MESSAGE FROM NATIONAL PRESIDENT

ANTHONY LEUNG“Appreciation means the recognition of the quality, value, and magnitude of people and things. Appreciation means the act of thanks and gratitude and giving them their proper value. Appreciation is not the action for the past tense, but it is the great attitude of people for the future.”

It is near the end of the year 2015, and this is the last issue of Harbour Lights for the year. On the behalf of 2015 team, I would like to appreciate all of your support to our 2015 team and also full engagements in 2015 with our actions and appreciations to celebrate 100 years anniversary of JC movements (http://www.jci.cc/100years) and also 65th Anniversary of JCI Hong Kong (http://www.jcihk.org/).

Our JCIHK members are being young active citizens to create over 400 projects regarding community, education, labour and youth in a year for the betterment of HK society. As Positive & Young Active Citizens and JCI Hong Kong 2015 leaders, we have trained up more members to have positive thinking, problem solving skills, and to be future leaders to create positive change. These future leaders will share more positive values to our beloved community, care more for those who are in needs, create more ACF solutions to solve local district problems, and also change more challenges to opportunities.

Because we do always believe: That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life; That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations; That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise; That government should be of laws rather than of men; That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality; And that service to humanity is the best work of life.

This year, I am so honored to serve as your National President with the theme of “Action with Appreciation”. Time really files, I thank you for making 2015 a fabulous and memorable year, and wish you all a wonderful 2016 ahead!

Mr. George Hongchoy Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer,The Link Management Limited “Our sustainability efforts are built upon our belief that sustainability is good for those around us, and therefore good for our business. We are convinced that over the long term, a successful business is one that embraces the core principles of sustainability, pursuing a business model that enables responsible, equitable growth with minimal negative environmental impact and adds value to the community,” said George.

and lighting systems across our portfolio. We also implemented an extensive building management system to remotely manage shopping centre chillers across our air-conditioned properties – this is just the initial step in our plans to remotely monitor and control all aspects of energy consumption across our portfolio.”

More importantly, these initiatives were implemented with no negative impact on tenant operations or shopper experience.

Engaging Staff and the Community in SustainabilityGeorge strongly believes that the strength of Link is rooted in their culture of serving people first as a core value. They work hard to develop, and retain the best people in the company. Link strives to become an employer example, of choice by growing a workforce that makes us one of the most successful companies among their peers. They value their staff and encourage active and healthy work-life balance, the company also engage with them in many ways including: (1) Employee Unit Purchase Plan, (2) VMV surveys, (3) organising staff activities, and (4) open and transparent evaluations.

Enhancing Local and International Commitment to SustainabilityOver the years, Links have laid a strong foundation for running their business in a sustainable manner and for creating value for the community as a whole. Their inclusion in Hang Seng Corporate Sustainability Index, FTSE4Good Index and Dow Jones Sustainability Asia Pacific Index underscores their success in embedding corporate sustainability into company strategy and

Link's Sustainability Framework

Link's Sustainability Framework, consists of seven core elements, namely staff, corporate governance, environment, asset/brand, tenant, community and economy. It guides their

progress towards sustainability. These elements are presented in a circle, illustrating the firm's belief that all seven elements are equally important and necessary for sustainable development. Doing well in one particular element will also result in better performance in other elements.

Integrating Sustainability into OperationsAt Link, they strive to embed a culture of sustainability across all business units and in their daily operations. All new staff receive sustainability awareness training during orientation. They also encourage staff to participate in interdepartmental projects so that they can increase their awareness of how sustainability is incorporated across the operations.

Energy management has been a key part of Link's property management strategy. In addition to demonstrating disciplined cost control across all of the areas where it has oversight, the property management team introduced a number of energy saving initiatives, which has resulted in achieving our 20/20 vision in 2013. “Our active energy management programme saw us focused on the standardization and control of day-to-day operations of air-conditioning

operations, and recognises the progress they have made in advancing their mission of improving the lives of those around us.

Besides local level, Link is also committed to meeting global benchmarks and remaining at the forefront of corporate environmental and sustainability performance. Aligning their tenants, contractors and service providers with their corporate sustainability framework is critical as they move to address long range issues such as climate change, waste management and the impact on communities. The Tenant Academy and annual Service Provider Conference are two such platforms to increase interaction with stakeholders and is a step towards ensuring people and organisations choose to do business with them.

