A word fromMAYOR JIM GUNNING
A word fromExECUTIvE DIRECTOR LISA RIGSbY PETERSON
Lone Tree is expanding – there is no doubt about that. With five residential developments, a hotel, three major health services projects and one giant sporting goods store all currently under development, the landscape of Lone Tree continues to evolve. Yet, it is the jewel box you are sitting in now that I think defines a critical element of the direction of Lone Tree. We are a city committed to advancing the quality of life of citizens and guests, expanding opportunities to people of all ages and recruiting the best-of-the-best to live and work in Lone Tree. The Arts Center exemplifies that vision; as one of the few cities of our size to boast a professional facility like this one, we continue to set the pace.
Last summer, the Arts Center received an interesting message via Facebook. A gentleman in Texas was looking to relocate; he explored several metro areas, paying particular attention to surrounding communities in his search for the right balance of convenience, community and amenities. In his review of Denver, he found our Arts Center and, consequently, Lone Tree. He was immediately impressed, not only with the LTAC, but with our city in general. He may have eventually found Lone Tree another way, but his top criteria for where to live was a place with arts nearby. We all knew LTAC would be a benefit to Lone Tree and its neighbors; this story highlights to me that LTAC is also an exceptional beacon for our city to those beyond our backyard.
It is truly a great day to be in Lone Tree and a great night to be at the Lone Tree Arts Center. Enjoy your show!
Sincerely,Mayor Jim Gunning
Since we opened the Lone Tree Arts Center in early September 2011, close to 60,000 people have come through our doors. You’ve come for concerts, plays, meetings, fundraisers, dance recitals, ski movies, classes, speakers, community updates, awards ceremonies, magic shows, children’s programs – you name it. Almost every nook and cranny of the building has been used by professional performers, community groups, and other rental cli-ents. One night we featured the award-winning Arvada Center production of Ragtime, and a few days later saw the stage taken over by dozens of chil-dren performing in Christian Youth Theatre’s Hello Dolly! . Our youngest audience member was a 4-week old baby lulled by a Lone Tree Symphony Orchestra concert; our oldest was a 96-year old woman attending a live musical production (White Christmas) for the first time in her life. We think
our attendance numbers are impressive – but it’s the individual experience that each of you has when you come here that means the most to us.
From the beginning, our goal has been to make sure that the Lone Tree Arts Center serves as a vibrant center for the community. We don’t just want you to come through our doors once. We want you to leave saying to yourself “I can’t wait to go back there again!” If someone has gone out of their way to make your experience here an extraordinary one, then we are doing our job well. Your pres-ence in our audience is important to us. We hope that you enjoy the performance you see tonight, and that the 2012/13 season will bring you back through our doors again soon!
Enjoy the show!Lisa Rigsby Peterson, Executive Director

