    HARVEY COX, HOLLIS PROFESSOR OF DIVINITYEMERITUS, received his Mastersin Divinity from Yale and his Ph.D.

    in the History and Philosophy of

    Religion from Harvard. He taught

    at Harvard from 1965 to 2008 in

    both the Divinity School and the

    College, eventually being named

    Hollis professor, the oldest

    endowed chair at the university.

    His courses focused on the

    interaction of religion, politics, and

    culture. A prolific author, Cox’s

    most recent book is The Future

    of Faith (Harper-Collins, 2009).

    Professor Cox first fell in love

    with Italy on his honeymoon

    in 1957. He has since returned

    numerous times, lecturing

    at the Gregorian University

    and the University of Rome. He

    has also taught the history of

    Rome at a Princeton-sponsored

    summer institute and toured

    several Italian cities to lecture

    under the sponsorship of the

    Italian Ecumenical Center.

    ROMEArrive this morning in the Eternal City and transfer to the elegant Grand Hotel de la Minerve, overlooking the Pantheon. Following lunch at the hotel, stretch your legs on a walk to the nearby Piazza Navona. The balance of the afternoon is at leisure. This evening attend a welcome reception and dinner at an elegant rooftop restaurant.

    SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27

    ROME Today’s walking tour begins with a visit to the Pantheon, a marvel of Roman engineering. Then visit the nearby Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome’s only Gothic church, with frescoes by Filippino Lippi, Michelangelo’s Risen Christ, and sculptures by Bernini. Continue to the Ara Pacis Museum, designed by architect Richard Meier, housing one of the most important structures of Augustan Rome. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. Dinner is at Palazzo Sacchetti, in a room adorned with Salviati’sfrescoes of the 1550s, a master-piece of Mannerism.

    MONDAY, OCTOBER 28

    ROME Today begins at Santa Costanza, whose mosaics illustrate the transition from pagan to Chris-tian Rome. Then continue to adjacent Sant’Agnese fuori le Mura, said to house the bones of St. Agnes. Following lunch, see the Church of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill and the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli, with Michelangelo’s powerful statue of Moses. In the early evening, a visit is planned to the Palazzo Colonna. The private apartments feature enchanting views of Italy by Vanvitelli and frescoes by Pinturicchio.Dinner is at a delightful trattoria.

    TUESDAY, OCTOBER 29

    ROMEEnjoy a day in the Roman countryside, stopping first at the Abbey of Grottaferrata tosee the frescoes, painted in 1610by Domenichino for Cardinal Farnese. Continue for a specially arranged visit to Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia, where Visconti’s The Leopard was filmed in the exquisite 17th- century rooms. Drive to Frascati for lunch and a wine tasting in a charming villa restaurant. Return to Rome, arriving in time for afternoon tea. Dinner and the evening are at leisure.

    WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30

    ROMEThis morning, continue with private visits to princely collections. Begin at Casino dell’Aurora to see Guido Reni’s fresco in the garden of thePalazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi, next to the Palazzo del Quirinale.     ROME Today’s walking tour begins with a visit to the Pantheon, a marvel of Roman engineering. Then visit the nearby Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome’s only Gothic church, with frescoes by Filippino Lippi, Michelangelo’s Risen Christ, and sculptures by Bernini. Continue to the Ara Pacis Museum, designed by architect Richard Meier, housing one of the most important structures of Augustan Rome. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. Dinner is at Palazzo Sacchetti, in a room adorned with Salviati’sfrescoes of the 1550s, a master-piece of Mannerism.

    MONDAY, OCTOBER 28

    ROME Today begins at Santa Costanza, whose mosaics illustrate the transition from pagan to Chris-tian Rome. Then continue to adjacent Sant’Agnese fuori le Mura, said to house the bones of St. Agnes. Following lunch, see the Church of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill and the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli, with Michelangelo’s powerful statue of Moses. In the early evening, a visit is planned to the Palazzo Colonna. The private apartments feature enchanting views of Italy by Vanvitelli and frescoes by Pinturicchio.Dinner is at a delightful trattoria.

    ROME Today’s walking tour begins with a visit to the Pantheon, a marvel of Roman engineering. Then visit the nearby Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Rome’s only Gothic church, with frescoes by Filippino Lippi, Michelangelo’s Risen Christ, and sculptures by Bernini. Continue to the Ara Pacis Museum, designed by architect Richard Meier, housing one of the most important structures of Augustan Rome. Lunch and the afternoon are at leisure. Dinner is at Palazzo Sacchetti, in a room adorned with Salviati’sfrescoes of the 1550s, a master-piece of Mannerism.

    MONDAY, OCTOBER 28

    ROME Today begins at Santa Costanza, whose mosaics illustrate the transition from pagan to Chris-tian Rome. Then continue to adjacent Sant’Agnese fuori le Mura, said to house the bones of St. Agnes. Following lunch, see the Church of Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill and the Church of San Pietro in Vincoli, with Michelangelo’s powerful statue of Moses. In the early evening, a visit is planned to the Palazzo Colonna.     HARVEY COX, HOLLIS PROFESSOR OF DIVINITYEMERITUS, received his Mastersin Divinity from Yale and his Ph.D.

    in the History and Philosophy of

    Religion from Harvard. He taught

    at Harvard from 1965 to 2008 in

    both the Divinity School and the

    College, eventually being named

    Hollis professor, the oldest

    endowed chair at the university.

    His courses focused on the

    interaction of religion, politics, and

    culture. A prolific author, Cox’s

    most recent book is The Future

    of Faith (Harper-Collins, 2009).

    Professor Cox first fell in love

    with Italy on his honeymoon

    in 1957. He has since returned

    numerous times, lecturing

    at the Gregorian University

    and the University of Rome. He

    has also taught the history of

    Rome at a Princeton-sponsored

    summer institute and toured

    several Italian cities to lecture

    under the sponsorship of the

    Italian Ecumenical Center.
