OAKWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL | NEWS ISSUE 15 2019
FEATURED
FROM THE PRINCIPAL It is hard to believe that the end of the 2019 school year is almost upon us. This has been our second foundation year and what a great year it has been for all connected with Oakwood Primary School. Our new facilities have been filled with purposeful learning and the struggle and joy that learning new concepts and skills brings. We began 2019 with 401 students and the numbers have swelled to 492 and we added two new classes over the course of the year. Our enrolments for 2020 currently sit at 606 students, with 100 new Kindy students joining us and only 20 Year 6 students graduating as the first graduates to leave our school. Over the break, four new classrooms will appear on our grounds and provide more facilities for learning in the coming year. Our families and community have been so supportive of our school this year, you turn up in droves to events and have played a huge part in the success our students have achieved this year! We wish you all a restful Christmas and New Year and look forward to seeing you all in February. School recommences on Monday 3 February 2020 and we can’t wait to reconnect on this date. The school office will be open on Tuesday 28 January 2020 should you need to contact us. Our staff have been outstanding this year! We grew from 15 to 46 staff members this year and we have been so delighted with their dedication, enthusiasm and their commitment to the ‘Oakwood Way’. They consistently go the extra mile to help our students be the best they can be and have a positive attitude towards challenges. I admire the way they get to know all of our students and try to meet their needs the best they can!
Our staff will be growing again in 2020 and once more we have carefully selected educators who have displayed a commitment to what we do at Oakwood and care deeply about their students, putting children at the heart of our school! Happy News Karl and Stacey Schoeppner are celebrating the birth of Walter John Roland Schoeppner. Walter was born on Wednesday 11 December at 10:29am. Both Stacey and baby are doing well and Lilian is enjoying having a baby brother to dote over. We would like to congratulate the family on this wonderful news! Walter is our second Oakwood Baby born in 2019.
Staffing News We have a few staff who will not be returning in 2020. Stacey Schoeppner, Logan Scott and Jessie Brittain will be joining Rachel James on maternity leave. I would like to thank Stacey, Logan and Jessie for the excellent contribution they have made to the school and their students this year. We look forward to welcoming them back when they are ready to return to us. You lovely ladies will be missed! I would also like to acknowledge Min Cunningham and Danielle Rice who have been working with us in the second half of 2019. Danielle has been in Room 11 as an EA with Mrs Hanson and has provided great support to the students in there. We like to think she won’t be a stranger at Oakwood next year and really value her contribution. Min has been a wonderful addition to our office team and has also volunteered her time on a regular basis. She is such a positive influence and has put her heart and soul into being an Oakwooder this year! Thank you Min and Danielle for all of your hard work – we salute you!
I am pleased to announce that Kirsty Dunstan will be joining us permanently as an Education Assistant in 2020 having won the position through a competitive process. Congratulations Kirsty, we are delighted that you will

OAKWOOD PRIMARY SCHOOL | NEWS ISSUE 15 2019
I would like to thank all of our sponsors for the awards and the raffle. Without the generous support of these organisations, individuals and businesses, we would be unable to run events such as this. It really does make a huge difference to our school and I would encourage you to support all of these local businesses when you can! Overall our concert was a roaring success, despite the soaring temperatures and the Principal’s costume, and we look forward to the concert becoming an Oakwood tradition in the years to come!
FROM THE PRINCIPAL End of Year Concert Oh what a night! The performances of the classes and the choir blew me away. The singing, dancing and entertainment was sensational. The kids and staff did an amazing job and we were so proud of the concert items. Lots of preparation went into the concert and we were so pleased with the result. Our P & C organised the food vans, sausage sizzle and raffles and what a great element of the evening this provided! A big thank you to the P & C for all the work that went in to this. I would also like to thank Monique and Ashli Tennyenhuis, Nerida Bulich and Ben Davis for helping on the sausage sizzle! Our parents, family and community members came out in large numbers to support our concert – the oval was a picture of colour and there was such a positive feel! We really appreciate the excellent support and engagement and I know the children felt supported and enjoyed your presence.
The concert itself was organised by Michelle Nash, Bree Van Beek, Mary Hunt and Martenique Paganini. All of them played a huge role in different aspects that needed attention prior to the event and we could not have run the concert without their hard work and support! The event was a credit to them all and I am so glad that I get to work with these wonderful Oakwooders every day!

Early Childhood Sports Carnivals
On the 25 and 26 November, our youngest students had the chance to take part in their sports carnivals. There were a range of events that the groups rotated around, testing their skills and resilience whilst having so much fun. The parents and family members were out in force to support the children and there were lots of proud faces as the kids did their personal best! This was followed by a community lunch and it was lovely to see so many family members come along. The parent races were very competitive affairs with no quarter given. The event was organised brilliantly by
our ECE staff and Mr Young, well
supported by Miss Van Beek and Mrs
Nash. I would like to acknowledge the
great team work on show throughout
these events.
Families leaving Oakwood in
2019
I would like to acknowledge the following children who will not be returning to Oakwood Primary School in 2019. We wish you all the best of luck for the future, you will be missed: Oliver Jones, Connor Monson, Harper Fox Reynolds, Isaac Jones, Tahlia Morgan, Darby Hellar-Hart, Mya Pastarello-Kirby, Lola Fitzsimons, Seth De Worbies, Toby Bunton, Ruby Fitzsimons, Chelsea Woodage, Ethan Umbras, Freya Cliff, Ellie Woodage, Shealea Turner.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL Principal’s Lunch Last Tuesday was the last Principal’s Lunch of 2019. We had a representative from every class come along to be served some lovely food by myself, Mrs Nash, Miss Van Beek and Mrs Hunt. We really enjoyed hearing why the children thought they had been chosen, they certainly know what the Oakwood Way means that’s for sure! We headed outside for a play as well and finished off the event with a much needed icy pole. The manners the children displayed were second to none – what a lovely afternoon!
Term 4 Attendance Draw On Tuesday 17 December, we will be holding an attendance draw near the end of the day. Every student who has attended 90% or more this year will have their name in the box and could win some Kmart Vouchers or even the star prize of a scooter! We are very close to achieving our attendance target for 2019 and I would like to thank all of you for helping us to keep school attendance a high priority – every day matters!
New Basketball Hoop Thank you to everyone in the school community who contributed to purchasing the new adjustable basketball hoop. A special thank you to Emazee Scott For organising the whole process and purchasing and to Jason Scheutjens for putting it together and getting it set up! You guys rock - we are very appreciative. We have ten teams competing in the Mandurah Basketball Summer competition and this will help them all to achieve success

Year 6 Graduation
Wednesday 18 December sees our Year 6 students graduate. The day starts with a formal event in the Undercover Area, followed by a morning tea provided by our Year 5 students for the graduates and their families. The students will be having lunch at Spur Restaurant before heading to Flipout for all sorts of fun. We are very proud of our first Oakwood Graduates and look forward to this day being something special! Congratulations graduates!
