    HAQEEQAT AND MAARIFAT

REAL REALITY (As Opposed to Apparent Reality) AND GNOI!

Translation from Hazrat Pir Hakim Syed Aminuddin Ahmad Shah (RA)

The Knowledge disseminated by Islam is of two broad ategories! "#oteri and

"soteri$ "#oteri knowledge onsists of the knowledge of the Shariat or %odified &aw

whereas the "soteri Knowledge is that of Taree'at or the Path ay$ Purifiation of the

e#ternal body is not *ossible without knowledge of Shariat whereas it is im*ossible to

attain to s*iritual ad+anement without knowledge of Taree'at$ In the le#ion of the

Sufi,s! knowledge Shariat is termed as The Knowledge of %ertainty (Ilm-ul-.akeen)

while Knowledge of Taree'at is termed as The "ssene or /isible Proof of %ertitude

(Ain-ul-.akeen)0 1oth these branhes of knowledge are om*limentary and de*endant

u*on eah other! without knowledge relating to Shariat there is no *ossibility of attaining

    knowledge of The Path (Taree'at)0

Howe+er! the bounds of Shariat and the Rules of Taree'at are transended by

another highway of knowledge and this is termed as The "ssene of %ertitude (Ha'-ul-

.akeen) the serets and mystery of whih is ahie+ed through The 2ery of Allah

(SubhanaHoo a Ta,ala)$ This knowledge is termed as Real Reality (Ha'e'at) or 3nosis(2a,arifat)$

Awareness of the definitions and meanings of the 44 5ames of Allah (ST) is the

beginning of 2a,arifat whereas knowledge relating to the mysteries of these 5ames is

Ha'e'at$ .et again knowledge of the s*eial affets of these 6i+ine names is termed as

Ilm-e-&adunni or Transendental Knowledge$ This s*eial knowledge is bestowed u*on

the true de+otees of Allah (ST) through their sinerity and +aulting s*iritual

as*irations$ Allah (ST) has desribed this as 7a Tainaoo 2illladunna Ilma08

Real Reality as o**osed to a**arent reality is a om*letely different field and its

S*iritual States and e+ents transend the bounds of Shariat and the tenants of Taree'at$

This is re+ealed in the Holy 9uran aording to Surah 9haf whih deals with the meeting

between the Holy Pro*het 2oses (AS) and Hazrat Khizr (Alai hiss Salaam)$ This Surah

    ontains some +ery *ertinent re+elations and fats$

    The Holy Pro*het 2oses (AS) was a +ery noble and e#alted Pro*het of Allah

(ST) and the Holy Torah was re+ealed unto him regarding whih Allah (ST) has

delared it to be 3uidane and &ight$ The Holy Torah originally ontained all 3uidane

regarding daily life and the attainment of religiosity$ Then what was the knowledge the

attainment of whih suh a towering *ersonality and *ossessor of 6i+ine 3uidane was

fored to undertake an arduous :ourney and e#laim to his young attendant that until I

    reah the %onfluene of Ri+ers (2u:ammah Al 1ahrain) I will not ease tra+eling e+en if

    it takes me many years;

The Tafseer of Ibn-e-9aseer states that Hazrat Abbas (Radhi Allah

He is the +ery Saint regarding whom the Holy 9uran states 7He (the Saint) is one

who has been 3raed by Allah (ST) and has been *ro+ided with knowledge from Him0

hat does this knowledge ontain that is not to be found in suh a Holy 1ook as the

Torah and whih was denied to suh an esteemed Pro*het as the Holy 2oses (AS); hat

is this knowledge regarding whih The Holy Pro*het 2oses (AS) said unto Hazrat Khizr

AS) 7If you would im*art some learning to me from that knowledge whih has been

granted to you and that *ro+idene that has been bestowed unto you from Allah (ST) I

    will gladly undertake to remain in your ser+ie;

The Tafseer of Ibn-e-9aseer states that Hazrat Khizr (AS) re*lied 7.ou hold the

Holy Torah in your hand and reei+e 6i+ine Re+elations are these not suffiient for you;8

75either the knowledge that has been bestowed u*on me is of use to you nor am I worthy

of the knowledge that you *ossess$8

    The Holy Pro*het 2oses (AS) said with great res*et 7If I ha+e your *ermission I

would like to abide with you and ser+e you in order to attain that knowledge that would

    benefit me0

Hazrat Khizr (AS) re*lied that you (the Holy Pro*het 2oses (AS) will not be able

to abide with me as my tasks will onflit with your +iews$ I am tasked with some duties

that are entirely remo+ed from your understanding$ It is im*ossible that you would be

able to tolerate that whih runs ontrary to your disernment nor will you be able to

forebear my ations as you are bereft of the States that I *ossess as you do not hold the

esoteri wisdom as Allah (ST) Himself 3uides me in His &imitless and Infinite

    isdom (Tafseer Ibn-e-9aseer)$

Khizr (AS) made a hole and sank it$ Seeing suh a destruti+e at without any a**arent

ause the Holy Pro*het 2oses (AS) strongly ob:eted u*on whih Hazrat Khizr (AS) said

that he had already foretold that the Pro*het of Allah (ST) would not be able to

    forebear$

The Holy Pro*het 2oses (AS) asked Hazrat Khizr,s (AS) *ardon and *romised to

    hold his *eae$

means of sustenane$ hereas by sinking it was hidden from the un:ust and ould be

reo+ered by the hildren and re*aired at little e#*ense$

If you ask about the boy whom I killed! know >h 2oses (AS) that he was the

unruly and disobedient offs*ring of +enerable and true belie+ers! it was feared that he

would grow u* as a denier of :ustie and would be ruel to his *arents$ Therefore I killed

him in order that Allah (ST) may *ro+ide them with a good and belie+ing hild so that

he would be of ser+ie to his *arents in their old age0

The wall that I re*aired belonged to two or*han boys who were underage and

unable to fend for themsel+es$ Their father! who had been a good man! had hidden a

treasure under this wall$ Allah (ST) desired that when these hildren reahed adulthood

they would uno+er the treasure themsel+es whereas if it had been uno+ered afore time

the inhabitants of the +illage would ha+e usur*ed their rights0 This was 3rae from Allah

(ST) and whate+er I ha+e done has not been undertaken from my own +olition0

This is the reality behind my ats regarding whih you ould not show *atiene or

disern the wisdom that lay hidden behind these seemingly irrational ats$ These ats

ha+e been desribed by Allama I'bal as follows?

The boat of the meek= blessed life and the wall of the or*hans

"+en the wisdom of 2oses fails to disern0

The Tafseer of Ibn-e-9aseer states that the Holy Pro*het 2ohammad (Swalalah

    Ta,ala A Alaihe A A,alayhe A Swallam) said that if the Holy Pro*het 2oses (AS)

had dis*layed some *atiene and had forborne from making ob:etions! Allah (ST)

    would ha+e re+ealed e+en more regarding this 6i+ine isdom0

The related story brings to light the lesson that there is yet another ay a*art from

that whih is re+ealed in the Holy 1ooks and the *ratie of the Holy Pro*hets (
