    The following information was taken

from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)Web site.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is adevelopmental disability that can causesignificant social, communication andbehavioral challenges. There is often noth-ing about how people with ASD look thatsets them apart from other people, but peo-ple with ASD may communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are differentfrom most other people. The learning, think-ing, and problem-solving abilities of peoplewith ASD can range from gifted to severelychallenged. Some people with ASD need alot of help in their daily lives; others needless.

A diagnosis of ASD now includes sever-al conditions that used to be diagnosed sep-arately: autistic disorder, pervasive develop-

mental disorder not otherwise specified(PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome. Theseconditions are now all called autism spec-trum disorder.

    Signs and Symptoms

People with ASD often have problemswith social, emotional, and communicationskills. They might repeat certain behaviorsand might not want change in their dailyactivities. Many people with ASD also havedifferent ways of learning, paying attention,or reacting to things. Signs of ASD beginduring early childhood and typically lastthroughout a person’s life.

Children or adults with ASD might:• not point at objects to show inter-

est (for example, not point at an airplane fly-ing over)

    • not look at objects when anotherperson points at them

    • have trouble relat ing to others ornot have an interest in other people at all

    • avoid eye contact and want to bealone

    • have trouble understanding otherpeople’s feelings or talking about their ownfeelings

    • prefer not to be held or cuddled,or might cuddle only when they want to

    • appear to be unaware when peo-ple talk to them, but respond to other sounds

    • be very interested in people, butnot know how to talk, play, or relate to them

    • repeat or echo words or phrasessaid to them, or repeat words or phrases inplace of normal language

    • have t rouble express ing theirneeds using typical words or motions

    • not play “pretend” games ( forexample, not pretend to “feed” a doll)

    • repeat act ions over and overagain

    • have trouble adapting when a rou-tine changes

    • have unusual reactions to the waythings smell, taste, look, feel, or sound

    • lose skills they once had (for exam-

ple, stop saying words they were using)

DiagnosisDiagnosing ASD can be difficult since

there is no medical test, like a blood test, todiagnose the disorders. Doctors look at thechild’s behavior and development to make adiagnosis.

ASD can sometimes be detected at 18months or younger. By age 2, a diagnosis byan experienced professional can be consid-ered very reliable.1 However, many childrendo not receive a final diagnosis until mucholder. This delay means that children withASD might not get the early help they need.

TreatmentThere is currently no cure for ASD.

However, research shows that early inter-vention treatment services can improve a

child’s development.2, 3 Early interventionservices help children from birth to 3 yearsold (36 months) learn important skills.Services can include therapy to help thechild talk, walk, and interact with others. Therefore, it is important to talk to yourchild’s doctor as soon as possible if youthink your child has ASD or other develop-mental problem.

Even if your child has not been diag-nosed with an ASD, he or she may be eligi-ble for early intervention treatment services. The Individuals with Disabilities EducationAct (IDEA) says that children under the ageof 3 years (36 months) who are at risk ofhaving developmental delays may be eligi-ble for services. These services are providedthrough an early intervention system in yourstate. Through this system, you can ask foran evaluation.

In addition, treatment for particularsymptoms, such as speech therapy for lan-

guage delays, often does not need

for a formal ASD diagnosis.Causes and Risk FactorsWe do not know all of the c

ASD. However, we have learned tare likely many causes for multipleASD. There may be many differenthat make a child more likely to ASD, including environmental, biolgenetic factors.

    • Most scient ists agree thare one of the risk factors that canperson more likely to develop ASD

    • Children who have a sibASD are at a higher risk of also hav5-10

    • ASD tends to occur morepeople who have certain genetic mosomal conditions, such as fragidrome or tuberous sclerosis .11-14

    • When taken during pregnprescription drugs valproic acid anmide have been linked with a highASD.15-16

    • There is some evidencecritical period for developing ASbefore, during, and immediately a17

    • Children born to older paat greater risk for having ASD.18

ASD continues to be an importahealth concern. Like the many familwith ASD, CDC wants to find out wes the disorder. Understanding ththat make a person more likely toASD will help us learn more about es. We are currently working on olargest U.S. studies to date, calledExplore Early Development (SEED)looking at many possible risk fa

ASD, including genetic, environmennancy, and behavioral factors.

By Tresa EricksonDo you compost? Do you save grass

clippings, leaves, yard waste, kitchen scrapsand more for the compost bin? If so, youhave some really good fertilizer on yourhands, and unlike traditional chemical-basedfertilizers, your compost will not harm theenvironment.

Compost is great for top-dressing lawnstwo or three times a year. It adds vital nutri-ents to the lawn, including nitrogen, phos-phorus and potassium. It works fast, doesn’tsmell and won’t stain concrete or burn the

grass. And, it is easy to apply. No matter where you live, the best time

to top-dress your lawn is when the grass isactively growing. If you live in an area witha cool climate, spring to mid-summer is ideal. If you live in a warm climate, mid-summer isideal.

Top-dressing a lawn with compost iseasy. First, you need to aerate and seed thelawn. Then, you can apply the compost.Make sure the compost is finely textured. This will ensure even raking later. If yourcompost is coarse and lumpy, consider pur-chasing some from a nursery.

