The methodInnovative Krautkramer technologyensures another step forward inmobile hardness testing: the TIVmethod (Through Indenter Viewing),based on hardness testing accordingto Vickers, makes it possible to ”seethrough” the Vickers diamond bymeans of special optics. Thehardness is measured under load; assoon as the test load is reached, theimage of the test indentation istransferred and evaluated directly,automatically, and quickly.

Mobile hardness testerwith the special view

The advantages – your benefitThe TIV hardness tester can be usedirrespective of the material – with-out any additional calibration. Youcan use the same instrument tomeasure the hardness of all sorts ofmaterials without any referencespecimens and without any labori-ous settings: from steel and nonfer-rous metals through plastics, carbidemetals, glass, and ceramics up todifferent coatings.

The static application of the testload reduces the vibration of the testobject and therefore the influence ofthe test material’s elastic propertieson the test result.

Yet another benefit: you can use theTIV to measure even very thin testobjects, such as coils or sheet metaland metal foils, on which stationaryor mobile hardness testers havepreviously failed, without anyproblem. Consequently, hardnesstesting becomes independent notonly of the material but also of themass and geometry of the test ob-ject. This means that the TIV opensup new application fields for mobilehardness testing.

It goes without saying that all theadvantages you already know fromour proven hardness testers remainor were improved, e.g. direction in-dependance, user friendliness, datamanagement. Plus a lot more.

Measurement and evaluation:direct, automatic, fast

Another Krautkramer innovationAs the first portable instrument ever,the TIV does not determine the sizeof the indentation of the Vickersdiamond, and consequently thehardness of the material, indirectlybut directly: ”Through IndenterViewing” means that you can seethe indentation of the Vickers dia-mond "grow" on the surface of thetest object at the same time as thetest load is applied – this is ensuredby special optics and a CCD camera.As soon as the test load is reached,the indentation is automaticallyevaluated and transferred, whichmeans that the diagonals are direct-ly determined, without making adetour via a measuring microscope.Your benefits: the measurement isnot only faster but also excludes sub-jective errors in the determination ofdiagonal lengths. Plus: by representa-tion on the display, the TIV is the onlyhardness tester to enable direct con-trol and immediate evaluation of themeasurement quality. In addition, theimage of the indentation enablesdirect recognition of the diamond'scondition.

The special instrumentThe color LCD of the TIV hardnesstester does not only show you theimage of the diamond’s indentationbut also the directly displayed read-ing in the selected hardness scale.The graphic user interface shown onthe display is adapted to the knownWindows standard. In this way, youwill swiftly have a good grasp of howthe instrument should be operated,irrespective of if you want to config-ure, measure, evaluate, or store. Thespecial extra: You do not need amouse to select functions becausethe instrument has a touch screencapability using a pen. However, asan alternative, conventional push-buttons are also available for mostof the functions.

The easy operationThree main menus make it easier foryou to access the most importantinstrument functions – and you’llalways reach your destination by just afew ”screen clicks”. Do you want tosee your test series as a curve, histo-gram, or statistics? A click is all ittakes. The conversion is just as easyfor you by selecting another hardnessscale. In the menu ”Data”, you canstore your results plus image of theindentation in an easy and straightfor-ward way.

The probe contains high-tech features –the optical system and the CCD camera enable

viewing through the diamond. Direction independance is also a proof of the

patented Krautkramer technology: you canmeasure in any direction –

without any additional settings.

The mobile practiceYou can operate the TIV both with amains connection and with standardcells, or by means of our recharge-able battery pack which allowscharging inside the instrument. Aftera certain period of time, the displaygoes off, and it can be re-activatedby simply touching the touch screen.An automatic switch-off function istriggered after any variable period oftime – all data and settings are ofcourse maintained.

The user-friendly display of theTIV: you can see all the neces-sary information at a glanceduring the measurement. Tostore your data, simply createdirectories as required, theinput of alphanumerical data isno problem either.
