LESSON TEEAre you missing those pesky 3’-4’ putts? Use this drill when warming up or practicing to increase your per-centages.

    Gate Putting Drill

    1. Find a straight putt.2. Lay your putter down in a straight line from the hole. This will get you to 3’.3. Get into your putting setup.4. Place a tee on each side of your putter.5. Practice making putts without hitting the tees. You MUST make 8 in a row!6. Take the tees away and make 10 in a row.

This drill is used by many Touring Professionals, including Tiger Woods. Do this drill and missing 3 footers will be a thing of the past!

    Dear Members-

As many of you have made your way back north, we have been keeping busy on and off the courts. We’ve been laying clay on all the courts to fluff them up before the heavy rainy season. There have been some small is-sues with the courts being a little damp in the afternoons, so we have put a daily monitoring sys-tem in place the last two weeks; So far it’s been very successful.

Last week we held our first Ten-nis Committee meeting with most of the new committee members and captains. We are happy to introduce Georganne Williams as our new ladies Cap-tain’s Council chairman. The committee gave the green light to host our various Round Robins throughout the summer.

For those of you still around, we are hosting our Memorial Day Round Robin so make sure to sign up early and enjoy some fun tennis followed by a poolside BBQ.

You may sign up for this event at www.gulfharbour.com or by call-ing the Tennis Shop at 444-3644.

All of us here wish you a great summer!

    Tennis News

Congratulations Sergio!Gulf Harbour’s Tennis Pro, Sergio Rebolledo, won second place in the finals of the Lely Professional Tennis Invitational. This Invitational is open to clubs from Fort Myers to Naples.

Sergio continued to advance over the many weeks of elimination and joined the final four on Thursday, April 25th.

Following three exciting sets in which Sergio won two, he narrowly missed the first place finish.

Congratulations to Sergio for representing Gulf Harbour in a profes-sional manner. The Members are proud of your accomplishment.

Spring Court ReportIt’s that time of year when Frank, Sergio, and I go from teaching team clinics to focusing on facilities projects. To keep the courts playing well and looking good, in just the last week, the three of us, with Fernando’s help, have administered and groomed 5 tons of course

Hard-Tru material on all 8 courts. This is just the begin-ning of our seasonal commitment to our facilities, and I thought it might

be educational to explain this process to those of you who wonder what it takes to keep our courts in great shape.

It’s important to remember that our courts are 16 years old, and WCI did not take very good care of them for many years. The irrigation pipes under the courts have aged accordingly, and sometimes we have to adjust the sys-tems manually to get the desired results. The typical life span of the Hydro Grid courts is about 20 years, and we hope by taking good care of them we’ll extend that time.

All of what follows may add up to more than you will ever want to know about court maintenance, but here is a list of things we have done in just the last 5 days:

  • 6

All Clay was dug out from drains. Every few months we borrow a small dump truck from golf course mainte-nance and dig out the clay from all of the drains surrounding the courts. This includes the sidewalk drain between courts 6 & 7, the catch basin drains be-hind courts 1, 5, 8 and all of the foot washer boxes. If this is not done on a semi-regular basis, the clay will fill the drains and cause the water to easily overflow and cause an unpleasant odor to occur.

The periphery of the courts were “cut” with the dirt devil before laying clay. Many members have asked us, “What is ‘cutting’?” “Cutting” is when we use a dirt devil to scarify the surface before laying clay so that it will bind better. If you don’t cut or scarify the surface be-fore laying clay you run the risk of los-ing most or all of the material with the first rain. Also, scarifying helps to keep surfaces from forming hardpan (algae that dies and calcifies creating a hard smooth surface which is not good for clay courts).

Once courts have been cut and clay is distributed with a spreader, we brush them several times and then “roll”. Rolling is very important to this pro-cess as it also helps the clay bind and keeps the lines flush with the surface. Some Members have asked us why we don’t roll more often. The reason we don’t need to roll as much as some fa-cilities is because we have sub surface irrigation. With sub surface irriga-tion the courts stay moist (or at least we want them too) all the time which keeps them very compact. Since above ground surface irrigation does not keep the courts constantly moist, those fa-cilities must roll more frequently due to the fact their courts’ surface is softer. Rarely do above ground facilities need to “cut” their courts since they are usu-ally less compact to start with. Most clubs that have added or built courts in the last 15 years have chosen to go with a sub surface watering system or “hydro courts” (like we have here at Gulf Har-bour) due to the overall maintenance

    advantage of that system.

Once the drains were cleaned, courts were cut, clay was added and rolling had been completed. All that was left was to brush several times, and they are ready for play.

