAR help improve my work and study habits from high school, but I got a chance to become familiar with most of the campus and where my fall semester classes would be. My professors for my SOAR classes were excellent and I could tell they truly cared about getting us ready to take on college. I also met some fantastic people in the SOAR group who I still enjoy talking and hanging out with today.”

Jared Babinec ’16Little Falls, NY

SOAR is supportive. “I would recommend SOAR to everybody. It was very supportive, which is what I needed. I got a taste of the college workload, I got familiar with the campus, I learned how to handle the stress, and I formed great relationships with the other students in SOAR. We stick together even now. I was set up to succeed because of SOAR.”

Julie Moore ’15Scarsdale, NY

They want studentsto succeed.“SOAR was very good for my son, Jared. It really helped get him prepared. We found that everyone involved with the program was so helpful. They were very caring and really wanted the students to succeed. When he started the fall semester he felt so confident and inspired, I couldn’t recommend the program more highly.”
