South Coast Terminals, Inc., of Houston has opened this new hazardouschemical drum filling station which the company claims employs the latesttechnology to till drums with toxic chemicals while minimizing the risk ofexposure to personnel. Chemicals are pumped out of railroad cars ortrucks, which can be positioned within 30 feet of the facility, and injectedinto drums. The drums are enclosed in a filling chamber from which

vapors are automatically removed. The chamber is equipped with a drychemical deluge system to extinguish flash fires. No hoses are used, so therisk of leaks due to faulty hoses is minimized. Safety showers, selfcontained breathing apparatus and communications equipment are nearby for easy access by workers. Digital scales insure that each drum is filledwithin one tenth of one percent of its desired weight.

West Mrica,1947.Thirty-three years ago, when Delta Line pioneered

regular U.S. Flag service from the Gulf to West Africa, there were few developed harbors along the entire3,000-mile coastline from Dakar to Matadi.

Each voyage was an adventure. Our ships wouldsail along the coast and anchor just beyond the surf.Cargoes were loaded onto small boats powered bymen and oars. It was a demanding test of skill andseamanship, an experience not soon forgotten by thecrews of those Delta ships.

Delta helped establish trade with the nations ofWest Africa, and continues to play a vital role in theeconomic development of the region.

Today, we serve the modern ports of West Africawith five purpose-built vessels, that sail frequentlyfrom all major U.S. Gulf ports. These great shipsare backed by an experienced team at home, and anetwork of the best agents on the African continent.

And it’s the same wherever we go in the world -South America, Central America, the Caribbean. In50 countries, on three continents, Delta is committedto service, integrity and excellence.

In what may be maritime history, Bay Houston Towing Company recently christenedthe four newest members of the fleet all on the same day. Left to right: The Captain W.D.Haden, the W.D. Haden, II, the Barbara H. Neuhaus and the Mark K.

AFAMILY AFFAIR.

The biggest harbor towingcompany on the Texas Gulf Coastis no faceless corporation. It’sBay-Houston Towing. And it’sowned and operated by theHadens, a family that has beeninvolved in the towing businessfor over 100 years.

That’s why their fleet of dieseltugs, all the way up to the 4,200-

horse-power Captain W.D. Haden,bears family names.

Doing the j ob better thananyone else can is more than achallenge.

It’s a family tradition.