Promoting Sustainability to the PublicLink promotes sustainability to the general public by enriching and supporting local communities. They do so by providing better shopping environments, offering “Link Together Initiatives” and enhancing barrier free access facilities.

Link was among the first private corporations to promote barrier free access (“BFA”) facilities in Hong Kong, committing at least HK$200 million to ensure our properties are barrier free accessible.

They place high priority in creating value for the communities they serve, which is illustrated through their flagship community investment programme – Link Together Initiatives. Link utilises the shopping centre network to offer free venues to the organisations to promote their projects and services in addition to the financial support provided to the organisations.

Every year, Link contributes an amount up to 0.25% of its net property income from the previous financial year to The Initiatives. For the 2015/2016 funding cycle, a total of HK$10 million was donated to support the organisations to serve communities in need.

Link and UN Global CompactIn September 2012, Link became the first Hong Kong REIT to participate in the UN Global Compact. As a signatory of this initiative, Link REIT pledges to support and advance these values in their day-to-day operations. For example, they have incorporated UN Global Compact principles into their Annual Report 2014/2015, Chairman’s Statement , Chief Executive Officer’s Report and other area to reaffirm our commitment to the global initiative.

Training was offered to students on Active Citizen Framework and how to formulate sustainable solutions to tackle social challenges. Then the students were invited to make a presentation to suggest solutions after understanding more about the social challenges from ACF guests. Most solutions centred on effective communication between all sectors of society!

We appreciate Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Hong Kong Public Libraries for recognising the donation of books by JCI Hong Kong in the 1950’s and offering exhibition areas and conference rooms free of charge.

In addition, 280 posters summarising the essence of 18-District Roadshow were displayed at 80 MTR stations.

As a result, the impact made by JCI Hong Kong from 1950 to 2015 was made known to a wider range of the general public through the series of events and promotion comprising of the 18-District Roadshow.

We hope that the success of the 18-District Roadshow would raise the awareness of appreciating the goodness of people who have made selfless contribution to society and the importance of bringing all sectors of society together to make the world a better place!

Best National Growth and Development Program Award Be Better Index Press Conference

Also during the third and final General Assembly, JCI delegates listened in as the 2016 JCI Board of Directors and International Appointees received their assignments and the future of the organization was discussed.

Below are our HK representatives who was appointed as 2016 JCI Officers!

1. 2016 JCI Growth and Development Committee Chairman - Senator Teresa Poon from JCI City Lady

2. 2016 JCI Sponsorship Committee Member (Asia and the Pacific) Senator Olive Chan from JCI Lion Rock

3. 2016 JCI Peace in the World Campaign Committee Member (Asia and the Pacific) - Naomi Chan from JCI Hong Kong Jayceettes

A survey was conducted by The National Community Concern Group (NCCG) on the topic “Be Better Index 2015”, with regards to how young people perceive the current status of their society and the world, and what future developments they expect in the coming 5 years.

A total of 492 surveys with majority of participants (i.e. over 50%) aged between 26 and 35 responded. The survey covered 10 different aspects including the economy, entrepreneurship & opportunity, international exposure & global citizenship, creativity & innovation development, health & environment, education & technology, governance, safety & security, personal freedom and social capital / mobility.

The aspects with highest scores were safety & security, health & environment and personal freedom, whereas the aspects with the lowest scores were entrepreneurship & opportunity, creativity & innovation development and governance. It was worth noting that the scores on creativity & innovation development dropped for two consecutive years. The results shows that respondents were more optimistic on the future development of entrepreneurship & opportunity and creativity & innovation development.

The above survey results were announced in a press conference on 12 September 2015 during The 50th National Conference at L’hotel Nina et Convention Centre.

At the result announcement during the National Convention, two Honourable Guests Speakers were invited to share their insights on the survey results, including The Hon Paul TSE Wai-chun, JP (current member of the Legislative Council), and Dr TIK Chi Yuen, SBS, JP (Chief Executive of Hong Kong Institute of Family Education).

We hope to have your continuous support to NCCG and join our good cause to become active citizens. Please LIKE our NCCG fans page at http://www.facebook.com/jcihknccg.
