This month we bid a fond farewell to the legendary Tokyo String Quartet, who are retiring at the end of the 2012-13 concert season. One of the world’s most distinguished chamber music ensembles, the quartet was founded in 1969. The harmonia mundi label proudly presents the group’s valedictory release — a disc of quartets by Dvorák and Smetana (p.9). Also new from harmonia mundi, another musical legend, lutenist Paul O’Dette, offers a selection of works by Francesco da Milano (p.8) and conductor James Gaffigan leads the world première recording of Wolfgang Rihm’s Nähe fern symphony (p.7). Pianophiles will rejoice over Hyperion’s key releases for May. Angela Hewitt offers a second disc of Mozart Piano Concertos and Garrick Ohlsson is featured on a disc of solo works by Griffes (p.11). The LSO Live and Mariinsky labels focus on opera this month, with a new SACD of Weber’s Der Freischütz with Sir Colin Davis (p.16) and a DVD and Blu-ray of Verdi’s Atilla with Valery Gergiev (p.17). Orange Mountain presents another Glass première, featuring cellist Matt Haimovitz playing the composer’s second Cello Concerto (p.21) and the new, eponymous label from the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra adds another gem to the catalog with a delightful reading of Beethoven’s fourth and seventh symphonies (p.22). Non-classical priority titles include a new release from crossover superstar Claude Bolling (p.27) and a second volume of the late, great Ravi Shankar’s Living Room Sessions (p.35).

Please note: promotional copies are available for priority titles ONLY

IMPORTOn this recording, 26-year-old soprano Julie Fuchs, recent winner of a Victoire de la Musique Classique for “Lyrical Revelation of the Year” and the Gabriel Dessurget prize at the 2011 Aix-en-Provence Festival, sings a selection of early songs by Debussy and Mahler. Accompanied here by pianist Alphonse Semin, Fuchs has been celebrated in roles such as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, Urgande in Amadis de Gaule and the title role in Acis et Galatée. Over the coming decade, she will certainly be one to watch.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDCapricho, part of Channel Classics’ ongoing series focusing on the first chair players of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, features Uruguayan bassoonist Gustavo Núñez. Considered one of the finest bassoonists of his generation, Núñez studied at the Musikhochschule Hannover and the Royal College of Music. While still a student in 1987, he was awarded the Prix Suisse at the International Competition in Geneva and the Carl Maria von Weber Prize in Munich. Núñez has held the position of principal bassoonist of the Concertgebouw since 1995. Included here are works for bassoon and string orchestra by Villa-Lobos, Gubaidulina, Dutch composer Kees Olthuis and Uruguayan composer Jaurés Lamarque Pons.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDSince they met at a summer music camp in Switzerland in 2001, violinist Rosanne Philippens and pianist Yuri van Nieuwkerk have been working together as a duo. They were awarded the Netherlands Programming Foundation Duo Prize at the National Violin Competition, as well as the Het Debuut at the latest Vriendenkrans/het Debuut. On this new recording, Philippens and van Nieuwkerk pay homage not just to Bartók and Ravel, but to what they call “the unbounded world of music,” and their eclectic influences such as Radiohead, Brad Mehldau and Indonesian gamelan.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe feast of Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Twelve apostles and other followers of Jesus as described in the Bible. For this reason, Pentecost is often described by Christians today as the “Birthday of the Church.” Chants of the Holy Spirit features a selection of Gregorian chants sung by the crystal-clear voices of the Gloriae Dei Cantores Women’s Schola. The disciples waiting in the Upper Room, the rush of wind, the tongues of fire and the spreading of the Gospel are all depicted on this disc, which opens and closes with the traditional tolling of the Angelus bell. Recorded in high definition and offered as a Hybrid SACD, this recording also features a reading of the Pentecost story from the book of Acts and Dufay’s hymn Veni Creator Spiritus.

