Definition

Haptic is the “science of applyingtactile sensation to human interactionwith computers”

Why its called Haptic

The word haptic, derived from the Greek wordhaptikos which means contact or to touch.

Touch can result in many physiological reaction.

Of the five senses, touch is the most proficient andthe only one capable of simultaneous input and output.

Generation of haptic

First generation - use of electromagnetic technologies whichproduce a limited range of sensation.

Second generation –touch coordinate specific response allowingthe haptic effect to be localized to the position on a screen ortouch pannel, rather than the whole device.

Third generation – delivers both touch-coordinate specificresponses and customizable haptic effect.

Fourth generation - pressure sensitivity,ie.how hard you presson a flat surface can effect the response.

TECHNOLOGY

Haptic interaction can be categorized in to the different types oftouch sensation a user can receives

Tactile feedback

Force feedback

Tactile feedback

Refers to the sensation felt by the skin.

It allows the user to feel the thing such as the texture of surfaces, temperature and vibration.

Force feedback

It reproduces the directional forces that can result from solidboundaries.

Eg, the weight of virtual objects, etc.

Basic block diagram

How it works

Types of haptic device

Virtual reality / Telerobotics based device

Exoskeleton and stationary devices.

Gloves and wearable devices.

Point-sources and Specific task devices.

Locomotion Interfaces.

Feedback devices Force feedback devices . Tactile displays.

Exoskeleton and stationary

device

Large and immobile system that the user must attach him orherself too..

Their large size and immobile nature allow for the generation oflarge and varied force information.

Gloves and wearable device

The user can move naturally without being weighted down by alarge exoskeleton or immobile device

Point- sources and specific task

devices

Single point of contact.

Specialized for performing a particular task.

Restrict the device to perform few functions.

phantom

Provides a 3D touch to the virtual object.

Six degree of freedom positional sensing.

When the user moves his finger, then he could really feel theshape and size of the virtual 3D object that has been already.programmed.

Locomotion interface

An interesting application of haptic feedback is in the form of fullbody Force Feedback called locomotion interfaces.

Locomotion interfaces are movement of force restriction devicesin a confined space.

These interfaces overcomes the limitations of using joysticks formaneuvering or whole body motion platforms, in which the user isseated and does not expend energy, and of room environments, where only short distances can be traversed.

Application

Surgery. Military application. Mobiles. Games. Robot control.

Advantages

Working time is reduced.

Communication is centered through touch and the digitalworld can behave like the virtual world.

Increase confidence in medical field.

with haptic hardware and software designer can feel theresult as if he/she were handling physical object.

Entertainment.

Haptic interface allows the user to feel as well as to see virtualobjects on a computer , and so we can give an illusion of touchingsurface.

Future application

Medical application – use of central workstation from whichsurgeon would perform operation in various location ;with machinesetup and patient preparation performed by local nursing staff.

Textiles industry - user could study and feel the texture andquality of material during the sale of cloth through internet.

Holographic interaction - the feedback allows the user tointeract with a hologram and receive tactile response as if theholographic object were real.

Disadvantages

Higher cost.

Large weight and size.

The precision of touch require a lots of advance design.

conclusion

Touch place a huge role in the way we perceive oursurroundings and also how we interact with them.

Haptic technologies have come a long way in bringing thistechnology in to reality.

currently it is limited to consumers.

Cont...

Future generation of mobile devices and game console accessories will implement more haptic feedback.

Increasing application of hapatics the cost of the devices will drop in future .

This technology brings us one step closer to virtual world.
