Present status of the project

Through the capacity building activity of WESTPAC-HAB project, collaborating HAB researchers are increasing in the region.

- IOC/WESTPAC-HAB continues training courses and collaborative research activities.

- Leader of the IOC/WESTPAC-HAB project is now changed from Dr. Fukuyo (Univ. Tokyo, Japan) to Dr. Iwataki (YamagataUniv., Japan).

- HAB researchers in the region hope to promote some projects under a collaboration with WESTPAC-HAB, e.g.,- Cochlodinium: taxonomy and distribution- Eutrophication: comparative study on species composition- Mitigation: application of HAB knowledge

4-4 Scientific development

For future scientific activities, all steering members can propose research plan and designate working group members under the collaboration of IOC/WESTPAC-HAB.

Taxonomy of microalgae

Distribution of microalgae

Revise the identification and add new taxa (photographs) of microalgae taxonomy database of western Pacific region. This information will be used for revision of “Marine Phytoplanktonof the Western Pacific” in future (2nd Edition).Call for photos of marine microalgae (>300 dpi, ca. 40 mm long),for all steering members of WESTPAC-HAB!

By use of our taxonomic back ground and international collaboration in Western Pacific region, distribution of some targeted HAB species can be compiled.

(Dr. Lim Po Teen)BHAB sp., Alexandrium spp., Gymnodininoid (e.g. Takayama/Karenia spp.).
