Newsletter No. 24 13 th August, 2019 In This Issue: Congratulations Hart Art 2019 Cabrini Hospital and Hartwell Congratulations National Champion Working Bee Reminders Notices Recently Sent Home Dear Parents, What a wonderful event Hart Art 2019 was! It was lovely to see so many students, parents and our neighbours talking about the art show. Whether this was the quality of the artwork for exhibition and sale, the great fun that was had at the opening Gala Night or the family events on Saturday. Whilst we are still working out sales and fundraising, the success of this show is measured by participation and enthusiasm. Hart Art has always been for our community and a way for us to celebrate the Arts you certainly cannot underestimate the value of a community event and this certainly was a terrific success for so many reasons. A huge thank you to everyone (parents and students) who supported the show during the week these are: our sponsors, our artists, Georgie Howarth and Stacey Kujawa for running children’s workshops, Chris Howell for coordinating the BBQ, Jenny Russell-Rockcliff for coordinating the café, Nancy Manders for being a superb publicity coordinator and Clare Hyland and Deb Tait for providing us with lovely musical entertainment on Saturday. In particular, I would like to acknowledge and thank Pip Turner, Jude Insole, Andrea Blake, Angela Long and Connie Macauley as the Hart Art 2019 Committee. They worked tirelessly to organize and co-ordinate this event and should be very proud of their combined achievements in creating a very successful show. CABRINI HOSPITAL and HARTWELL Thank you to a couple of our parents for alerting us to an opportunity to assist our families at Cabrini Hospital in Malvern. We have entered into an agreement that allows any Hartwell family to receive a 50% discount should you require medical treatment in an emergency. The discounted rate is $205 (8 am-6 pm weekdays) and $240 (6 pm-8 am weekdays and all weekend), (subject to change). Perth. Ben’s team played ten games, winning every one. This is an incredible achievement and we congratulate Ben on being part of such a prestigious Victorian team. PE UPDATE SENIOR ALL STARS HOOP TIME Congratulations to our Senior All Star Hoop Time teams who competed in the Glen Iris District Day last Thursday. It was a big day of competition with eight schools participating. The results were super impressive with our Boys’ A and B teams finishing in third place. Our Girls’ A team finished in fourth position. The performance of the day belonged to our Girls’ B team who made it all the way to the Grand Final taking on Camberwell South PS. In similar fashion to our Junior Future Stars Grand Final, it was another nail biter! The match was drawn at full time and after three minutes of extra time, the scores were still all tied up. The game was decided in a penalty shootout with each team having five shots at the free throw line. Our girls were strong and resilient, unfortunately going down 5 to 3 in the shootout. They should be congratulated on such a brilliant effort.

A sincere thank you to our coaches: EJ Hind’s father Andrew, Will Howard’s father Marc, Lucinda Hanrahan’s father Matt and Lizzie Stockdale’s big brother Nick. We are very fortunate to have such great support from our Hartwell Families. Thank you to the parents who assisted with scoring and cheered on the teams. We are looking forward to another big day this Wednesday as our Senior Future Stars are in action. GO HARTWELL! YEAR 3 SWIMMING PROGRAM A reminder the Year 3 Swimming program is underway and the group will swim on the following dates: Monday 12th August, Tuesday 13th August, Thursday 15th August, Friday 16th August (new date), Monday 19th August, Tuesday 20th August, Wednesday 21st August and Friday 23rd August. GYMNASTICS VICTORIA INTERSCHOOLS COMPETITION Our team of 21 gymnasts has been training effectively and with much enthusiasm, and they will compete next Tuesday in the Victorian Interschools competition to be held at Cranbourne. Congratulations to our Captains Aimee T. (S6M) and Johie G. (S6O) who have been supporting their younger chargers wonderfully. A reminder we have a training session at BUGS this Saturday 17th August from 3pm-5pm for those who can make it. GO HARTWELL! VICTORIAN INTERSCHOOL SNOWSPORTS Best wishes to our Snowsports team who will be heading to Mt. Buller next weekend with their families, to compete in the Victorian Interschools Competition. Good luck to Penny M. (S6C), Alice S. (M4G), Finn L. (S6M), Lockie L. (S6O) and Edward L. (J2K) who will all take on the Giant Slalom and Skier X events. Thank you to the parents of these students for their support of the Snowsports program. I am sure it will be a great time in the snow! HPS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL – THURSDAY 22ND AUGUST Less than two weeks now until our much anticipated House Athletics Carnival. Thank you to those families who have completed the payment and permission on the Qkr app. If you are yet to complete these details, could you please do so asap. This will save me an enormous amount of time following up permission for children to attend this event. Alternatively, you can call by the office and see one of our wonderful office staff. I still have room for more parents to assist! I would really appreciate your help with measuring the field events. No athletics experience is required and it is a great way to support your child, be a part of the action and enjoy the Hartwell spirit. We cannot run such a big event without parent support. Please email me if you can assist – even for part of the day. Remember to