IMPORTThis special collection was created in celebration of an exhibition at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels commissioned by musician and conductor William Christie and contemporary artist Michaël Borremans. Watteau, la leçon de musique, invites the listener to discover the music that is ever-present in the works of Antoine Watteau, an early eighteenth-century painter known for his fêtes galantes — paintings of the upper class in idealized natural settings, often playing or listening to music. Watteau was also friends with many musicians and was able to accurately capture their movements in his work. Featuring works by Lully, Vivaldi, Couperin and other contemporaries, this release invokes the unbreakable link between art and music. Performers include René Jacobs, William Christie, Bernarda Fink and Paul O’Dette.

IMPORTThis release presents the world première recording of Wolfgang Rihm’s latest orches t ra l work , the symphony Nähe fern (Near Far), commissioned by and composed in close collaboration with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra under its principal conductor, James Gaffigan. The score is divided into four parts, designed to preface Brahms’s four symphonies. True to the work’s title, each section is a homage profoundly linked with its model, yet at the same time constantly moving away from it. Nähe fern is coupled with Rihm’s setting of a Goethe poem that gave the work its title, Dämmrung senkte sich von oben. It contains the line, “Dämmrung senkte sich von oben / Schon ist alle Nähe fern” (Twilight has fallen from above, / Already all nearness is distant). Originally written for voice and piano, the song is heard here in a setting for baritone and orchestra featuring Hans Christoph Begemann.

“Hans Christoph Begemann is about as fine a Lieder singer as we have any right to expect. His voice is smooth and even throughout its range… he captivates

with his story-telling ability and sense of drama.”—CLASSICS TODAY

IMPORTFrancesco da Milano (dubbed “Il Divino”) was celebrated as the preeminent composer of lute music in Renaissance Italy. He was widely published in his lifetime and remained popular across Europe into the 17th century. In this generous selection of his favorite works by the master, Paul O’Dette has grouped these elegant and refined compositions into proto suites, each consisting of a ricercar, a fantasia, and one or more intabulations of vocal “hits” of the day.

IMPORTHyperion presents a second volume of flute concertos from eighteenth-century

Naples featuring flutist Carlo Ipata and the period band Auser Musici. Their first album of this repertoire was praised not only for its impeccably stylish playing but also for the discovery of the music itself, which despite its obscurity is delightfully appealing. The works are placed in their historical context in the booklet note by Stefano Aresi, who writes, “To listen to the flute concertos of these composers is to be transported to the atmosphere of everyday music-making in Naples, that of the private concerts in the aristocratic palaces. They give a good idea of the extremely high average quality of the compositions habitually consumed by the cream of Neapolitan society, perfectly representing the taste of an era and the outstanding virtuosity of the performers who were regularly employed there.”

IMPORTThe piano works of American composer Charles Tomlinson Griffes represent a remarkable musical achievement. Griffes was active as a composer for little more than twelve years. Nevertheless, he produced pieces of great maturity that are both concise and extraordinarily powerful, showing the contemporary European influences to which he was exposed but also demonstrating a highly individual compositional voice. Roman Sketches, his most famous work, includes “The White Peacock” — an acknowledged Impressionist masterpiece — while the final movement, “Clouds,” heralds the language of modernism. Almost all of Griffes’s piano music is present here, played by his compatriot Garrick Ohlsson, who here applies the full force of his interpretive and technical prowess.

IMPORTYoung virtuoso Chloë Hanslip and York Bowen specialist Danny Driver join forces to present Bowen’s complete works for violin and piano. Many of these works have never been recorded or indeed published before, and have been excavated from the archives by Driver himself. This double album is therefore a valuable resource for admirers of a composer whom Hyperion has done so much to champion through recordings. This body of work includes juvenilia, miniatures (written with an eye to academic performance during Bowen’s years as a professor at the Royal Academy of Music, but all impressive enough in quality to be concert works), his two Violin Sonatas, a Suite and a number of single-movement works. All show a superb composer of chamber music, a genuine original with a performer’s ear.

IMPORTPreviously Available as CDA 66945 (034571169453) Deleted April 2012 The oblivion which has overtaken Eugen d’Albert in the second half of the twentieth century would have surprised anyone who saw his prodigious rise to fame in the 1880s and ‘90s. He was known then as one of the world’s greatest pianists, had studied with Liszt, and knew Brahms. From his teens, there began to emerge a body of composition which showed a maturity well beyond his years and seemed to produce a fusion of the then-incompatible schools of the “moderns” (Liszt and Wagner) and the “traditionalists” (Brahms and his followers). D’Albert’s piano concertos have been recorded to much acclaim by Piers Lane, who is featured on this mid-priced Helios series reissue of the composer’s works for solo piano.

