Welcome

Set in 180 acres of Hertfordshire countryside, Hartsbourne Golf and

Country Club is one of the most prestigious private members clubs in

the south east of England.

The courses were first laid out in 1922 by the legendary F.G.Hawtree

and J.H.Taylor and today Hartsbourne is still home to 27 holes of golf

that provide an invigorating and challenging examination of your golf

skills, yet are fair and playable for golfers of all abilities. The course is

kept in outstanding condition all year round by the dedicated green

keeping staff for both members and visitors to enjoy.

As well as offering two demanding but enjoyable courses, we also have

a long history of successfully hosting golf societies, private functions,

lunches, weddings, golf days, conferences and events.

We provide everything that a golfer would expect at a well-established

club. The Pro Shop stocks a full range of equipment and clothing while

expert tuition and extensive practice areas offer the opportunity to

work on your game and lower your handicap.

History

As well as fine facilities, Hartsbourne boasts a rich historical past,

however, records suggest that Hartsbourne was not always the warm,

welcoming venue it is today.

In the mid-18th century, the then coach house was known as ‘The

Thieves Kitchen’, a nod to the owner’s friendly relationship with

notorious highwayman Dick Turpin.

Having been a hideout for criminals, the early 19th century saw

Hartsbourne fall into more savoury hands. Hartsbourne Manor-Place

was the family seat of Baronet Sir Thomas Thompson who, having

served with the great Admiral at the battles of Nile and Copenhagen,

was one of Horatio Nelson’s most trusted allies.

A more glamorous period followed in the early 20th century as

Hartsbourne Manor became the country residence of American actress

Maxine Elliott. Counting King Edward VII as one of her most adoring

fans, the beautiful socialite turned Hartsbourne into something of a

party venue until she left in 1920.

Winston Churchill, Lord Birkenhead and financier Pierpoint Morgan

were all said to have been hosted at Hartsbourne, as well as Ms Elliott’s

fiancé; the multiple Wimbledon champion Captain Tony Wilding, who

later died in action during World War One.


The Hartsbourne golf courses were first laid out in 1922 by the

legendary F.G.Hawtree with his new business partner of the time, the

five-time Open Champion J.H.Taylor.

Using their interest in the new science of green keeping and pioneering

ideas in bunker construction, they designed 27 characteristically

individual holes that nestle effortlessly into the natural parkland.

The partnership went on to design many more great courses during the

inter-war years including the redevelopment of Royal Birkdale in 1932;

in fact, the Hawtree dynasty is now the longest continuous practice in

golf course architecture.

When the Wembley Golf Club were evicted from their land to make

room for a certain twin-towered stadium, they made their new home at

Hartsbourne in 1928 before the outbreak of war reignited the manor’s

military connection. The RAF commandeered Hartsbourne Manor in

1940 to house the officers stationed at nearby Bentley Priory – the

intelligence hub of Britain’s airborne defence during World War Two.

After the war, the club was purchased by Mr CJ Stillitz, the founder of

the present club, who gave us our current name, Hartsbourne Golf and

Country Club.

History Continued

To meet the demands and expectations of today’s golfer, thoughtful

improvements have taken place over the years by extending the

drainage network, remodelling the streams that meander their way

through the estate and the introduction of a state of the art irrigation

system. These works coupled with the diligent professionalism of our

green keepers mean the courses are presented in wonderful condition

throughout the year.

Many famous golfers have played at Hartsbourne; in 1954 Dai Rees won

the Goray Championship here when he played with young Peter Allis.

Bernard and Geoff Hunt, the only brothers ever to represent Great

Britain in the same Ryder Cup team, played on the professional circuit

in the 50s, 60s and 70s whilst being based at Hartsbourne Country

Club. Our challenging nine-hole course, now named ‘The Hunt Course’,

continues their family’s long-standing association with Hartsbourne.


About the Course

Situated on the county borders of Hertfordshire and Middlesex, the

two courses at Hartsbourne Golf and Country Club provide a fine

and fair challenge to golfers of all abilities.

Set over 180 acres of beautifully manicured and mature parkland, the

courses are kept in immaculate condition all year round thanks to the

wonderful work of our green keeping staff.

