Mechanical fixtures

ME mechanical stand-alone fixtureFor functional tests, final tests, smaller ICT tasks up to approx. 300 probes

The ME series is the consequent enhancement of our bestseller series MA1x. Improved design, higher mechanical rigidity and a new selection of even more high-quality materials make our popular fixture series fit even for high-volume production lines. New bearings provide a smooth-running closing of the lid and allow higher probe forces.Similar to the previous version, the mechanical system is actuated by hand with the closing of the lid. The linear travel after closing of the lid allows very precise and wear-free contact movement. The ME series allows contacting of up to 300 probes (at 2N each) without any effort. The rigidity of the mechanical systems would actually allow higher forces; however the operator has to apply more strength then, too.Two-side contacting (top/bottom) is easy to achieve due to the long linear

travel (17 mm). Mechanical or pneumatic side access units are easy to integrate. The ME series is very often used as a basis for complex contacting in various levels and for component tests in the housing.Order the ME series in any stage of customisation – as raw self-dril-ling kit, just drilled, probes mounted only or ready-wired as ready-togo fixture.

3 different sizes are available:

MEW Mechanical exchangeable cassette systemLike the ME stand-alone series, the WKMLC exchangeable cassette systems were also enhanced and improved. This resulted in the MEWG (basic unit) and the MEWK (cassette). The same mechanical system used for the ME1x mechanical fixtures was combined with a high-performance, wear-proof interface. This in-terface makes it possible to quickly change very low-cost and easy-to-handle cas-settes without any tools. The very reliable “Probe to Sip contact” interface cannot be compared with a con-

nector interface. The long life time of the probes and sip contacts avoids time-consuming debugging due to worn-out connectors. The transfer interface can hold up to 480 pins and is compatible with the older WKMLC interface

Linear arm fixtureThe ATX linear arm fixtures allow low-cost contacting of smaller PCBs mainly for programming and functional tests as well as for laboratory tasks and test series. The linear, vertical stroke of the push fingers guarantees pre-cise contacting – even for small probes in small grids.

Can be supplied in three versions:

LHS-A Order no. 100 540 is the smallest version up to 50 probes (approx.

100 N) and a product size of 85 x 85 mm

LHS-B Order no. 100 542 for up to 50 probes (2 N) and a product size of

125 x 125 mm

LHS-D Order no. 100 773 with double lever system

The LHS-D is the connecting link between the LHS and the ME series. It is more stable than the smaller versions and allows easier integration of switch contacts or top-side probes with its free space over the PCB.It is suited for up to 100 probes (approx. 200N) with a product size of 125 x 125 mm.All LHS linear arm fixtures are delivered with 20 push rods and 20 PCB spacers.

Vacuum ICT fixtureThe ATX ICT vacuum fixture is designed to meet all common ICT test system requirements. For example: Acculogic/Scorpion, Aeroflex, Agilent/HP, Digitaltest, Reinhardt, Rhode & Schwarz, Spea, Teradyne/Genrad and many more.

Fixtures with customised vacuum cassetteA great feature provided by ATX is a vacuum cassette customised to the dimensions of the PCB. The advantages are:

One fixture can be used for more than one project – it is even possible to add a new PCB to an existing fixture Single-, dual- or multiple-well fixtures The vacuum-free frame makes it possible to easily add user-defined components: switches, displays or actuation elements. And there is no need to think about sealing The smaller probe plate reduces the weight for better han-dling The lower volume of the vacuum area makes the fixture fast-er (the vacuum zone can be evacuated more quickly) and the probes hit harder for better contact

We provide a wide range of different housings, interfaces and product sizes

Top-side contacts Precise top-side contacts The linear way down over the last 30 mm of travel allows prob-lem-free lowering of the upper probe bed on to the compo-nents (optional for high components) The opening angle is 90° – this allows free access to the UUT and makes it easy for the user to change the board

TWISTERWorkflow-optimised rotation fixture

The Twister concept was especially developed for tasks where fast handling is essential. By changing the PCB on the contact side while the test is running, the time for handling is nearly eliminated. An automatically opening protection cover makes the twister perfectly ergonomic. This en-ables the user to work free of fatigue. A bi-level option is implement-ed (for ICT and functional test) as well as the possibility of using the fixture as a clamp shell fixture (top and bottom contacts). The system is either controlled by a ready programmed SPC or the test-ing system. The SPC programme is available as a standard ready-to-go solution or in any customised version. The Twister is designed as an exchangeable cassette system with a special focus on a fast and tool-free mounting of the cassettes. Economically priced cassettes ensure that the system pays for it-self within a short time. Like all other ATX exchangeable systems, the Twister is equipped with a robust and long-lasting “Sip-to-

probe interface”.With a contact pressure sufficient for approx. 400 probes (2 N) and an interface with 400 pins, the Twister offers a wide range of possible applications. The largest-possible PCB size lies between 125 x 200 mm and 110 x 225 mm. The size depends on the geom-etry of the board, because the board carrier is shaped as a semi-circle. The pneumatic drive is adapted to the rough production environment and long-term use.