There were reports of a small leak be-tween the canvas and the gutter on the awning that separates courts 6 & 7. I had Coastal Canvas come add clear caulk to that area, and hopefully the problem is fixed. Mr. Baldwin will keep me posted to its success during the next heavy rain.

As many of you may have noticed, (es-pecially the heavy hitters), the balls were getting very dirty after playing for just a short time. This has been a problem for longer than I had hoped, but we have taken some new approach-es to the watering cycles and over the last 3 weeks the courts have played very well without getting balls too wet. This new cycle will have to be altered periodically during the different sea-sons and doesn’t exempt early morn-ing dampness especially when it is very humid, foggy and overcast. Please rest assured that I have committed myself to making sure that this is a rare oc-currence rather than the norm. To that end, we have started our own daily in-ternal spreadsheet documenting each court’s condition at different times, we have even included a dew point chart to see the correlation between overly moist days and normal days.

Last but not least, some people have asked me what causes a dry spot? While overly moist courts are not fun to play on due to balls getting dirty and heavy too quickly, dry courts can actually be dangerous. Dry spots usu-ally form in strips due to the hydro grid system underneath the courts not get-ting enough water to completely fill the pipes and wick upwards to the surface. Sometimes dry spots will form in sea-son when it’s very dry and windy. It is easy to fix a dry spot by just manually

watering a certain cell but it can take a few hours before it’s completely moist.

I hate to admit it, but we have also expe-rienced some vandalism and tampering with the watering system from time to time which has in some cases contrib-uted to these dry spots. Our most fa-mous dry spot is on the north side of court 7 against the fence. While it’s usu-ally not in the player’s field of play we constantly battle to keep that cell moist. We have pulled some tiny roots out of that pipe in the past so this summer I plan on having our tennis maintenance company look and see if that pipe can be replaced.

That’s it for my spring court mainte-nance update, but as you use the courts, please keep me posted with your obser-vations, comments, or concerns.

    Have a great summer!

    Fitness News

Summer is Upon Us! Summer is upon us, which means many things, but an impor-tant focus is hydration! Staying hydrated allows your heart to pump blood more easily and your muscles to work more ef-ficiently.

Thirsty? Unfortunately, you are al-ready dehydrated by the time you develop a sensation to quench your thirst. PBS.org states “8oz/day” is out-dated and suggests to take your body weight and cut it in half to determine the amount of water you should drink per day. The best way to determine if you’re hydrated is to monitor your urine. Light or clear means your good to go; gold or darker colors – start drinking the H20!! Electrolytes can be lost with too much water consumption, so be cautious, my fellow fish!

Speaking of water – if you don’t have one or if you have one and don’t use it – pick up that reusable water bottle (or grab a

snazzy Gulf Harbour Tervis tumbler bottle) and make it your best friend this summer. Bring it with you everywhere! The plastic bottles of wa-ter we purchase can leach some nasty chemi-cals into the water (like BPA), especially when they get warm. Don’t like the taste of water? Pick up a flavoring packet, such as Crystal Light. No more excuses – stay hydrated!

  • Memorial Day Can Luminaries What you will need:Empty vegetable or soup cans (cleaned out and labels removed)Water, Nail, Hammer, Scrap paper, Ruler, TapeSpray paint in red, white, and blue

Directions:1) Begin the tin can luminaries by filling the cans up to the top with water, then place them in the freezer until the water is frozen solid. This will allow you to hammer a nail into the side of the can without the can denting.

    2) Next, punch designs into the sides of the can: USA, a star, or some fireworks. Cut out your templates, place on the can, and trace around them with a permanent marker (or draw freehand).

    3) Use a nail and hammer to punch out the design. Gently pound the nail in with a hammer. The nail will go through the can into the ice. Continue working around the pattern until the design is punched out.

    4) Allow the ice in the can to melt, and dry the can completely.

    5) Next, paint the cans or leave them plain silver. If painting, spray the bottom portion of the cans blue with the blue spray paint. Protect your work surface with newspapers and use good ventilation (preferably outdoors).

    6) When the cans are completely dry, cut a piece of scrap paper to wrap around the can. Make it 1/3 the height of the can. Wrap the paper around the bottom part of the can, cov-ering the blue painted area, and tape it closed.

    7) Now take the cans outside again and this time give them a good spray of the white spray paint, and allow the cans to dry well. When they are dry you can remove the paper strip.

    8) Next, make another paper strip 2/3 the height of the can. Secure around the blue and white portions of the can, leaving only the top portion exposed, and secure with tape. Take the cans outside again and this time spray the top section with the red spray paint, and al-low to dry. Remove the paper strip and you will see the pretty red, white, and blue stripes.

    9) When you are ready to use, add a little sand to weigh down the cans and add a tea light candle.