The nine-hole Hunt course, named after the famous golfing brothers

Bernard and Geoff Hunt, measures 2,911 yards with a par of 35. This

quaint course offers challenges of its own and makes for a superb 27-

hole loop for golfing societies.

The 18 hole, par 71 course at Hartbourne measures 6,331 yards from

the white tees with a stunning course record of 62, set in 1971 by

Peter Oosterhuis.

Water comes into play on several holes, with a number of strategically

placed ditches and brooks, while the more than adequate bunkering

makes the course a challenge for golfers of all abilities.

The course features a number of challenging par fours where accuracy

is everything. Having hit the green, you will find the putting surfaces

fast and true and in exceptional condition.

The hardest hole on the course is the 421-yard, par four third.

Featuring trees the length of the left hand side, from the tee you

must avoid the bunker on the right and the lake straight ahead before

avoiding the four bunkers when approaching the green.


Course Tour

If you have never played at Hartsbourne Golf and Country Club before

you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about

some of the pitfalls that lie in wait and how to avoid them as you follow

our hole-by-hole tour.

Hole 1 - Par 5 - 483 YardsLong hitters can drive over or between the bunkers and thus reach the

green in two. If you cannot reach the bunkers, play your second shot off

the ditch leaving a third shot to the green.

Hole 2 - Par 3 - 177 YardsQuite a big green so the pin position is important. The difference can

be as much as two clubs from front to back.

Hole 3 - Par 4 - 421 YardsAiming left of the bunker you will need to hit your tee shot 230 yards

to give a clear shot to the green. The second shot is deceptively uphill.

Hole 4 - Par 4 - 328 YardsThe perfect tee shot on this hole should be 200 yards from the tee and

favour the right side as the fairway slopes to the left. Aim your second

shot slightly right again to allow for the sloping green.

Hole 5 - Par 3 - 182 YardsThe second short hole also has a big green with as much as two clubs

difference from front to back. There is more room on the right hand

side than the view from the tee suggests.


Hole 6 - Par 4 - 294 YardsGo on, have a go. Only 292 yards and downhill from the tee! If, on the

other hand, your bunker play is not too good, lay up at about 200 yards

from the tee.

Hole 7 - Par 5 – 519 YardsTake note of the slightly hidden bunker on the right hand side of the

fairway. If you drive to the left of the bunker, then play up to about 100

yards from the green for a simple approach.

Hole 8 - Par 4 - 410 YardsYou can see everything from the tee so avoid the bunkers on the right.

If you do not feel you can easily reach the green in two then lay up short

of the cross bunkers.

Hole 9 - Par 4 - 427 YardsAll the hazards are visible from the tee. A good drive will set up a tricky

approach shot which should be aimed well left of the pin to allow for

the slope.

Hole 10 - Par 4 - 256 YardsLong hitters can carry the cross bunker and get very close to the green.

If you lay up short, about 180 yards from the tee, you will have a short

approach to a green that slopes steeply from back to front.

Hole 11 - Par 5 - 423 YardsThe line from the tee depends on your driving distance. If you can drive

the ball 250 yards aim right of centre but for those driving 200 yards

or under, aim slightly left. Your approach shot must land short right of

the green.


Hole 12 - Par 4 - 385 Yards

There is more room on the right than there appears and your drive

should favour this side leaving an approach shot straight up a green that

slopes from left to right.


If you can drive over the fairway bunker at about 220 yards you will be

rewarded with lots of run down the hill and possibly reach the green in

two. The safe shot from the tee is to be short of the bunker then play to

the hollow leaving a relatively short third.


Your tee shot should be aimed slightly left of centre to allow for the slope.

You are helped a little by the firm ground, so that you can play a running

shot approach but a four here is never bad on a testing par three.


All the hazards are visible from the tee. Club selection is important as the

green is very contoured with two distinct levels.

Course Tour Continued



A reasonable drive will set up quite a short second shot to a green that

slopes away from you. You can run your approach shot in from the right

if you are not too confident about stopping the ball quickly.


Your drive should favour the right half of the fairway as it slopes to the

left. A big drive will be rewarded with a flat lie – anything shorter will

leave a difficult shot off a sloping fairway. The green also slopes from

right to left.


