Notes From the Pastor
The Church Messenger HARRODSBURG CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 305 SOUTH MAIN STREET, HARRODSBURG, KY, 40330
To be Christ-Centered by living, sharing, proclaiming, and celebrating God’s Word.
My very first class in seminary was with Dr. George Coats. Dr. Coats was considered one of the premier teachers of the Old Testament and had worked with the great Gehard von Rod. About twenty of us sat in the room that first day, a little overwhelmed and ready to take lots of notes.
Dr. Coats began the class with prayer then put up two pictures:
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he began, “which picture is the more accurate depiction of the sky?”
As one body, we pointed to the picture on the right of the astronomy chart.
“If you would,” Dr. Coats continued, “please close your eyes and listen to me.” We did.
“It is a beautiful night in spring. The air is warm and smells of lilacs. You are walking hand in hand with your first love. You can see the stars and the moon. You stop and turn toward each other. Your heart may burst with the feelings of love and being loved. Ladies and gentlemen open your eyes and tell me – which picture is the more accurate depiction of the sky?”
With tear stained faces, we all pointed at Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”.
Dr. Coats smiled. “Scripture is not a law book or a history book or a medical book. Above all, Scripture is a love story. Never forget that. Now – let’s start studying the Bible.”
I don’t know who needed to hear this today. But whoever you are, remember that your First Love is with us all.

Greetings colleagues, I'm communicating with you as a congregation with a rich tradition of supporting the ministry of Camp Wakon' Da-Ho. I'm sure most of you know that we are selling t-shirts to help pay the bills during this summer of no revenue. I'm hoping to remind the parishioners of HCC to support the camp by buying this t-shirt. Folks can order a shirt on the region's website, ccinky.net. On the home page select the "Ministries" tab and then select camp, then Wakon' Da-Ho. Thanks for all you do and helping us keep the lights on and the grass cut at camp. T-shirts are $20 each. Peace, Dave Carr
The Outreach Ministry team met by e-mail. The cost of the Mission First ramp installed last month was covered by two donations. There is enough in the Mission First budget for the next ramp and most of another. Leslie Hardman plans to provide the meal for Mercer Transformation Road to Recovery on Saturday, August 1. On Saturday, July 18, Jack Coleman, Martin Thomas, Naomi Martin, and Norah Martin removed dead bushes, mowed, weedeated, and cleaned the sidewalks at the home of Mr. Van Cook, who had passed away on Friday. Leslie Hardman made masks and delivered some to Mercer Transformation. Both Leslie Hardman and Everice Shewmaker are making masks. Please let them know if a mask is needed. Dan Chilton, Leader
There will be no Nursery available for several more weeks. Children will need to sit with their families.
