  • President's Corner By Virgil Lawyer

    BA '46

In my two years as President of the Alumni Association, I have had both gratifying and frustrating experiences.

It is gratifying to arrive in a city and be met by loyal, enthusiastic alumni. Their eyes sparkle as they talk of Har-ding, and they are anxious to know how the school is progressing and the plans for future service and expansion.

If we are requesting financial help, they are quick to accept their share of the load. If it is a drive for recruiting students. they are there with those they have influenced toward Harding.

Alumni such as these are not thinking now of how Harding can serve them but rather how they can serve Harding. When I take my departure from such alumni, I know that when their children enroll as students we are going to have loyal, enthusiastic students.

On the other hand, it is most frustrat-ing to be called aside by an alumnus and be given an earful of gripes and criticisms of Harding, concerning when the alumnus was a student and also what has taken place at Harding since his graduation.

The .alumnus states he cannot give to Harding and then tells of some slight or hurt suffered while he was a student. Or, if treated all right while at Harding, he now hears of terrible conduct by the present students and decides Harding just "isn't what it used to be."

There are some who continue to expect Harding to be their job getter and job keeper. If they wanted and did not get a certain position it must have been Harding's fault. Even when losing a job, some alumni have held the school responsible.

Several times a year we have alumni write and request our alumni mailing list. A decision was made years ago that the college would be very careful about permitting such a list to be used.

    -2

I know you alumni appreciate this de-cision. It was made for your protection.

Harding was not a perfect place when there were only 350 students as in the early 1940's. While the faculty and admin-istration were mostly right in their de-cisions at that time, there were occasions when I felt then, and feel now, they were wrong. Most decisions made on my be-half by my parents while I was grow-ing up were right and good but a few were wrong. I do not love or appreciate my parents any less because they erred a few times. They are human. The same applies to Harding College. I do not love and appreciate Harding any less because of a few errors in decision . This too, is human I know.

I hope our alumni will look at the overall picture. See the dozens going out to preach and serve in God's kingdom in the very difficult fields. See the teachers going into the areas where the church is weak and struggling. See the grad-uates, who have integrity and dedication, going into various professions. See those who are determined to give to others that same type of Christian education they have enjoyed at Harding.

Harding is the work of the Lord. It is for this reason we have grown and flourished. I am satisfied that we will continue to grow. It is certain we will make faster progress with the support of all our alumni. We solicit your good will and help.

If the reply is negative, we will not be deterred. Rather, we will be the more determined to see Harding succeed and prove her right to success by her devoted and loyal alumni.

Hundred Club Membership Climbs Response to the invitation to join the

Harding Hundred Club has been good and the club is off to a good start to-ward the goal of 1,000 members. The club, composed of alumni and ex-stu-dents who contribute $100 each year in support of their Alma Mater, was started September 1, 1965, the beginning of a new fiscal year for the college.

The plan is to incorporate 1,000 mem-bers who will contribute a minimum of $100 in addition to building or special programs. Won't you join the Harding Hundred Club and be responsible for greater accomplishment and service?

Present members are listed here. A careful check has been made to include all names, but if any name has been missed, please notify the Alumni Office.