A really tough finishing hole. Hit your drive about 250 yards juts inside

the bunker on the right hand side to set up a long iron to a difficult green.

Alternatively, play to reach the green in three, make a five and be happy.


Membership

Hartsbourne Golf and Country Club represents fantastic value for money

through a variety of membership categories that suit all ages and standards.

The process of joining is simple and you can choose from a range of

membership packages to suit your lifestyle and budget with membership

fees able to be paid by instalments.

Our membership is incredibly broad in terms of age, golfing experience,

cultural background and occupation. Whether you are male, female, young

or old, new to golf, or a scratch player, everyone is welcome as a member.

Our seven-day memberships allows unlimited use of the course, our

clubhouse facilities and outdoor facilities, the opportunity to enter club

competitions and the chance to maintain an official handicap, while our five

day membership is opportune for those not wishing to play at weekends.

Similar Junior Executive membership for men and ladies is available to

those aged 30-39, while graduate membership opportunities exist for

those aged between 18-29 and offer all the benefits of full membership but

at a reduced subscription.

We recognise the future of our great game is in the hands of our junior

golfers and offer vastly discounted membership rates to younger players

and full-time students, with even more attractive rates on offer for those

aged 17 and under.

Beginner players will also find we represent an ideal choice, with excellent

facilities and our talented PGA-qualified teaching team always on hand to

offer instructions and support.


The Academy at Hartsbourne is a 6 month Golf Membership which

offers a unique opportunity for beginners or those returning to golf. It

is a structured introduction to golf within a relaxed and friendly club

environment, which includes 6 Free One Hour Lessons.

You do not have to play golf to be a member at Hartsbourne; a social

membership is available for those non-golfers wishing to make use of our

excellent clubhouse facilities.

Country Club

Although golf is at the heart of Hartsbourne, we offer so much more

than your average club.

Having once been the playground of multiple Wimbledon champion

Captain Anthony Wilding, it is appropriate that Hartsbourne Golf and

Country Club has tennis facilities. Weather permitting, the outdoor

hard-court is open all year and can be booked via the main office.

Our heated outdoor swimming pool provides members with the

perfect chance to unwind after a day on the course. With a secondary

pool and beautiful patio, the area is the perfect space for all members

to catch some sun in beautiful surroundings, swim some lengths and

generally relax.

The pool is open from the beginning of May to the end of September

and is supervised during the summer between 08:00-18:00 every day.

We also play host to a vibrant bridge society that meet weekly in our

three spacious bridge rooms. Available to all members and invited

guests of members, players of all experience are welcome to join, while

help finding a playing partner can also be organised.

With two full-sized snooker tables, members can get the measure of

more than just our challenging golf greens, as they swap putting for

potting in our immaculately maintained snooker room.


A member-run snooker club meets twice a month and organise regular

tournaments for players of all abilities, providing the perfect setting for

a different sort of challenge on the green.

Given that the game originated from military officers knocking a golf

ball to each other, it should come as no surprise that Hartsbourne is

home to two table tennis tables. Informal table tennis evenings are

organised on an ad-hoc basis, with booking in advance advisable.

The club has also earned an enviable reputation for its excellent

cuisine and first-rate service and, with a sun terrace that overlooks our

beautifully manicured gardens, our members have many reasons other

than golf to come to the club and relax.


Corporate Clients

Hartsbourne Golf and Country Club is delighted to offer businesses the

opportunity to make use of our club for corporate golf days or as the

memorable spot for a meeting. You will find us willing, welcoming and

accommodating hosts.

Reeves Weedon, who is a friendly and well-respected face for members

and visitors alike.

Reeves and his team of five teaching professionals are on hand in the

Pro Shop to give first-rate advise, while offering a comprehensive stock

of equipment.

Although skill and expertise are vital elements in any sporting field, the

use of carefully selected, high-quality equipment inevitably helps at the

cutting edge of any performance.

The professional team are committed to allowing you to make the most

Custom Fitting

There has been a growing realisation in recent times that golfing tuition

ought to go hand-in-hand with equipment that allows each player to make

the absolute utmost of whatever level of natural talent they possess.

