“THE ACF”Apalachicola, Chattahoochee, Flint

Rivers System Lake Seminole lies within the borders of both Georgia and Florida and has 37,500 acres of water, 376 miles of shoreline, and over 22,000 acres of surrounding land. It was originally authorized as the Jim Woodruff Lock and Dam Project by the River and Harbor Act of 1946. Jim Woodruff Lock was the first of three locks and dams constructed for navigation, hydro-power, recreation and related purposes on the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint River systems. Construction of the project began in 1947 and was completed in 1957. The area is very diverse with hills and bluffs, rivers and streams. Pine, oak, gum, cypress, and our famous wiregrass, provides habitat for an abundance of wildlife, including both game and non-game animals, and many threatened and endangered species of plants and animals. Abundant aquatic vegetation in the rivers, streams, sloughs and sinkholes provides for over 79 known species of fish. The area around Lake Seminole is rich in history, having been occupied by man for at least 10,000 years. Among other Native Americans, the Seminoles lived here until around 1825, and it is they for whom the lake is named. The Spanish and English have also occupied the land and fought battles, as described by the many historic markers throughout the area. Steamboats once kept the ports busy, and the area is still known for its agricultural production. More information about the area can be found at the Resource Management Office, or by contacting the local towns around the lake. Or come visit and see for yourself!

For Your Safety

Keep the little ones safe by watching them around the water. Also be aware that like any natural area, Eastbank Campground has a variety of wildlife, including alligators, venomous snakes and spiders. Remember not to feed the wildlife so that they do not become a nuisance.