Apply the compost on a dry, calm day.Shovel some around the yard in piles andthen spread it out in a thin layer. When you

By Tresa EricksonLighting is one of the most important fea-

tures of a home, indoors and out. It providesillumination for tasks inside and keeps bur-glars away outside. When chosen well, light-

ing can also enhance a home’s beauty. Hereare some tips the next time you change oradd to your outdoor lighting.

Outdoor lighting comes in many types.Post lights are mounted on a post, which isusually located near the driveway. Walllights are mounted on walls near exteriordoors—on each side of the garage door, forexample. Ceiling mount lights are mountedon the ceiling of a porch or portico to illumi-nate the front entrance. Hanging lights servethe same purpose as ceiling mount lights butmake more of a statement in grand entrances

and tall porches.Make a list of the outdoor lights you need

and the amount you have to spend, and thenget ready to shop. Outdoor lights come in avariety of styles. Look for a style that comple-

ments the style of your home. While lanternsmight work well for a beach house, they maynot suit your contemporary home. You mightneed a sleeker, cleaner style.

Finish is another aspect to consider.Again, look to your house as a guide. If youhave a lot of brass, brass fixtures are the wayto go. If you have a lot of ironwork, look forblack fixtures. If you have a lot of chrome, look for chrome fixtures.

Scale is vital. Too small or too large of

lights can detract from the beautyhome. Look for appropriate sized you are looking for wall lights for a home, for example, you should lights that are 18 to 24 inches tall. P

tion to the elements in the area wlights will go. While you might adoing lights, having one in your smamight not work. You don’t want guetheir head on the light every time thor exit your home.

Want to make your home realUpdate the outdoor lighting. Determneeds and look for the right style, fiscale to create a safe, secure, home.

Billboards, newspaper ads, help wantedsigns—job openings are posted all overWashington County. Yet employers are stillstruggling to hire and retain qualified employ-ees.

That’s the question local volunteers havebeen working to answer and an informationalmeeting will be held on April 9 at MorainePark Technical College, Room T120, from 8 to

Manyemployers expressed frustration over highemployee turnover rates. Local humanresources and employment professionals saidmany applicants are unable to pass drugscreenings and others just lack specific jobskills.

However, “not work ready” due to “poorwork ethic” was identified as the top barrier tohiring and retaining qualified employees inWashington County.

“Not only are employers having difficultyhiring, but there’s a growing sense of frustra-tion with the quality of the individual who iscoming to apply for a job,” said Tom Hostad,Chair of Washington County Workforce

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winte

Dear Dr. Winter,My crowned tooth, #19 has broken to the gum line almost 2

months ago. I have been researching dental implants since mycurrent dentist doesn’t do implants. During this time I learned

about the AAID, which seems to have members serious aboutimplants. I obtained your name through the AAID AmericanAcademy of Implant Dentistry’s website.

I am of course researching price but also products andprocedures. I enclosed a digital x-ray of my broken tooth for youto evaluate.Everyplace I've gone to has indicated the need for bone graftingand then the rest of the implant procedure. I've gone to an oralsurgeon and a periodontal specialist who both leave the crown forthe dentist to complete. I noticed on your website that you do thesurgery and the chimney and crown placement. Can you give methe products you use and associated fees? Thank you in advancefor your time. K.J.

Dear Kathy, I am sorry you broke your tooth and am happy youare doing some research to become well informed. The x-ray you sent only shows me part of the story. I need to seethe opposing tooth, your biting scheme and the width of the bonethat is left around the root. I also need to see your remaining teethto make sure they aren’t having issues. The answers you have been give are all accurate. Usually we takethe root out and graft the area with bone. This will help preservethe dimension of bone in the area prior to placement of yourimplant. Your insurance, if you have any is usually able to helpwith the extraction cost but will often not cover the cost of socket

grafting or implant placement. The implant, chimney and crown costs depend on the labs weuse and I offer two different implant systems which both workfabulously if patients are in need of a lesser expensive option.

I use microscopic dental labs that spend a lot of time makingthe implant chimney and crown according to my specifications.Chimneys or “abutments” can be pre-made sometimes and at othertimes a custom abutment may be needed to provide bettercontours, support and strength for an implant crown.

If a patient has a budget that will determine what they do wecan make arrangements to use less expensive labs to meet theirneeds. The concept of Upgradeable Dentistry that Dr. Winterlectures about describes how we try and provide the implantservice, denture service or reconstruction service that meets yourbudget and your cosmetic needs. There is a difference in what youreceive when you utilize master dental ceramists versus using alarger volume dental lab.

Without seeing you and evaluating the quality and quantity of your remaining bone, I can not give you fees but I can offer youand our readers a complimentary consultation to review youroptions with you. We also offer comprehensive examination and x-

ray visits for patients that want to get all costs the dayin for their visit. We do offer interest free financing years through Care Credit and we offer I-Care that wanyone for credit if they have two forms of debit or if they are not eligible for Care Credit. Please visit my website to see examples of my workof patient testimonials.

I wish you luck and would be happy to see complimentary consultation if you wish. I use twimplant systems; one of them is BioHorizons taperwith Laser Lok technology and the other is MIS Seve

Feel free to visit their websites to learn more technologies. They are both amazing companies that offer many

options. In this day and age most implant systems wmade of high strength titanium alloy. The specificsdesign, surface coating, crestal implant design are your dentist should be able to discuss with you if you