IMPORTOn this live recording from the Chapelle Royale at the Chateau de Versailles, Olivier Schneebeli and Les Pages & les Chantres du Centre de musique baroque de Versailles illuminate Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s admirable synthesis of Italian chiaroscuro and the radiant grace of the French Baroque. The disc presents two of the composer’s Histoires sacrées — Judith sive Bethulia liberata and Caedes Sanctorum Innocentium. Stimulated by his years of training in Rome, these works represent a kind of “sacred theatre.” They deploy unprecedented vocal and instrumental invention to portray major episodes from the Old and New Testaments, focusing on their emotional and psychological aspects.

IMPORTLSO Live’s The Panufnik Legacies offers a collection of new works by ten emerging young composers. These pieces were commissioned as part of the LSO Panufnik Scheme, which began in 2005 and each year offers six composers the opportunity to write a three minute piece for the London Symphony Orchestra under the guidance of renowned composer Colin Matthews. The scheme was devised by the orchestra in association with Lady Panufnik in memory of her late husband, the composer Sir Andrzej Panufnik. This recording showcases the works of selected composers from across the first five years of the scheme. François-Xavier Roth leads the orchestra in music by Andrew McCormack, Christian Mason, Charlie Piper Flēotan, Eloise Gynn Sakura, Edward Nesbit, Jason Yarde, Martin Suckling, Christopher Mayo, Elizabeth Winters and Vlad Maistorovici.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSD Sir Colin Davis conducts the London Symphony Orchestra and chorus and a stellar cast of soloists in a concert performance

of Weber’s eerily fantastical opera, Der Freischütz. Der Freischütz is heralded as one of the cornerstones of Romantic opera, drawing on traditional German folk tunes and elements of Romanticism for the first time in the history of opera. The evocative and colorful orchestration is particularly impressive in the “Wolf ’s Glen” scene — long considered the most gruesomely expressive rendering of evil ever found in a musical score. Many listeners may be familiar with this opera without even knowing it; several of the melodies have been adapted as hymn tunes and the overture is regularly performed as a stand-alone work in the concert hall.

“Viewing Weber as one of Wagner’s major precursors, Davis presents the opera on the grandest of scales, with big orchestral forces, and a pair of established Wagnerian

leads in Simon O’Neill’s Max and Christine Brewer’s Agathe.”—THE GUARDIAN

In ce lebrat ion of Verdi’s anniversary year, the Mariinsky label presents a high-definition video recording of Verdi’s Attila, led by maestro Valery Gergiev, produced by Arturo Gama and featuring acclaimed Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov in the title role. A two-time GRAMMY® Award winner for his Verdi readings, Abdrazakov has quickly established himself as one of opera’s most sought-after basses. Since making his La Scala debut in 2001 at only 25, the Russian singer has become a mainstay at leading houses worldwide. Filmed in the Mariinsky Opera House, the video includes a stunning picture gallery of scenes from the performance. As is the case with many of Verdi’s operas, Attila is imbued with the spirit of Risorgimento, the national liberation movement of the Italian people against foreign rule and for the unification of Italy. Looking ahead, Attila is the first of four opera videos that are planned for release on the Mariinsky label in 2013.

IMPORTVia Crucis is one of Franz Liszt’s boldest and most original works. Its musical inspiration, which ranges from Gregorian chant to Lutheran chorales, is expressed in extremely modern harmonies that presage the coming atonal revolution. Diapason d’Or winner Jean-Claude Pennetier joins the Estonian ensemble Vox Clamantis on this program, which is completed by Liszt piano pieces on a religious theme and plainchant from the liturgy of Holy Week, one of the major sources of inspiration for Via Crucis.