Clubs merely bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification but

unfortunately golfers are not, coming in all shapes and sizes.

The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but

still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suitable to their swing.

This is where custom fitting comes in, a relatively new phenomenon

that allows a set of clubs to be built to marry with each golfer’s individual

physique and swing characteristics.

Custom fitting is something that we take seriously here at Hartsbourne

and we pride ourselves in what we do. We offer a full and extensive range

of products all available for custom fitting.

This service costs less than you think and can bring about a dramatic

improvement in ball striking.

Even the top touring professionals struggle to maintain the same

fundamentally sound swing characteristics every time, so it is a lot to ask

for the average golfer to do likewise.

Customising the clubs to position the golfer in the ideal position for their

physical characteristics will train the golfer to address the ball with the

correct posture and swing along the ideal swing plane, which all adds up to

the correct impact position and better scores.


Societies

While Hartsbourne is a traditional members’ club, we do warmly

welcome visitors and golfing societies and extend an invitation to come

and enjoy our hospitality.

With our immaculate and historic golf courses, our exceptional catering

team and our professional and attentive staff we are confident that your

day with us will be most enjoyable.

It is because we understand every event is unique that we offer an

extensive range of custom-built packages designed to cater for your

requirements. Whether it is a quick 18 holes followed by lunch in the

Spike Bar or a full-blown Golf Day with breakfast, lunch and dinner, our

events team is here to help.

Society packages can be tailored to meet any budget and can consist of a

number of options with all 27 holes available.

The golf shop provides a comprehensive range of equipment as well as

being able to arrange golf lessons, group golfing clinics and prizes. We

ensure you remember the little things that really help create a special day

by organise on-course competitions such as Longest Drive and Nearest

the Pin, should you wish.

We do ask that golfing guests produce a current handicap certificate and

observe the etiquette and rules and regulations of the club

The Clubhouse

The Clubhouse at Hartsbourne Golf and Country Club provides all the

facilities required by men, women and juniors and is steeped in history.

Records show there has been a house, in one form or another, on the

same site since as early as the 14th century and it has now become the

social hub of the club.

The Spike Bar delivers a wide array of beers, wines and spirits and a

choice of non-alcoholic beverages. Hot and cold food is served seven

days a week with friendly service to ensure golfers can celebrate or

commiserate in hospitable surroundings.

The restaurant serves a host of tempting meals with friendly and

professional service and is open seven days a week.

The snooker room allows golfers to swap putting for potting on one of

our two full-sized snooker tables, while a twice-weekly bridge club meet

in the cards room, with members and invited guests welcome.

The clubhouse is also home to table tennis tables, although members

are advised to book tables in advance to ensure the room is not

otherwise engaged.

Our clubhouse is perfectly suited as a venue for any event and is available

for hire. Our approachable and efficient staff provide first-class customer

service and a meticulous attention to detail that will make your visit to

Hartsbourne one you will remember for all the right reasons.

Fine Dining

At Hartsbourne Golf and Country Club we look to offer a first-class

service both on and off the course and our aim is for guests to have as

equally an enjoyable experience in the clubhouse as they do tackling our

parkland course.

The club has earned an enviable reputation beyond golf for the quality

and conviviality of its dining facilities. Atmospheric and comfortable,

the restaurant is defined by brilliant food and a dedicated, friendly and

professional service.

The kitchen is run by General Manager Terry Mulford-Lawlor, who has been

with the club for over 14 years, and uses all of his experience to provide

great cuisine and ambience for both members and outside functions.

Our chef and his outstanding team have gained a growing reputation for

the quality and range of the menu and this quality cuisine, combined with

wonderful service makes the restaurant the sophisticated centre of day-to-

day life at the club.

The restaurant is also available for private hire and is a wonderful venue for

any occasion, from weddings to Bar Mitzvah’s, birthdays to office parties,

the Hartsbourne Golf and Country Club restaurant has the ambience and

style to host your event.

If time is at a premium and you just want a quick but filling snack, then these

are available daily from The Spike Bar.

Graham is the new Banqueting and Marketing Manager and has joined

Hartsbourne with a wealth of expertise and experience in the Functions

Hospitality and Catering Business.