remind your children that this day is about having fun, doing your own personal best and having a go at new events. The ‘athletes’ have been training hard and are very well prepared. I am looking forward to a sensational day. Athletes should dress in house colours (suitable athletics attire) and wear their runners. ATHS RUNNING TRAINING – YEAR 3-6 STUDENTS We will have our last hit out this Friday morning before our Aths Carnival. Again, it is great to have so many teachers coming along. Thanks also to parent and the running man Nick Ward (Maddie and Ruben’s dad) for his support at training. His encouragement of the kids is endless and he always ensures they get the best out of themselves. Yr. 3-6 students will train again this Friday morning at Lynden Park at 8am. Well done to all students on a great week last week in testing weather conditions. We did not miss a beat in PE with everyone showing great optimism, enthusiasm and resilience. Thank you! Looking forward to another great week. Jo Bayes PE & Sport Co-ordinator [email protected]

SCIENCE UPDATE It’s all systems go for Science at Hartwell in Term Three. Our learning communities are inquiring into different aspects of STEAM, leading up to our STEAM-themed Open Night on Thursday 12 September. I can’t wait to see the final presentations of the students’ inquiry journeys this term. In our specialist science lessons, we are very excited that the Preps have begun their formal science sessions. They are learning all about how to ask questions, make predictions, conduct simple tests and share their observations in different ways. Year Twos have investigated how sound is made and how it travels. They conducted tests to feel the vibrations of a metal nut inside a balloon and observed how the vibrations from a drum can make small objects – such as sprinkles - move. Years 3 and 4 students are examining solids and liquids, thinking about how the behaviour of their molecules changes with the addition or removal of heat. They are looking forward to learning how to take scientific measurements using different tools, such as scales and different kinds of thermometers. Years 5 and 6 have begun learning about microorganisms of different kinds. We commenced with yeast, investigating how it lives and what conditions allow it to grow the most. Students will soon be observing the organisms found in water from different places. If you could collect and label a jar of water from somewhere interesting to send into school for the investigation that would be greatly appreciated!

Finally, National Science Week here. Running until August18th , National Science Week will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing and the missions that are being planned for the future. Events and information can be found on the official website: https://www.scienceweek.net.au/

Emily Durham Science Teacher FOOD FROM THE HART 2019–School Community Recipe Book The recipe book committee wants to thank all the parents, students and teachers who have sent in their recipes – we’ve received lots of delicious contributions! There are still empty pages though, so we hope more families and teachers will send in their recipes too. We ask that you please use the template on the school website and put the section in the subject as this makes our job so much easier. Just a reminder that we can only add drawings from the children, not photos, and the drawings need to be in black and white. Thanks! Pip Turner & Nat Langlands Assistant Principal

Word of the Week at Hartwell! ‘Word of the Week’ is running extremely successfully across the school. Each week, the students will have a particular word that is unique to their year level that they have to try and use during the week in their speaking and writing. Some of the teams will have a fortnightly ‘Word of the Week’ so that they can have more opportunity to unpack their words on a deeper level e.g. investigating parts of speech and using the words in a range of different contexts. Each week, there will be a list of all the ‘Words of the Week’ across the school in this newsletter. It would be great to discuss the ‘Word of the Week’ with your child at home and possibly use it in conversation or a piece of writing.

Why choose cabrini Emergency department (Ed)?

• The 50% discount offer applies to the attendance fee only, and does not apply to any further out of pocket expenses such as hospital admission, X-rays or pathology (blood tests).

• Cabrini is a private, Catholic, not-for-profit healthcare service that does not rely on funding from government or the Catholic Church. Therefore, Cabrini must charge fees for emergency medical care. Unfortunately health insurers do not cover emergency attendances, so Cabrini relies on these fees to cover our costs.