The interface to the test system is customised for any test system on the market. It can be used as a set-on-top fixture for other ICT fixtures or as stand-alone solution.

ATX rotary tablesCustomised rotary tables for combination of vari-ous test activities

The ATX rotary tables are customised exactly to the needs of the customer. The combination pos-sibilities are virtually unlimited. ICT, functional test, optical inspection, printing/marking or even mounting of additional parts can be combined in one system. This saves a lot of handling time be-tween the individual stations.Special designs such as work places for handi-capped people have already been implemented. Most systems were designed as exchangeable cassette systems to allow various products on one system. ATX provides project management, design, manu-facturing and integration of third party-elements as well as the complete production of the system incl. switching cabinet construction and SPC pro-gramming.

16

Force analysisCalculation of the force exerted on the test sample by the fixture

With the help of the ATX calculation software, it is possible to make statements on possible bending of the test sample and to optimise the fixture. The resulting values are relative values. They can be used as an aid for making decisions re-garding the development of the fixture. They are no absolute values, because the E mod-ules of circuit boards, for example, can vary significantly. Depending on the orientation and number of the glass fibres, type of resin, number of holes for vias, etc., these E modules can vary. These relative values, however, allow state-ments as to whether strong bending is proba-ble at positions, which hold sensitive compo-nents. If, for example, there is strong bending below or close to a BGA component, it should be tested thoroughly whether there is the possibility of reducing these forces or absorbing them in a better way.

There are the possibilities for reducing bending:

Moving or reducing the number of pins, which leads to a reduced exertion of force Improvement of the push finger arrangement by:– setting additional push fingers or surface push fingers– moving components on the board in order to make it possible to set push fingers at critical positions

In a risk assessment, checks are made as to whether there are sensitive components, which possibly could be damaged, at positions where there is strong bending. Insensitive components, such as THT resistors or similar, represent a smaller risk at such a position compared to BGAs or other sensitive SMD components.Setting the push fingers always includes having to decide between the necessary amount in order to be able to absorb the forces and a minimum distance to the components. Usually one tries to keep the push fingers as far away from the component as possible so that no components are damaged even in case there are tolerances in the assembly. On the other hand, the forces need to be absorbed.

If the calculation shows strong bending at a certain position, the following risk assessment must be made:

Are there components that could be damaged? Is the deformation so strong that the board could be damaged? Is it possible to change this easily? For example, can push fingers be added at vacant positions? Is it necessary to redesign the assembly in order to enable testing? For example, can test points or a compo-nent be moved in order to make room for push fingers?

The ATX stress analysis is the optimum basis for this risk assessment

Automatic quality checkATX has developed a fixture test concept that provides the possibility of testing the fixtures in a way very similar to the later debugging process. The benefit for the customer is clear: a fully-tested fixture saves time and mon-ey at start-up. The principal elements of the test concept is a special ATX-developed testing device for examining fixtures with up to 7680 pins. Due to this pin range, it is possible to test fixtures for all test systems on the market. The hardware, optimised for opens-and-contin-ue tests, makes it possible to automatically test all pins for shorts and for contact with a short-ing plate. Another important checking medium is the loc-pin function that allows the checking of all special channels with an interactive checking pin. These tests exactly correspond to the checking procedures used by the customers for testing fix-tures.

After the fixture is finished, it has to pass the fol-lowing test run:

Mechanical test and checking for vacuum tight-ness

Continue test of all probes with a shorting plate. The contact of each probe to the contact plate is measured

Shorting test of all probes against all probes in-cluding check for double wiring Interactive test with the loc-pin function for inspection of special channel wiring

The interactive test allows the quality manager to identify short circuits as well as incorrectly positioned wires between test pins as well as between test pins and drive pins and special pins.

The results are logged in a file and stored with the rest of the fixture data to ensure complete documentation