Set within walking distance of Bushey Heath town, the clubhouse provides

picturesque views over 300 acres of Hertfordshire countryside.

The splendour of the location is matched only by the meticulous attention

to detail shown by our conscientious staff whatever the size or nature of

the occasion.

Our function suite offers flexibility, allowing us to cater for all your

requirements, from a small, intimate party to a sit-down meal for 120 up

to a standing reception of up to 180.

Our terrace is a lovely spot to sit and enjoy a drink should you be lucky

Practice Facilities

One of the often-overlooked criteria in choosing a golf club to belong to

is the standard of its practice facilities.

While the course is obviously of paramount importance, the game of

golf is a never-ending, sometimes frustrating, pursuit of excellence and

the only way to improve is by spending time working on the areas of our

game that do not meet one’s hopes or expectations.

The club’s practice facilities are open to anyone who has paid a green

fee. For those wishing to work on their short game, there is a large

putting green that has been specially prepared to complement the subtle

borrows and run of the course greens.

The long game is equally well catered for, with a covered driving range

featuring three bays that allows golfers the opportunity to open their

shoulders and feel the flight of the ball before stepping onto the course.

A large chipping area is also available for golfers looking to perfect those

round-saving up-and-downs and sand saves. For those who find time is

at a premium, there are practice nets by the driving range that afford the

opportunity to get loose before beginning a round.

Visitors

Visitors are always welcome at Hartsbourne where we endeavour to

provide a warm welcome and a day out to remember. You do not have

to be a golfer to be able to spend an enjoyable time with us.

You will find the course provides an interesting challenge for golfers

of all abilities, though, we do ask that golfing guests produce a current

handicap certificate and observe the etiquette and rules and regulations

of the club.

The well-stocked Pro Shop will allow you to stock up on consumables

and to browse the wide range of golf equipment and clothing. The staff

can arrange for one-on-one tuition should you wish to brush up your

skills before play.

Golf trolleys and electric buggies are available, although booking in

advance is advisable.

After the game, head to the clubhouse where you can relax with

companions in the comfortable lounge or the sun terrace that overlooks

the immaculately manicured gardens. A full range of catering facilities

is also available.

read our rules on dress regulations to ensure your visit runs as smoothly

as possible.

A minimum standard of smart casual dress is required in all areas of the

clubhouse at all times.

Social Activities

Hartsbourne doesn’t just want to be thought of as a place to come and

enjoy an excellent round of golf, the club wants members and visitors to

feel so comfortable and at ease here that it becomes like a second home.

While there are two lovely courses, there is so much more to offer and

all are invited to spend some time here whether the golf clubs have been

popped in the car boot or not.

There is a lively social side to Hartsbourne with numerous events organised

throughout the year.

Various themed dining evenings always prove to be very popular, as

members like to take every opportunity to enjoy the excellent catering on

offer at Hartsbourne.

The club dinners are also a highlight of the social calendar at Hartsbourne,

as members are able to build and renew friendships away from the on

course competitions.

Significant dates in the calendar are also celebrated with gusto as our

festive meals are always warmly welcomed by our members, while our

regular quiz nights always go down a treat.

However, if the delights of golf have not hooked you but you would like to

play an active part in Hartsbourne’s social side as well as being able to make

use of the clubhouse facilities, then social membership is also available.

How to Find Us

Hartsbourne Golf and Country Club is located in close proximity to

Watford town centre and is easily accessible from the M1 and A41.

For satellite navigation purposes our postcode is WD23 1JW.

DirectionsFrom the A41 – Take the exit at junction 19 to Watford. At the next

roundabout take the second exit onto N Western Avenue. Continue

along this road until reaching the roundabout where you take the third

exit onto Colne Way/N Western Avenue. Continue straight before

taking the third exit onto Elstree Road at the following roundabout. At

the next roundabout take the first exit onto Heathbourne Road and stay

on this until reaching a right hand turn onto The Common. After 0.3 miles

turn left onto Hartsbourne Avenue where you will find the entrance to

the club car park straight ahead.

Public Transport The nearest railway station is Bushey, which is just under three miles

away. Seven trains an hour depart from central London with an estimated

journey time of between 15-28 minutes.
