MTL provides the connection between your HART® fieldinstruments, control systems and instrument managementsoftware allowing you to access this data and reap the benefitsof communicating with your HART devices full time.

Powerful instrument management software is being widelyadopted to provide detailed information for a broad range ofHART field devices. The MTL HART connection provideson-line access from a PC to the HART field device forconfiguration, calibration, diagnostics, predictivemaintenance, automated documentation etc.

MTL's HART connection systems support a widerange of Instrument Management Softwarepackages including AMS from Emerson ProcessManagement and Cornerstone from AppliedSystem Technologies. (Contact MTL for a full list ofsupported software)

Whether for a new installation or theupgrade of an existing facility, MTLprovides solutions for traditional andProcess I/O systems in both IS andgeneral purpose applications.

MTL4840 HART Connection for Traditional I/O Process Systems

MTL4840 Series HART Connection System offers the following features:

The MTL4840 HART connection system is comprised of the following main components: MTL4841 - HART communications module MTL4842 - HART Interface module HART backplane Extensive range of General Purpose and IS standard and customised termination boards

The MTL4841 communications module and MTL4842 interface module provide the HART datainterface between smart devices in the field and HART instrument management software run on a PC.

Up to sixteen field instruments can be connected via a field connection unit or IS backplane to a singleMTL4842. In turn up to 16 interface modules can be connected to the MTL4841. This 16-channelmodularity provides a compact, easily configurable and expandable HART system

Using a standard RS485 serial link up to 31 MTL 4841 modules can be connected to a single PCgiving communication with up to 7936 individual HART devices i.e.16 loops x 16 MTL4842 modules x31 MTL4841s (see diagram on following page). Additionally the MTL4840 system supports themultidrop connection of HART devices on a single loop, expanding the possible maximum capacity ofa system even more. Where safety parameters for individual loops may affect intrinsically safeapplications, MTL will provide further information.

The MTL4841 and MTL4842 modules can either bemounted directly on to the HMU16 termination boardsfor general purpose applications ...

... or on the appropriate backplanes for ISisolator requirements.

Alternatively, for maximum flexibility, the BPHM64HART backplane accommodates one MTL4841 and fourMTL4842 modules. The BPHM64 connects via ribboncable to our versatile range of general purpose and IStermination boards so that the optimum solution can beselected for any application.

HART® Connections



For general purpose applications our DIN rail mounting HARTconnection boards connect to 16 general purpose field instrumentswhilst maintaining channel to channel isolation.

The HCU16 allows pass-through connections for transmitterpower supply, input signal and common. Resistorconditioning options are compatible with all I/O cards.

The HCU16AO includes HART filters for I/O card that areincompatible with HART signals

For smaller applications the HMU16/32 can connect to up to 32 AI or AO GP loops whilst theBPMH16/BPSH16/BPMH16U/ BPSH16-32 connect to either 16 or 32 IS field instruments. Adaptercards are available for the BPMH16U for easy integration to I/O cards.

A number of features can be included in the connection units and backplanes as required including:

channel to channel isolation customised field and system connectors HART signal conditioning HART filters for use in systems where the analogue output signal either interferes

CUSTOMISED CONNECTION UNITSMTL offers a range of general purpose and IS interfaces providingdirect connection with control system I/O cables as well as HART®

connectivity. For IS applications, MTL's universal backplanes, with acustomised adapter card, give the user a compatible systemconnector complete with HART® interface. BPMH16U (see overleaf),BPM16U and BPM32 (see 'System Integration' section) backplanesmay be used for IS signals. For general purpose signals, a range ofcustom HART® interface termination units are available for most DCSand PLC I/O cards. These replace the existing DCS termination units,saving space and allowing easy upgrading. Please contact MTL fordetails.