IMPORTGrave, agile, majestic and picturesque, the keyboard output of Francois Couperin, with its array of indispensable ornaments and piquant details, enables us to follow all the impulses of the soul of “the most poetic of our harpsichord composers,” as Debussy called him. Performed here on the piano, which brings them its own special color, these harpsichord pieces, in their various moods, retain all their inimitable charm in the hands of Israeli pianist Iddo Bar-Shaï.

IMPORTConjuratio, Mirare’s collection of music by German composer Matthias Weckmann, brings to light a body of work that deserves far greater attention than it has received to date. Weckmann was a student of Heinrich Schütz and rose through the ranks to become one of the leading musicians of Hamburg. He was the organist at two major churches and founded the city’s Collegium Musicum. Much of the music heard here, admirably performed by the Ricercar Consort led by Philippe Pierlot, was inspired by Weckmann’s experiences associated with a terrible epidemic of plague that decimated Hamburg in 1663. Among its victims were his wife and many friends and colleagues. These tragic events inspired him to write inspired works that evoke images of desolation and destruction, but also struggle and hope.

DOMESTICIn 2001, Philip Glass composed the music for the film Naqoyqatsi: Life as War. It was the last film in a trilogy by director Godfrey Reggio that featured only images and music. When the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra invited Glass to be a creative director for its Boundless Series during the 2011-12 season, Glass thought of his cello concerto and its possible life beyond film. The CSO commissioned the Cello Concerto No.2 — Naqoyqatsi and gave the composer the opportunity to have it reborn as a proper concerto. The resulting recording is drawn from the live performances. This dynamic seven-movement work is conducted here by long-time Glass champion Dennis Russell Davies with soloist Matt Haimovitz.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDConductor Pierre Monteux had one of the longest musical careers in recent times, exceeded only by Pablo Casals and Leopold Stokowski. A champion of new music, he led the premières of many works, among them Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring (which caused a notorious audience riot) and the work recorded here, Ravel’s glorious ballet Daphnis et Chloé. Monteux assumed the position of music director of the London Symphony Orchestra in 1961 at age 86. The historic remastered recordings on this hybrid SACD date from this period and include the Rapsodie espagnole, Pavane pour une infante défunte and the complete Daphnis et Chloé.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDOn this release, part of Praga’s Reminiscences series of remastered historic recordings, four legendary artists prove the timelessness of the music of Camille Saint-Saëns. Pianist Emil Gilels, violinists Isaac Stern and Arthur Grumiaux and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich dazzle in solo concertos by this eclectic composer, written during a revival of the great classical forms in the late 1800s. Their partners in these works — conductors Eugene Ormandy, André Cluytens, Jean Fournet and Sir Malcolm Sargent — are legendary in their own right and make this SACD a must-have for any serious collector.

IMPORTOn October 28, 1949, former child prodigy Ginette Neveu boarded a plane in Paris with her pianist brother Jean-Paul to fly to America for a four-month concert tour. Tragically, the plane never reached its destination. These recordings of her three final concerts — September 21st in Stuttgart with her brother, September 25th under Hans Rosbaud in Baden-Baden and October 20th at the Salle Pleyel with her brother — are a musical testament to one of the greatest violinists of her era.

IMPORTOn this disc, Frédéric Desenclos performs a rich anthology of the organ music of Louis Marchand, who settled in Paris at the end of Lully’s life and died one year before the first performance of Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie. These works reveal the full dimensions of his output, where humor courts with seriousness, innovation mixes with mastery of form, and studied compositional procedures are balanced by sheer pleasure of timbre. Desenclos is the resident organist of the Chapelle Royale at the Chateau de Versailles, organ professor at the Orleans Conservatoire and musical director of the acclaimed Ensemble Pierre Robert.

The brilliant writing and talented musicians combine to reveal a pared down approach to the music they have been playing with excellence for over twenty-five years. IMPORT File in: JazzBrilliant musical explorer Médéric Collignon likes to revisit the work of those who inspired him. After Ennio Morricone and Miles Davis, the cornetist’s unbridled imagination turns to the legendary progressive-rock band King Crimson. Originally conceived as a stage project, A la recherche du Roi Frippé is now available on CD. Collignon plunged himself into the integral work of the band, studying every version to find the best and reinterpret them with his own energy. On the album he is joined by his group Jus de Bocse and a string octet, which adds a touch of the classical baroque. This is King Crimson as you’ve never imagined. As Collignon says, “Stop wondering if it is rock or jazz. Wonder if you’re ready to listen with your heart and your body.”

