JOIN US!ArtsFest 2013....How did it all begin?
One sunny day in May 1996, Athens Area High School art teacher Dave Webster and a
few of his pottery students decided to take the pottery wheels outside and began “throwing
some pots”--a term used for making a pot on the wheel. Not too many minutes passed
before those at work discovered they had an audience. Several neighbors took an interest in
what was happening and were fascinated by the hypnotic act of making a pot on the
spinning wheel.
The following May, Mr. Webster decided to turn it up a notch and host a day-long event
of students working on the wheels outdoors. He called it a festival--The First Annual
Throw-a-Thon. Mr. Webster invited elementary students, teachers, friends, and family
members to “throw” with the pottery students.
However, even though this festival was titled “The First Annual”, it was 1999 before
another festival was held. A group of students, led by Jeremy Hicks, challenged Mr. Webster
to bring back the Festival and expand it to an ArtsFest. The students encouraged fellow art
teacher, Louella Gilbert, to join in the effort. With the support of the Athens Area School
District and then-superintendent Tom Salpino, the 1999 ArtsFest was off and running.
Sixteen artisans participated and hundreds of local residents attended the event.
With the help and drive of students and community members, the Fourteenth Annual
ArtsFest on May 4th & 5th, 2013, will host nearly 200 juried artisans and will expect to see
an attendance of over 40,000 strong from local communities and the surrounding areas of
New York and Pennsylvania and beyond.
Several groups from within the Athens Area School District will be hosting their own “fundraisers” during ArtsFest this year...
The AAHS Band Boosters will be sponsoring a photography contest both days. More information can be found for this awesome event on page 8.
The Lynch-Bustin PTG will be sponsoring a basket raffle in the lobby of Lynch-Bustin with funds going to support projects and field trips for students.
The AAHS Future Business Leaders of America will be hosting “The Wrecking Ball”, corn hole, and a bounce house.
Harlan Rowe Junior Science Olympiad will be holding a Chinese Auction under the main Information tent. Items are donated by attending vendors.
AAHS Interact will be selling water. Proceeds will benefit the purchase of water purification systems in other countries through Rotary International. For more information, check out www.sawyer.com
The AASD Class of 2016 will be hosting goldfish races.
The AAHS FFA Chapter will be hosting a Petting Zoo.
Aktion KWEST will be hosting a miniature golf course.
The AAHS Football Boosters will once again be running a concession stand that features hamburgers, hot dogs, and the famous Wildcat Chicken Spiedie. Cold drinks and other items will also be available.
Art created by students throughout the Athens Area School District will be on display in several areas.

Athens High School History Club
Did you just pass someone and think, “I recognize that person?” That might just be the case as you make your way through the Athens Artsfest. This year the Athens History Club members will be dressed in costumes of “Faces of the Past”. With a yearlong endeavor to “bring history to life,” members will be dressed in historical dress from the Colonial age to the Roaring Twenties. Stop and take a picture with one of our members or strike up a conversation, you never know what you may learn. Also, if you would like to satisfy your craving for a sweet treat check out our booth amongst the Artisans under the Big Tent, we will be selling gourmet cupcakes. If you are looking for an antique look for your houses we are also selling handmade soap dispensers. Bring the “aged” look of the past to your 21st Century homes. Finally, try your luck at
our Basket RafNles we will be rafNling off on Sunday. All baskets are community focused one being called the “Taste of the Town” and the other “Spring Has Sprung”.
Can you beat World Chess Federation Master Alex Dunne at a game of chess? The first lucky challenger who beats him will receive a handcrafted ceramic chess
set made by Dave Webster.

D i g g e r Jones is a power trio w i t h t h e sound of a
much larger band. The group takes a down-home approach to mixing roots music with jam inspired rock.
All members originally hail from the central NY area and are now in the process of writing and recording new material for their debut album release. The trio can be found performing their blend of blues, funk and rock around New York with plans for more extensive touring in 2011.

The Red Eyes Formed in the winter of '07, the band started playing shows locally. With venues such as Athens Artsfest and the summer sound stage at the Root's, we were definitely a small town band with big time dreams. The band has evolved much since then playing many private parties, bars, fundraisers, and more stuff that we really can't remember. Our similar yet very different understandings and preferences of music have kept us together. All graduating from the class of '08 from Athens, we have been best friends for a very long time. However, until recently did we decide to form a band. It's unusual to have such a connection with the people that are in the band but we really are a tight group that has stuck together through thick and thin. We lost a member in December of 2010, Ian Wiles, to Thalassemia. It tore us down, but at the same time brought us closer than ever. His life was an inspiration to all of us and today, we still play for him. Love you E!

The Gospel Way is a 5 piece Gospel Bluegrass Group from Central New York. Because of our love for the Lord and the music, we have partnered in the mission of sharing God's free gift through His word and song.
Formed in 2003, we have played for many churches, festivals, and other types of gatherings. We believe that God has brought us together to share His Good News with those whom He puts before us.

Nate & Kate met and began playing together in Binghamton, NY in 2005, and self-booked a 3-month tour of the Eastern-US that fall (’05). They have continued touring, promoting, and writing, and released their debut album, FAME BY FRAME, late in 2007.
Their music is an eclectic mix of modern folk, humor, and juggling fit for old, young, and all those in between.

The Rockets were originally formed in 1976 by three Towanda natives Kurt Foster, bass and lead vocals, Kevin Murray, keyboards, guitar, lead vocals, and Jim Hoag, guitar and lead vocals. The last edition was drummer Tim Chamberlain from Troy, PA. With their mix of superb vocals and lay in the pocket rock and roll grooves, the Rockets quickly became one of the area's premier Classic Rock Band.
Justin Raynor grew up in the small town of Bentley Creek, Pennsylvania. Justin has displayed a love of music his entire life, yet he did not discover his love for acoustic guitar until his freshman year in college. Justin received his first guitar as a graduation gift from his uncle, Scott Bolster.
Justin began teaching himself how to play guitar, not with sheet music, but by listening, and using memorization. He then began to incorporate singing into his practice and, after much positive feedback, he ventured into the entertainment industry.
Justin now entertains hundreds of people at numerous events throughout the area. He currently resides in Bentley Creek with his wife, Ashley, and two children, Ella and Easton.
For more information pertaining to Justin’s upcoming events, visit his Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/justinraynor13?fref=ts
Ellis Callahan and Drew Bastian of Crooked Son lost a guitar player to Nebraska. They decided
that rockin' only needed the two of them anyway. Their only concern is raw rock 'n roll be it Classic, Southern, Alternative, Blues, or Ironic. Whatever it is, it's raucous. These two have higher aspirations however. Be ye warned...

The ArtsFest committee wanted to give back to the community, so we combined the creative skills of student potters with the culinary skills of some excellent area cooks and created the annual Souper Bowl project. This year's event was called Fuel Your Neighbor, with funds raised going to The Bridge for fuel vouchers to area residents. Pictured from left to right are Jeannine
Duncan, Athens Area Education Association, Bobette and Dick Friend accepting a check for $1,800 on behalf of The Bridge, and Dave Webster,
ArtsFest creator and director. Watch for the annual Souper Bowl event around Valentine's Day each year.
