Library News Spring is upon us and it’s the time of year for new beginnings…

Here in the Library, I’ve been focusing on new books, both ordering, cataloguing and preparing them for our shelves. We’ve been building our collection with some fun new series that are a great addition to the transitioning chapter book area, such as Heidi Heckelbeck and Captain Awesome. For older readers, we have Katherine Lasky’s Wolves of the Beyond, and a lovely new series from Britain entitled, My Funny Family. We also have a new colourful Canadian provinces and territories series, plus a community series that includes important places in our neighbourhood. I’ve also purchased a pair of books that discuss children earning and spending money…an important part of preparing our students for the world ahead. And in the picture book department, I can’t keep up with the demand for Mo Willem’s books. I’ve added about a dozen new titles, with Elephant and Piggie being the most popular! I love the enthusiasm these new books generate in our students!

Students will be allowed to bring Library books home over spring break if they choose. Please watch for them and share some all-important reading time with your family.

Mr. Chody’s Chatter We all thought spring was coming, but alas, winter won’t release its grip on us with yet more snow. Saying that, we have had a fabulous month of Bucket Fillers. I had the privilege of handing out awards at the last assembly to some extremely deserving individuals. Awards were given to students for being thoughtful, positive and helpful. Take Tanner S. who encourages our young Kindergarten students by giving them positive comments, smiles and thumbs up. Or, Petra who sees that a peer has accidentally dumped a bin belonging to another teacher in the hall-way, and helps in cleaning it up. It can be as simple as Solomon who takes the time to tie his peers’ cross country ski boots, carry their gear for them and lend his own materials to his classmates. These may seem like simple tasks but they show students thinking of others. Great job to everyone who is taking time to fill others’ buckets.

WOW

This year our fundraiser is a Math-a-Thon. It will be very similar to our Spell-a-Thon that was held two years ago. Students can collect pledges per question or collect a flat rate. Packages will be go-ing home on Monday, March 24. That will give stu-dents a chance to collect pledges over Spring Break. The date of the Math-a-Thon will be Tues-day, April 15, 2014. We thank everyone for their support during our fund raising efforts. We use those funds for gym, library and technology equip-ment, as well as WOW awards and special events.

EUBP NEWS Our EUBP students will be celebrating Easter in the month of April. They will decorate Pysanka (Easter Eggs)and bake Paska (Easter Bread) for their Easter Baskets. On April 25th students will walk down to have the baskets blessed by Father Chorney and enjoy a wonderful lunch at the East Selkirk Hall. During the week of April 21, 2014, EUBP students will be creating a mural of Taras Schevchenko with visit-ing artist Annie Bergen. This unique mural will displayed at the school and various Ukrainian events like Folk-lorama. MPUE has been contracting guest artists annually to especially work with our Ukrainian Students. Looking back at the last few months we have forgotten to thank our students, teachers, volunteers and parents who made the Christmas Tea/Concert such a hit way back in December. The Ukrainian caroling went very well. Students visited various places around Selkirk meeting up at the Sel-kirk Mall for a spectacular Ukrainian Christmas Carol performance. Petrusia Perogy has been busy making her rounds entertaining all the children at R.F. Morrison and Hand in Hand Daycare. She is such a popular perogy!

Dear Petrusia,

Kindergarten Registration for 2014-2015 We are now accepting kindergarten registrations for both our English and English-Ukrainian Bilingual programs for children born in 2009. The English-Ukrainian program is available to all children in the Lord Selkirk School Division. We are asking our parents to register as soon as possible because we provide readiness packages for children prior to their entering kindergarten. This material will help your child be better prepared for school.

For additional information, please contact the school at 482-4521.

UDL - Component Two of SEL: Valuing Diversity Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the idea that teaching the child is just as important as teaching the child his/her academics. The goal of Universal Design for Learning in LSSD is to develop caring classroom com-munities through Social Emotional Learning.

Students in Lord Selkirk School Division are being guided by their teachers to realize their “smarts” through the multiple intelligence survey and programming changes that support the variety of ways students can learn.

Students also have been building relationships with other students through three minute morning chat activi-ties. Teachers are focusing on building relationships within their classrooms through the promotion of ac-ceptance and appreciation in the differences all of us bring to the classroom.

Within the community of their classrooms, teachers and students are creating “classroom brains”.

Teachers are working through lessons that highlight individuals’ “smarts”.

Students are having discussions in their classrooms about all of the different careers that would thrive with their current smart.

Teachers are recognizing the challenges that students need to work on to help them be a well-rounded in-dividual. This is being done through goal setting and continued follow up discussions around each stu-dent’s area of weakness.

There are students in our school division that have exceptionalities. Teachers are leading discussions and activities to establish empathy for others.

Through specific Respecting Diversity Lessons, and through ongoing discussions around all of these ideas, students and teachers are establishing a safe and caring environment where all students are accepted for who they are. If all people find value in each smart, they will learn to appreciate the strengths that others bring to their lives.

“Appreciation is a wonderful thing. It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.”

-Voltaire

Skating The Grade 4 noon hour skating sessions were very successful. Many students enjoyed the fun and fitness during the last few months. Their confidence on skates and skill levels improved sig-nificantly. A big thank you goes out to all the parents, grandpar-ents, Ms. Sprange, Ms. Kalyta, Mrs. Kwiatkowski, Mr. Chody and Mrs. Lovenjak who volunteered their precious time and came out to the arena to help out the skaters. We would also like to thank Mr. Genyk and Mr. Mueller for unlocking and locking the doors! Finally we wish to thank the East Sellkirk Recreation Association for their support and partnership in our skating efforts.

February’s Athletes of the Month Every month, an athlete from each class is recognized in our assembly. Students chosen demonstrate good sportsmanship, consistently appropriate behaviour and strong effort and excellent participation.

Cross Country Skiing Club In February and March we decided to put all the snow on the playground to good use and started and gr. 3 cross country skiing club. Thirty-two students signed up and in the spirit of the Olympics we made 3 teams: Canada, Ukraine and the United States. We had to cancel several times due to indoor recess but each team managed to go skiing 3 times. Judging by the smiles on the students faces and the eagerness they showed each time it was their turn to ski I’d say it was a big success! Way to go gr.3’s!!!