IMPORTFile in: JazzBrother Stoon is the first album by up-and-coming 25-year-old saxophonist Baptiste Herbin, recorded in January 2011 at Studio de Meudon. Despite his youth, he has already displayed a striking and powerful technique and quality of tone. A student of Jean Jacques Rulhmann and Julien Lourau in his native Chartres and Jean Charles Richard in Paris, his music on this debut is an engaging tribute to the bop tradition. Each note will captivate listeners.

IMPORTFile in: Jazz On this striking album, Daniel John Martin’s body and violin become one; his singular voice seems to embrace the notes as would a brook rocking in its bed. The new compositions regrouped here on Urban Gypsy will acquaint you with Martin’s energy and subtlety, his power as well as his restraint. The end result is a moment of pure jazz poetry, with a touch of gypsy soul, bearing a message of hope and of life that you must discover now.

IMPORTFile in: Jazz Born into a resolutely Mediterranean culture, Kamlo Barré borrows from the universal nomadic musical language of Andalusia, the Arabs and Hungarian or Romany gypsies. Oriental Minor Blues is a tribute to the itinerant lifestyle of nomadic peoples. The rare finesse of Barré’s guitar is an extension of his voice and conversation, his history, with all its joys and suffering and his own itinerary. On this album, his guitar adopts by turns the accents of the Saracens’ mandola, the chitarra battente of the Italians, the lutes of the Moors and, of course, the guitars of Tziganes and Romany gypsies.

DOMESTICFile in: World / IndiaIn October 2011, at the seasoned age of 91, Ravi Shankar invited his long-time tabla accompanist, Tanmoy Bose, to his home in Encinitas, California for an informal recording session. Over four days, they worked in Shankar’s living room, recording seven different ragas. The resulting music is pure Shankar — a pairing of deep musical experience and brilliant technique performed with the energy and passion he brings to his live concerts. The first four of these sessions, released in 2011, won a GRAMMY® award for Best World Music Album. The Living Room Sessions Part 2 is no less noteworthy, with three of the last session recordings made by Maestro Ravi Shankar before his death in December 2012. Shankar’s playing is characterized by such intensity, clarity, and delight that it reveals, once more, the maestro’s musical genius as something to reckon with, even in his tenth decade.

IMPORTFile in: World / FranceDroit dans la Gueule du Loup (walking straight into the lion’s den) is an album overflowing with anger, tears, splendors, sorrows, strength and wonders. It is anything but a safe collection of inoffensive songs. Armed with the words of songwriter Guillaume Favray, Melissmell wanders on through a world of verist melancholies and dark poetry. This new album features pianist Matu (Mano Solo, Indochine) and guitarist Daniel Jamet (Mano Negra, Mano Solo). Christine Ott also joins the three of them, playing Ondes Martenot on three songs.

IMPORTFile in: World / FranceIn the tradition of Miles Davis, Weather Report and others taking jazz to new shores in the early seventies, Troc was a legendary yet short-lived quintet whose only album was issued in 1972 — a rough diamond from the seams of jazz/rock and other hallucinatory experiments. Drummer André Ceccarelli recently reformed the band to record Troc 2011 for Universal and its success prompted this reissue by Frémeaux of the band’s epic first album — now available for the first time on CD — together with two bonus titles recorded at that same historic session.

IMPORTFile in: World / TurkeyThis release celebrates the Bektashi ceremony of the djem, which features semah sacred dancing and sung poetry accompanied on the saz lute. The djem is both a liturgy commemorating the founding myths of the Bektashi faith and a fraternal agape (ritual feast) uniting an entire community. Music, listened to with great intensity, is a link between all that permeates this entire ritual. In these recordings from the Turkish region of Antalya, two ‘choirs’ are present: one, conducted by Müzaffer Görgülü, recorded in 2004; the other, conducted by Süleyman Can, in the ‘mother’ house (the house of the ancestral djem) in 2011.
