HARTLEY PRIMARY ACADEMY NEWSLETTER Issue 5 2016/17 Hartley Primary Academy Newsletter 10 March 2017 ISSUE 5, TERM 4, 10 MARCH 2017 This is a very busy term for our team of committed PTA members and we have a number of fundraising events going on over the next few weeks. The PTA Quiz Night takes place on Friday 17 th March – the competition will be fierce! You can enter as individuals or as a team – please ask at the School Office for details. There is still time to buy Easter Bunny Hunt tickets for the last week of term. If you have a younger sibling at nursery/pre-school, they are welcome to enter – please add their name and include the £2.50 entry to their form. Forms must be back by Friday 17 th March so the Easter Bunny has time to visit the supermarket! All children must be supervised by an adult please! The PTA’s popular Mother’s Day Stall will be open for business on Thursday 23 rd and Friday 24 th March, after school on the top playground. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the PTA team for devoting their time to these events and encourage you to join and take part if you are not already doing so! In school we have enjoyed a number of activities – not least relating to World Book Week (I don’t think we are likely to forget Mr Goldsmith’s reincarnation as Gangsta Granny – especially as he accompanied Mr Higgs’ Rowan class to Hartley Library!). The children looked amazing last Friday and clearly put a lot of thought and effort into their costumes. Mrs Cashmore coordinated trips to the library for every class and I would like to thank all our parents and grandparents who volunteered to walk down with the children. Take Pride events have continued this term – our older children thoroughly enjoyed Dodgeball at Northfleet School for Girls and performed fantastically well against the other schools, coming fourth out of 20 teams. We are taking a group of children to a Take Pride netball competition next Wednesday and wish them luck! Thank you to all our helpers who kindly volunteer to get the children to the venues on the day. Mrs Fewell gives a significant amount of time to coordinating these activities. I also thank Miss Shorter, Mrs Masters, Miss Gould and Mrs Gill for supporting and coaching our children at these competitions. This is a very busy term for our team of committed PTA members and we have a number of fundraising events going on over the next few weeks.

ATTENDANCE FIGURE CURRENTLY AT:

96.0 %

Concerns about your child

Should you wish to discuss any issues regarding your child, please can you raise them with the class teacher in the first instance.

On some occasions, concerns can be dealt with quicker by meeting your child’s teacher, rather than waiting for a meeting with either myself or Mrs Lambourne, Vice-Principal. I am very happy to meet with parents should you feel that this is necessary.

In addition, Pop-ins can be booked with teachers on Monday afternoons between 3.30 and 3.55pm.

If the matter is confidential, then of course, please arrange to see a senior member of staff and we will deal with the matter in the strictest confidence.

Attendance

Children should be in school for 8.45am ready to learn as soon as they get into their classrooms. Children who arrive after 9.00am must be signed into school by an adult, via the School Office. If your child is going to be in late due to traffic/an appointment etc., by all means, contact the School Office to let us know.

Should your child be absent from school you must inform us before 9.00am that morning and then on each day of any subsequent absence.

Our classes are rewarded each week for their combined attendance (our mascots are proudly displayed on our front page of the newsletter).

At this time of year, when the weather is turning warmer, tummy bugs and bugs in general can do the rounds and come back for another visit. Please can we stress to parents that children must be clear of sickness/ diarrhoea for 24 hours after the last bout. Thank you.

The chart below is a useful guide for parents. Please click on the image to view a larger version of the chart.

Collection at the end of day

If someone other than yourself is collecting your child at home time, you must contact the School Office by phone in order to make staff aware of the change in collection. If phone calls to the school can be made before 3pm to assist the team in getting messages out to classes, thank you.

Please support the school in this regard – for reasons of safeguarding we must follow our published protocol – for further information please visit our website – see Safeguarding in the Parent Section.

School Dinner Money

Please can we remind parents and carers to pay promptly for school dinners. The daily charge for a school meal is £2.20, £11.00 for the week. Please pay on Monday for the week ahead, thank you. Cheques should be made payable to Olive Dining Ltd.

We have no update as yet on whether we can offer parents online payment of school dinner money.

NSPCC – Speak Out. Stay Safe

Our fundraising efforts for the NSPCC campaign exceeded all our expectations – a massive thank you to everyone who donated £5,186.85 to the cause. The Dance-a-thon was a huge success; the children thoroughly enjoyed the day and we owe a huge thanks to Mrs Masters for leading the routines throughout the day.

Year 5 Maths Workshops

Mr Dutton has been holding maths information workshops this term and last, for Year 5 parents.

The first session covered Addition and Subtraction, the second session held this week was on Multiplication and Division and the final session (Wednesday 29th March) in the last week of this term will be on Reasoning.

For the parents and pupils who have attended these sessions after school, we hope they have been beneficial and have provided you with additional tools to enable you to support your child at home. The presentations and worksheets can be found on our website under the curriculum section and you can access the link here:

Year 5 Maths Workshops

Thank you to Mr Dutton for coordinating and running these sessions for our Year 5 parents.

A message from Mr Dutton:

Year 6 Holland Information Evening

– Tuesday 28th March at 6.30pm

Letters came home this week, please can parents and carers make every effort to attend. We will be sharing with you the details of the trip; the journey to and from, activities each day, what to pack, pocket money and so on. We also need to check with you your mobile numbers so we can text you our arrival confirmation and departure details for the homeward bound journey should they deviate from our plans.

There are a number of forms to take away with you on the evening for completion and return. Year 6 children should also come along to the evening! The presentation/discussion normally lasts about an hour.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Year 6 parents may wish for their child to walk home or be met away from the school in order that they gain some independence in preparation from the transition to secondary school.

We do need written parental permission to enable this to happen – thank you.

Year 6 children cannot be responsible for younger siblings. Children in Year 5 and below must be collected from school by an adult.

After School Clubs – Finish Week Starting Monday 20th March

The following clubs ONLY will be offering a session week starting Monday

27th March:

Speed Stacking with Miss Galinis – Thursday 30th March

Future Events

We would also like to coordinate a dog charity

collection. We will be having a collection in Term 5

for Valgrays Border Collie Rescue.

More information will follow but we will be looking for

any old towels, blankets, sheets, pillows, duvets,

adult T-shirts. If you have a ‘spring clean’ over the

coming weeks, please can we ask you to hold onto

any of these items ready for dropping into school

after Easter.

Thank you for your support,

Mrs Creed and the School Council Hartley Primary Academy

News…Fundraising Ideas…

On Friday 24th March it will be Red Nose Day. This year we are

asking if the children can come to school in non-school uniform

sporting something red. They are encouraged, as usual, to add their

Comic Relief badges, head gear and noses.

We will be having a bucket collection on the top playground before

and after school for your donations. We are asking for vountary

donations this year rather than specifying prices, following a very

successful NSPCC sponsored event last term.

We have brought back our ‘coin collection’ this term. If you wish to donate

any of your loose change, please drop it into the box at the School Office.

We accept any coins – so long as it’s Sterling!

The money raised will go towards renovating the 4 square grids on the top

playground. We will keep collecting until the end of the academic year.

Last year the coin collection raised over £80!! Thank you for your donations.