“Do you believe in magic?” The Lovin’ Spoonful
Times of big change in thought, in industry, in politics, in art have always been great storytelling fod-der - none more than the last decade of the 1800’s, “The Gay Nineties,” and none more than the1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Where else could the likes of Ziegfeld, Houdini,Alfred Krupp and Bert Williams have possibly rubbed shoulders?
“Magic” was everywhere: the electric light, the telephone, the phonograph, the horseless carriage.People sought out “entertainment.” Vaudeville and baseball and spiritualism were on the rise. Whata perfect set-up for a love story! What a perfect set-up for “magic!”
-Larry Hecht
Harry RobensteinLittle to nothing is known about this real-life gambler, con man, fake spiritualist and accident-pronemagician. He was probably from New Orleans, born to a Jewish father and a Creole fortune-tellingmother. As a performer, he seemed almost cursed: he shot off his own index finger during a magicshow and lost his left eye while playing the villain in a melodrama. It is said he still did the eveningperformance. He’s infamous for building an elaborate and expensive spiritualist parlor at the ChicagoWorld’s Fair.
Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr.There are many variations on how the great Broadway impresario was connected to the ChicagoWorld’s Fair before he was famous. This one’s the most fun: Flo’s father was the musical directorfor the Fair and created the Trocadero Theatre to house the world’s best classical music. He senthis son Flo around the world to acquire great classical musicians. But instead, Flo returned with thebest vaudeville entertainment the world had to offer. He created a lavish show, which included aRussian dance troupe, a dog act, a clown with an accordion, an acrobat, a little-person trapeze act,a yodeler, a coquette with a fan, a sword swallower, a ventriloquist, and of course, Sandow theMagnificent.
Bert WilliamsWilliams was born in Nassau, Bahamas, but raised in Riverside, California. Bert started his careerthe only way most black actors could – in minstrel shows, such as San Francisco’s “MastodonMinstrels.” Because of his extraordinary comic talent, he eventually achieved stardom on Broadwayand was the first African American to join the actors’ union. Florenz Ziegfeld received much criticismfrom other actors in the famed Ziegfeld Follies for casting Bert. Flo told them he could replace everyone of them, except Bert. Harry the Great involves a fictional account of an early working relation-ship between Flo and Bert.
DIRECTOR’S NOTES
THE REAL-LIFE HISTORICAL CHARACTERS THAT POPULATE THE MAGICAL WORLD OF HARRY THE GREAT
![Page 23: Harry the Great Program](https://reader033.fdocuments.in/reader033/viewer/2022042523/568c34701a28ab0235907200/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Eugen SandowKnown as Sandow the Magnificent, this vaudeville strongman was the father of modern bodybuild-ing. Sandow, born in Prussia, became Ziegfeld’s first headliner. Audiences were enraptured with hismuscles and enjoyed his flexing displays even more so than his ability to lift extraordinary amountsof weight. He went on to found a bodybuilding magazine, a gym, and the first bodybuilding compe-tition. At the Mr. Olympia competition, still held today, the trophy given to the winner is called “TheSandow.”
Alfred KruppKrupp was the heir to a 400-year-old German dynasty from Essen. His family business, FriedrichKrupp AG, was the largest company in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. It manufacturedammunition and armaments. Krupp was a proud anti-Semite and longed for “a counter-revolution”against Jews, socialists, and liberals. All of Krupp’s involvement with Harry Robenstein is fictional, but his company did create the terrifying German Gun Pavilion, which was a huge success at theChicago World’s Fair.
FifiAlthough not based upon a specific person, Fifi exemplifies the fate of many young women duringthe Chicago World’s Fair. Fifi is a “woman of the evening” and works at a high-end establishment inThe Levee, Chicago’s red-light district, which popped up in 1893 in response to the Fair. Hundredsof young people flocked to Chicago each day in hope of finding work – and countless young womenbecame prostitutes, either by force or by necessity.
Samantha RobensteinThe delightfully unconventional Sam represents many of the new freedoms women were experienc-ing during the 1890s. In some athletic situations, women could get away with wearing somethingakin to pants. The women’s suffrage movement was underway and it was becoming more commonfor a woman to venture out alone (sans escort!), which could take a girl to some exciting places –like the Chicago World’s Fair. Although to us, these paltry freedoms may not seem like much, theywere nonetheless important steps in the women’s movement.

SCIENTIFIC & CULTURAL FACILITIES DISTRICTSince 1989, Scientific and Cultural Facilities District (SCFD) has distributed funds from a 1/10 of 1% sales and use tax to cultural facilities throughout the seven-county Denver, Colorado metropolitan area. The funds support cultural facilities whose primary purpose is to enlighten and entertain the public through the production, presentation, exhibition, advancement and preservation of art, music, theatre, dance, zoology, botany, natural history and cultural history.
Distributing approximately $40 million annually, the SCFD provides funding to roughly 300 organizations each year, including the Lone Tree Arts Center. As a result of SCFD, Denver is now in the national spotlight and has been elevated in stature to a world-class cultural center.

The Lone Tree Cultural Arts Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, was formed in 2008 to ensure that the Lone Tree Arts Center meets the current and future needs of the community. During the construction phase of the Arts Center, the Foundation worked to raise funds necessary to realize many of the extraordinary upgrades to the Center that you see today – including the beautiful grand piano and the orchestra shell.
The Foundation is currently focused on enhancing the Lone Tree Arts Center by providing fundraising and other community leadership. As part of the effort to provide superior programming at the Arts Center, the Lone Tree Cultural Arts Foundation actively works to secure funding in support of specific programs at the Center. In fact, during the 2012/2013 season, the Lone Tree Cultural Arts Foundation is proud to be a presenting sponsor of all six theatrical productions.

The Lone Tree Cultural Arts Foundation
The Lone Tree Cultural Arts Foundation donated a Yamaha C7 grand piano to the Lone Tree Arts Center at the end of May. The acquisition of a piano for the Arts Center was the final element of the first phase of the Capital Campaign, a three-year fundraising effort led by the Foundation. The Yamaha grand is a piano of choice for some of the world’s leading musicians, and owning rather than having to rent such a marvelous
instrument will mean long-term savings for the Arts Center. Special thanks go to major piano contributors Linda Bjelland, Betty A. and Don E. Winslow, and Park Meadows Shopping Center.
Foundation Chair Art Bouton commented with a smile, “We’ve worked a long time on this, and over the last year we’ve become experts on all things piano. Not to say that any of us can play.”
